episode number 483 five minute friday be a lamplighter so today i met an interesting
guy named mayor and mayor creates videos on social media where he does random acts of kindness
skits and positive inspiration to spread love to the world through these videos.
And I asked Mayor what his vision was, what his message was, why he's doing all the things he's
doing. And he said he wants to be a lamplighter. He heard about a story in the past about a
lamplighter who goes around town and creates light for all those who can't see.
And he said he wants to do that for the world.
He wants to do that for each person that sees his videos
or he becomes a part of his message who he connects with in person.
He wants to be a lamplighter for the world.
And I thought that was a great analogy.
How do we become a lamplighter?
You know, Thomas Monson said,
if you want to give the light to others,
you have to glow yourself.
So we can't actually inspire and create light in others
unless we are doing things we're inspired by
and we're loving and we're in path towards our vision
and mission and purpose ourselves.
So how do we find our own light?
Well, it sounds complicated sometimes when you're unsure
or when you're in a dark place in your life
or when you're going through suffering or breakup or heartache
or financially struggling.
You lose your job.
You get fired.
You know, you're in transition.
Sometimes it's hard when there's so much darkness and weight we're carrying to actually glow ourselves and to actually be inspired ourselves. So how do we find
our own light? In the biggest darkness, how do we turn on the light inside of us? We got to focus
on the things that bring us joy,
the things that make us smile.
We have to utilize the gifts and talents we have
in the moment we have in our lives.
If we're not using the things that we're good at,
if we're not using the gifts we were born with
or that we have cultivated over time
to make an impact or to create art
or to create magic in some way in the world or to
create connection, love, inspiration, results in some area, then we are going to always be in a
dark place if we're not creating and using our gifts. It's so important that we wake up
intentionally and say, hello world, I'm so blessed and grateful
and thankful to live another day.
And today is the day I'm going to use all these different gifts.
I'm going to do things that bring me joy.
Even if it's just 20 minutes a day, I'm going to go on that hike.
I'm going to take my dog for a walk.
I'm going to go for a swim.
I'm going to go work out.
I'm going to call friends that I haven't talked to in a while. I'm going to go my dog for a walk. I'm going to go for a swim. I'm going to go work out. I'm going to call friends that I haven't talked to in a while.
I'm going to go treat myself to something.
I'm going to go make an impact in people's lives in my community.
I'm going to do something that brings me joy.
That's what we need to do.
Every single day you wake up, you need to say, how can I maximize the gifts that I have inside of me right now to create something better
in the world?
How can I leave an impact?
How can I make something better than when it was before I arrived?
That's what it means to be a lamplighter, is to turn on the light inside of your own
heart and let it shine so brightly so that when you walk down the street, you have the biggest smile on your face and people think you're crazy because you are so lit
up with joy and happiness and fulfillment.
It's about being on the journey.
The journey and using your gifts and talents on the path are what bring you the most joy.
The growth and the learning is what brings you joy.
If we just focus on the things we know,
but we're not constantly learning and growing
and developing new skills and talents,
then that light is going to constantly
be the same brightness, or it might even dim down.
When we learn and grow, we develop more confidence,
we develop more joy, we develop more understanding,
we develop more awareness in the world and our light continues to shine brighter and brighter.
When we become less judgmental, when we become less negative, when we gossip less and we talk
about positive things, we talk about positive ideas, we talk about hope and change and intimacy and relationship and family
and community and art and music and dance. That's when we create more light in ourselves. And that
light radiates to the people around us. How do we find our light? Do the things that bring you joy,
make you smile, and utilize your gifts and talents.
Katrina Mayer said, let your light shine so brightly that others can see their way out of the dark.
