This is 5-Minute Friday!
I love this quote from Leon Brown who says,
Every day you must unlearn the ways that hold you back.
You must rid yourself of negativity so that you can learn to fly.
And oftentimes what we most need in life isn't something new.
We don't need to learn new
things a lot of the time, but we need to eliminate what's holding us back because of these bad
habits, these bad things that we do continue to keep us stuck as opposed to moving us forward.
And I just had Matthew McConaughey on the podcast, incredible interview and episode,
and we were just talking about this together. And I asked Matthew for five things to eliminate for a happier life.
And here's what he had to say.
The first thing Matthew said was bad people.
Get rid of bad people.
Eliminate people that don't promote your growth and bring you joy.
We often cling onto these toxic people because they validated us in the short term, but they're harmful in the long term.
And I am guilty for this.
I've been in relationships for too long that I knew that were holding me back. I've been in business partnerships for too long. I've been
in friendships for too long that were holding me back. You just got to eliminate the bad people.
And I'm not saying you got to cut everyone out of your life forever, but distance yourself from
certain people if they're holding you back. Number two is the bad places. Again, stop going to places
that encourage unhealthy lifestyle behaviors, whether that's bars, fast food restaurants, or just environments with people that don't support you.
And if a certain place continually makes you feel bad, do what you can to eliminate it.
Our environment dictates our mood.
It's hard to be positive in a negative environment.
You can do it.
It's hard to sustain that over time.
Create the environment of positivity,
of growth, and find those good places to spend your time in. Number three, comparison to others.
Stop comparing yourself to other people. This is one of the things that will rob you of your joy.
Eliminate jealousy. This is so hard for us to do. We are wired for greed. We are wired for
jealousy. It's just part of kind of the
human behavior, I guess. But the faster you eliminate comparison to others, the more you
realize the abundance there is for all of us and seeing other people succeed and celebrating them
as well, the faster you'll be on a path to happiness and self-growth. Number four is
overthinking failures. Instead of constantly dissecting your failures
and your problems, start dissecting your own success.
Ask yourself, how can I replicate this success I just had?
Or something I did when I was younger,
how can I do that again?
Rather than how can I stop my failures,
start focusing on how can I replicate my successes.
And number five, something to eliminate from your life
is instant gratification.
If you can fight the cravings
for instant pleasure and results,
your life will start to have much more benefits.
Be okay with delayed gratification.
As an athlete, this is all we live with.
Practice, practice, practice, wait for the game.
There are many different psychological
tests that practice this on children and adults, and the ones who have more delayed gratification
become more successful over time. Again, focus on eliminating instant gratification and do the work
now so your future self can reap the rewards. It's something I love hearing Matthew McConaughey talk
about in our episode. He had a famous speech where he said his hero is 10 years away from him right now.
And in our interview with him the previous episode, I asked him what would his hero 10 years
away from now be proud of Matthew today? What would he be saying to him today about what he's
most proud of? And his response will blow you away. So make sure you check that out and listen to the
full episode because he's truly an inspirational human and he's done some incredible things and I
think you're going to love it. Again, your first step in eliminating these sources of negativity
is to take a look in the mirror. Figure out which of these five things apply to you. Which one are
you doing that you need to let go of ASAP? And make sure you're
being honest with yourself. And as Bryant McGill puts it, real transformation requires real honesty.
If you want to move forward, get real with yourself. And as always, if no one has told
you lately, you are loved, you are worthy, and you matter. You know what time it is.
It's time to go out there and do something great.
