This is 5-Minute Friday!
Hey y'all, it's Brendan.
You know how people always say that there's power in your peer group?
I actually think that's only half the story.
You know, people always say,
hey, make sure you surround yourself with positive, successful, incredible people. I'm like, yes, I agree. But let's not confuse just having a good,
positive, successful peer group as the same as having the type of people around you who actually
are enabled and capable of lifting you higher. You know, I think about my career when I started writing books. Most of you
guys know me from my last book, High Performance Habits, how extraordinary people became that way.
When I was starting my career as a writer, this is like, you know, 18 years ago, I had no idea
what I was doing, but I had a few friends who were successful and, you know, like impressive authors and they did nothing
to really help me. It's like, isn't it true? You know, some wealthy people, but those wealthy
people ain't helping you. Isn't it true? You know, some successful people in your field,
but they're not lending a hand. So yeah, you have the peer group, you know, these people,
they're somewhere in your circle, but they're not necessarily actually assisting you in your growth in a strategic or consistent way. That's why I
said, yes, power of peer group, surround yourself with positive people, build your ideal community.
All of that is the informal stuff that allows you to have a happy, successful, positive life.
that allows you to have a happy, successful, positive life.
But you need to formalize a structure in which the people around you are lifting you up.
You need to formalize a structure
in which people around you feel
like it's part of the process to open new doors for you,
to enable you with new strategies,
to be understanding, to make recommendations
and advice that you know
works in your field. And that formal structure is what's called a mastermind. That's what most
people don't get. I didn't get this. I come from a really small town in Montana where I didn't have
an amazing positive peer group when I grew up. I had a lot of turmoil and chaos and abuse and challenges where I grew up.
I didn't have, at the beginning of my career,
a ton of people who were saying,
Hey, Brendan, here's how to do this, and then do that, and then do this.
I kind of had to go because of where I was from
and my lack of understanding or commitment.
I had to save money.
And I'm not kidding. I had
to buy my way into growth. And what I mean by that is I had to like buy other people's courses
or buy books or, you know, attend seminars and ultimately attend a mastermind that opened the
doors for me in a big ways. And I know that might sound really horrible to say, but listen, this is the school of greatness. We can be honest that sometimes you've got to invest
in your future, that sometimes the big gates open after your big commitments, that sometimes
it's the people you get around who also are in your similar space, who can give you that next
blueprint to go to the next level.
And that's what happened for me. I didn't have connections. I didn't know people. I didn't have a great positive network. So I started investing in going to seminars to meet people like that.
I invested in courses and I bought books. And that's why today I sell those things. It's why
I create those things. It's why that's part of my purpose in my art is because I was that dumb kid.
I needed that stuff, you know?
And if I didn't have that, I don't know where I would be today. And one of the greatest differences
that has ever been made in my life was by joining masterminds because it's a formal structure in
which everybody in that group is responsible and has raised their hand to say, we're going to help
each other. And if you've never been part of a mastermind, it's basically three things that the group is kind of in charge of with you to build.
And that is first, it's to facilitate the sharing of strategies that work. So if you're in a career
or an industry and you don't know exactly what to do to go to six figures, seven figures,
eight figures and beyond, you're not in the right mastermind. The right mastermind is a group of
people who will share the strategies that work. They're not trying to right mastermind. The right mastermind is a group of people who will share
the strategies that work. They're not trying to hold it back or be secret about it. They're like,
oh, you're doing this? Hey, I did this. Try that. Or you'll brainstorm together to find the right
strategies. And the second thing that group is in charge of is relationships. Meaning, oh, you're
trying to deal with this? I know a guy over here. I know a gal over there. Hey, have you interviewed
with that person? Let me connect you. Like the sharing of more relationships, even outside the mastermind,
but happening from a base of trust of being in the mastermind has really served me in my career.
And then the last piece is more of the mental, emotional, spiritual journey that is just simply
understanding that you got people who understand your world, who get it,
who are empathetic, compassionate, kind, open, caring, present, consistent, who are there for
you when you don't know what to do, when you are struggling. Those are the three benefits I've
gotten from masterminds. So if you ever have that opportunity of joining a mastermind in your field,
So if you ever have that opportunity of joining a mastermind in your field, please, my friend, do it. If you ever have an opportunity to structure the ability for you to win, do that in every way you can. Structure your habits, structure your mindset, structure your behavior, structure your relationships, but also structure a group that will help carry you to the next mountaintop. You deserve to have abundance in your life. You deserve to have a breakthrough in your life. You deserve to have a group of people around you who cheer you on and support you in those dark and those challenging times, who open those doors, who are as responsible
for your success as you are. And that's the power of a mastermind. So get involved in one as soon
as you can in your life, my friends, because the future holds good things for you. You are stronger
than you think, and there are more people out there willing to help you than you could ever imagine. I hope you enjoyed this special Five Minute Friday
