Starting point is 00:01:09 How was the athlete dinner? I don't see Dave's recording light. And he's gone. We lost him. Does he have to re-click his link? Yeah. I'll tell him right now. Okay. that didn't work so hot link again can you hear me now you just hit the link again yeah we can hear you great you just hit every if
Starting point is 00:01:37 you get disconnected just hit the link again we understand you're a busy man and we will tolerate this uh the driving day where are you? I'm at the campground. I just saw Rory and Rich, their RV. I didn't see Rory, though. I was really looking forward to seeing him. And I'm looking forward to seeing Rich. And is your day done? Oh, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:01:57 I'm going back to the Coliseum right now. I got a little event with the sport team. It's 7.41 p.m. What's the weather like in Madison? It's really nice. What's the temperature say? 88 degrees, but it's a nice 88. Nice.
Starting point is 00:02:14 And is there any rain expected this year? Yeah, maybe thunderstorms tomorrow, I heard. I didn't hear you. Any rain? Oh, that is nice. Look at that. Look at that truck. Ford Motor Truck of the Year.
Starting point is 00:02:28 How many campers you got there? Jeez, a lot. Hold on. Let's take a look. There's just fucking campers everywhere. Hold on. Let's see. Hundreds?
Starting point is 00:02:40 Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, there's a lot of people here. It's hard to see scope there, but a lot of tents over there. Dave, are you guys expecting rain this year? I know that one year it dropped. It was like near freezing for a couple hours. Didn't you just ask me that question? Yes.
Starting point is 00:02:57 Yes, we are. Tomorrow. Rain tomorrow? Maybe. They're saying maybe thunderstorms. I'm hearing all kinds of reports. I don't care. We just roll. We just do what we need to do and we flex as needed.
Starting point is 00:03:12 Can you drive closer to a cell tower? Let me try to get to it. Am I cutting? Are you hearing a... You're good. I think your seatbelt needs to be put on. I've sold them that four times. Okay, hold on. I'm going to stop in a second. I saw your announcements today. From what I could tell, you introduced a kayak and some flippers. Did I miss anything?
Starting point is 00:03:40 No, that's it. Yeah. Yeah. What'd you think of the kayak? What'd you think of the kayak what do you think of the kayak i mean i i'm i'm impressed i'm i'm uh i'd like to hear your take on it how you chose it what the thought process was to use a kayak um how that fits sort of into the whole crossfit games um programming thinking part of the unknown and unknowable and and something we've never done with the athletes. Fundamentally, pretty low skill, meaning anyone can pick it up and anyone can sit on a kayak and just paddle. They're going to get practice with it tomorrow. And it's not like a stand-up paddleboard
Starting point is 00:04:26 that requires a lot of balance uh these kayaks are very user-friendly so um made sense to add to the event pretty cool map i can't see anything do they do the um do they do the swimming first or the kite because you're wearing sunglasses inside. Do they do the swimming first or the kayak first? It's swim one mile, and then it's kayak three miles. Have you used the kayaks yourself? And how did you do in it? Yes. I didn't do three miles.
Starting point is 00:05:04 Well, how did you do in it? Did you get tired? It's going to be challenging. Look, here's the thing. Anything physical that you do at intensity or at race pace or where there's an outcome that has points involved or you have to go all out, that's significant. And that's going to be challenging. Anytime you're racing or going at max effort, that makes physical activities that much more difficult. So if you paddle slow enough, it's easy. Paddle in a race environment is challenging.
Starting point is 00:05:36 And you said they're going to get to sit in the kayaks before the event. Is that the day before? And how long will they get in the in kayaks and will they get any coaching they'll get a little bit of time and they'll uh not nothing too formal not too but i imagine they'll be oh right um dave do you the programming um for the first day uh for the um i don't know what you call it the age the age people the non-individual people the people over 35 and 14 that starts tomorrow have you actually
Starting point is 00:06:19 yourself ever gone through the entire day for like the 65 plus class? No. And you know, like I don't, um, drive the truck back down. I don't, uh, no. And so like our team program programs, those, and then I look at them, give input, give direction, give guidance, sign off on. And for the most part, those here are not my total creation, so I'm not as close to them. So I don't ever feel any desire to do them because of that. Do you think you could place in the women's 65 plus if you did them? Oh, if I did the women's 65 plus, do I think, yeah, yeah, yeah. Because here's the thing. There's just barbell weights that I can move in that category
Starting point is 00:07:24 probably much faster and stay um, and, and stay at a constant pace than a 65 year old woman. So yes, I do think I could place if I had to in that ridiculous, let's call it what it is, ridiculous scenario you just offered up. I don't think it's ridiculous. I think a lot of people would love to see you do it. How about the, um, how about the 14 yearolds? Do you think you could place in the 14, 15-year-old category? Probably not. Probably not. Let's talk about the young people for a second. We are seeing, would you say it's unprecedented and an evolution of the sport,
Starting point is 00:08:01 what we're seeing these 17-year-old girls do, these Mallory O'Briens and Emma Carys? Yes. And might not last, meaning that phase can happen now. I don't know if we'll continually be where 17-year-olds are qualifying, especially as the field, especially as all the current 16- to 17-year-olds become really good and approach 18, 19, 20, 21, and there's a lot of them now vying for spots. I think it becomes increasingly challenging for them to pull it off.
Starting point is 00:08:42 Okay, that's interesting. I didn't think of it that way. That's a really good point. As the field becomes deeper with all this youth and this talent, it just becomes increasingly more difficult as the entire scope of the field increases in numbers and participants.
Starting point is 00:09:01 Do you think that there's a perfect age, a peak age for a CrossFitter? Do you think that there's a perfect age, a peak age for a CrossFitter? Well, I think 23, 24 is a great place to be, traditionally speaking. But the thing is, these new young athletes are kind of rewriting that because they started CrossFit at such a young age. Meaning they started at... Hold on, I'm started at Hold on. Where someone like Brooke Wells, you're saying, may have started at 20 years old.
Starting point is 00:09:34 Yes, because the current batch is starting at 12 and 13. Johnny, where are we going? Where are we meeting? Yeah, on the floor? Okay, cool. I'll be right dave most of most of the games is going to be um streamed live on youtube thank you for that i'm excited to uh hunker down and and just watch all week but what about sunday sunday there is a two-hour uh portion of the finals that's on cbs do i have to have c to see that? That's a really good question. Probably in the U S yes. Um, I don't know internationally. I need to, I'll get back to you on that.
Starting point is 00:10:13 I don't have that answer for you. I'll ask you again tomorrow. Well, going back to the youth, are we ever going to see young men? Are we ever going to see a 17 year old guy in the CrossFit games? No, I don't think so. so no physically they're just not there like these no um the the swim event and the kayak are those two different scores one score and and how will reebok give away the money for the winner of that event? Do you have to wear your shoes in the kayak? You have to put the fins over your Reeboks and swim with Reeboks and fins on. And that's how you can win the money if you win the event.
Starting point is 00:10:56 So basically that one, there's no shoes in that event. Yeah, there's no money to be won from Reebok. Right. Okay. And the fins, you brought those back from the first ocean swim you mentioned. And if I recall correctly, one of the rules was that you had to return. You couldn't ditch your fins. You had to return with both your fins.
Starting point is 00:11:15 And if you didn't, there was a penalty. Why is there that rule? And will you have it this year? Well, why was there that rule that year? I don't even remember that rule. Are we going to have it this year? Well, why was there that rule that year? I don't even remember that rule. Are we going to have it this year? No, because I don't remember that rule. I think you might do that or we might have had that rule because someone might not feel comfortable with it.
Starting point is 00:11:37 Look, here's the deal. Most of these athletes are not training with fins, right, or have not been training with fins. There's a lot of swimming going on, but there wasn't a lot of swimming with fins and why they're returning. So, um, there could be a scenario where you might feel uncomfortable with them and want to kick them off, I guess. Maybe that's why we had it. Um, but I don't remember that rule. I believe you, but I don't remember it. Yeah. Don't believe me. Cause I could, my brain is mush. Well, let me ask you this. Do you have experience with fins? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:07 I got a lot of experience with fins. Can someone adapt quickly who's a good swimmer to just putting on fins and just working them and it help them? Well, good swimmers. Is there a scenario where it hinders them? Swimmers swim in high school. A lot of swimmers, true swimmers, they swim a lot with fins and they train with fins. So those swimmers have a significant advantage because they have their swimming background advantage and they swim with fins. Swimmers who haven't swam a lot with fins, they might not be used to it right away. It might take some adjusting to get used to.
Starting point is 00:12:41 So at first, it might throw off their stroke and throw off what they're used to. FanDuel Casino's exclusive live dealer studio has your chance at the number one feeling, winning, which beats even the 27th best feeling, saying I do. Who wants this last parachute? I do. Enjoy the number one feeling, winning, in an exciting live dealer studio, exclusively on FanDuel Casino, where winning is undefeated. 19-plus and physically located in Ontario.
Starting point is 00:13:10 Gambling problem? Call 1-866-531-2600 or visit connectsontario.ca. Please play responsibly. And then you'll quickly feel it and find it. Maybe not that quickly, but you'll, it'll, it won't be that difficult. Do you have any advice for them?
Starting point is 00:13:29 People who are new to fins? No. Are the fins noble fins? No. Noble doesn't make fins. If they did, they would be. Will there be biking this year?
Starting point is 00:13:44 We'll just have to wait and see. How many events have you announced? Fuck. Well, one now that I've announced. How many have we announced prior to that? I don't have the list in front of me. I'm not going to comfortably answer that question. I think six and seven haven't been announced yet.
Starting point is 00:14:04 I can confirm that. they have not been announced. And are those the ones where the biking will take place? You just have to wait and see. Right. Right. But I'm excited. It would be, it would be great for my numbers.
Starting point is 00:14:15 If you could announce a workout, um, on these, on these evening chats with me. Thank you. I'll consider that. Um, I've, uh, as I scroll through Instagram, tons and tons of people
Starting point is 00:14:28 are tagging you. A lot of them look like attendees. What is the protocol with getting a picture with you at the event? You just ask. And if I'm not busy running the event, I'll take a picture with you. Another question I keep seeing over and over all over is where can people get those hats? Those TDC hats? They're currently not for sale. Currently not for sale. I've had them. I've been wearing them for fucking years. Um, I should strike both sides because there's going to be a point where people aren't going to give a shit about it. Right?
Starting point is 00:15:01 No, I don't think so. People want them. Um, do you have any plans for putting them out? Nah, Not currently. I saw that one athlete has, it's interesting, it says that she withdrew from the competition. Did Bethany Shadburn withdraw herself or was she told she couldn't compete? Well, obviously she's got something going on. She failed the COVID test and she's symptomatic. She's showing symptoms, so she's not going to be able to compete. Did you personally have interaction with her? I have not. I haven't seen her since we've been here.
Starting point is 00:15:38 And there was a line in the CrossFit Games press release in regards to that, that when possible, those athletes will run in their own segregated lanes. Is that? Yeah. Yeah, when possible we're going to look at. But yes, when possible. What were you going to say? No, nothing. Does that throw a huge kink in the system? Oh, I mean, so naturally, especially outside, our sport's already spaced out. And, you know, indoors, this venue's really big. But there's some separation between the athletes.
Starting point is 00:16:17 So we might just add a little more. Has every athlete already been tested? Will we see any more announcements? Every individual has, yes. Teams are tomorrow, and we'll see what goes on there, right? Yeah, absolutely. And it said that Kara Saunders tested positive for the COVID but negative for the antigen, and so that she's game.
Starting point is 00:16:42 And the people that came in contact with them, Dan Bailey, Carrie Pearson, Danielle Brandon, would be sort of segregated and watch their own cars and stuff like that. Is that all true? Some of that's kind of inaccurate. So you've got the right concept going on of what's happening. But yeah, I mean, just check out the site. Check out the articles. We'll keep updating. Any staff come down with the COVID?
Starting point is 00:17:16 No. You look healthy. I'm glad you're healthy. Have you been working out every day when you're there? Every day. I haven't today. I will. I will. When I get back to the hotel. Right on. All right, buddy. Well, thank you. That's it. That's it. All right. I'm disappointed that that's it. I thought you'd do more. I have like a minute. Well, you scared me yesterday. You put the fear of God in me yesterday
Starting point is 00:17:45 so I'm going easy on you today. Give me one more and then we'll go. Jason Hopper signing with Nike. What do you think about that? I didn't know. Until just now, until I told you? Yeah, and I suppose some people are going to come at me and say,
Starting point is 00:18:01 well, that's why he shouldn't be in his position because he didn't even know who an athlete signed with. It's interesting that he signed with Nike. I thought Nike had dropped all of their individual athletes. Had you heard that? No. Okay. All right. What do you think of Nike signing him? I think it's very interesting. I'm truly concerned about him. I think it's a fucking ton of fucking pressure on the poor guy
Starting point is 00:18:26 between all the press he's getting and now this Nike sponsor the pressure is just insane yep thanks a lot say that again I enjoyed the conversation maybe tomorrow night
Starting point is 00:18:42 maybe alright later say hello to JMac Oh, good. Maybe tomorrow night. Maybe. All right, later. Hold on. Say hello to J-Mac. What's up, J-Mac? What's up, my friend? You're looking good, buddy. Hey, let me ask you a quick question. How is Dave doing this year?
Starting point is 00:18:59 Is he tense yet? He seems pretty calm. Too calm. Is he tense yet? He seems pretty calm, too calm. And the Dave Castor hangs up on me. You guys, thanks for checking in. Sorry I couldn't give you more notification that we were going live. I don't get very much notification myself.
Starting point is 00:19:23 It's always cool for Dave to let us just fire off a bunch of random questions at him. And we will talk to you guys later.
