Starting point is 00:01:02 Okay, I know 18 burpees, I gotta do 100 burpee penalty for that. Yesterday, I sat in front of a TV for two hours in the evening. Thank you, Karen, for being so patient. And my kids are like, "'Why are you watching so much BMX?' And my nine-year-old came over and he's like,
Starting point is 00:01:19 "'Oh my God, there he is.' I'm like, what do you mean? He's like, that's the guy I watched. When I wasn't watching skateboarding, I watched BMX. That's the guy I see coming on the show.' I said, he sure is. Sorry'm like, what do you mean? He's like, that's the guy I watched. When I wasn't watching skateboarding, I watched BMX. That's the guy. I see him coming on the show. I said, he sure is. Sorry, I'm having some computer issues this morning.
Starting point is 00:01:29 I can't get up my big computer, so I don't have any of the clips of Kieran ready. Thank god my notes didn't get erased. But here we are. OK, we'll start over. Pretend like I haven't said anything. All right, we're in. Where are you?
Starting point is 00:01:46 Just finished riding. I'm sat in the living room. In the UK? In the UK. So based in Corby, a small town that no one's going to know. I'm like an hour outside of London. Okay. And how far is that from your hometown of Gatehead? Gate's at like four hours so I'm from like the north of England an hour away
Starting point is 00:02:11 from the Scottish border so I'm like right close to Scotland very top and then now like I say I'm like an hour from London so Southish. And how long ago was it that you won the silver medal? Month, maybe not even like the 31st of July. And you're already back at it training? Yeah, we've got European championships in like two weeks. So it wasn't lucky enough to get like a big off season, had like two weeks after the games and then had to ramp it back up
Starting point is 00:02:43 because there's all the guys on the British team who didn't go to the games so they've been training all the way through so it's like can't really take a month off and let those guys excel you know what I mean so yeah straight back to it if you took off a month would your skills start to erode? 100% just the consistency like it would be like the consistency the I feel like the Fast twitch kind of side of it. You don't mean like you start to feel slower and like sluggish on the bike
Starting point is 00:03:12 So like yeah, like two weeks and for me as well. Like that was more after two weeks I was like itching to get back on the bike. So How old are you? 23 and you've been riding for 14 years 14 yeah, eight nine years old What's the longest you've taken off between when you were got your first bike and I Feel like Even through like injuries I think
Starting point is 00:03:43 not small or like would never promote it. But I feel like I've always rushed back. Actually, probably the longest I took off was COVID because we were told from British Cyclone, like we can't ride at all because it's not a good look for cyclone in general. If one of us ends up at hospital with the way hospitals were during covid it was crazy so i think during covid i had like or like six months off at one point which was like holy shit yeah would you just get on your bike in the kitchen and stand on it and balance on it or do wheelies i was like i like i feel like every it might not be in a straight
Starting point is 00:04:22 six months but like every month or something i I would like go to an outdoor skate park, just roll around, like just to do something, you know what I mean? Super like low risk. It was a strange feeling as well. Like if you look back to then, like I was saying, I wasn't training outside of riding. So it was like the only thing that I would do day in, day out, it was gone. It was like, this is rough. I was living with my girlfriend and her parents at the time.
Starting point is 00:04:47 So we were like confined to a bedroom. So I didn't have a home gym. We're going out like on a walk to break the dirt. It was rough. Hey, if that happens again, come out to Santa Cruz. You can stay with me. We got like 10 skate parks. We don't listen to any of that shit.
Starting point is 00:05:02 Oh, man, I've so many reasons. You could ride the whole time So many reasons to get back over America the minute honestly Hey, hey, did they do any dumb shit like they did here in Los Angeles? They filled some of the skate parks up with sand to try to get from it. They did that Yeah, they did it their sign and then I'm pretty sure some of them they did water to block the drains fill them with water What would you do? I saw in some videos, which I can't pull up unfortunately,
Starting point is 00:05:28 that sometimes you would even go, there's some old videos in your Instagram where you're riding at the skate park, even when the skate park's wet. And I guess you must have had to have done that a lot in the UK, huh? Oh, yay. English weather, kinda.
Starting point is 00:05:43 But that's the thing, as well, if you look in America, the best outdoor skate parks, you guys have amazing facilities like like public facilities. I mean, like UK or public facilities are pretty terrible because we have big indoor facilities that are, you know, a business. Yeah, that's where the good skate parks are. Yeah, it's just like so inconsistent whether that it's not it's almost not worth councils putting so much money in the outdoor facilities. They don't. Your indoor your indoor facilities are amazing. They're all the videos
Starting point is 00:06:15 on your Instagram and all over YouTube. It's crazy how nice those indoor facilities are. Yeah, I think we've got like, so the reason I moved to call me where I'm living now biggest skate park in Europe and like Saying call me to you. You know, I mean you'd never have an idea But like if I said call me to a BMX rider from Brazil, they'd be like call me No way, like this small town is known so much just for that skate park So it's kind of like our we have this skate park in California. I think we have two of them now They're called a woodward. So it's kind of like our, we have this skate park in California, I think we have two of them now. They're called Woodward, so it's kind of like that.
Starting point is 00:06:48 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, so I was out at Woodward at the start of this year, but the one in State College, Pennsylvania. Oh, okay, oh, I didn't even know there was one there. Yeah, yeah, so they got east and west. Your indoor park that I've seen looks better than Woodward. Woodward's cool. Well, actually, I've only been to Woodward in the winter, so I've seen looks better than Woodward. Woodward's cool. Well, actually I've only been to Woodward in the winter,
Starting point is 00:07:07 so I've never seen their outside facility, but their indoor facility does not look as good as yours. Yeah, Woodward, as a camp, for what it is, amazing, but for somewhere to train, this is just like, Woodward's not stuck in the past, but it's been there a long time. Right. Because this park's constantly changing with the evolution of the sport kind of thing? Like the aid for training where I live now is in my opinion the best place in the world
Starting point is 00:07:33 When I invited you on the show I didn't know this until last night when I was watching the video and I typed in your name into YouTube and it comes up Kieran Reilly first man ever to do something called the triple flare. And before we went live, before I was to hit the button like a jackass, you were explaining to me, I said, why do they call it the triple flare? Will you explain that again?
Starting point is 00:07:55 Why don't they call it a triple backflip? Why do they call it a triple flare? So in BMX, in a lot of sports, like using quarter pipes, if you go up a quarter pipe, turn around 180 degrees, come back down, it's called an air. So if you go up, do an air and do a flip, it gets called a flare. And then what I did was go up, do a triple flip,
Starting point is 00:08:18 and then right at the end, I do a twist to come back down. And you know what's crazy in that video, and I'll have you walk us through the whole story cause it's wild. As I'm watching that video, it shows you make the attempt and then basically there's so many fascinating things there. They built the ramp specifically for you, which shows how much faith your team has in you, right?
Starting point is 00:08:40 I mean, that's just crazy that they built that ramp for you. Then you tried and then when you didn't,, you tried for like six to 10 days straight. And then when you didn't land it, you went away. And that's when you found CrossFit. And then you came back and you did it. And I didn't even when I invited you on the show, I didn't even expect that story to be unveiled. But when you landed it, you landed it perfect. Which was crazy, no wobble, nothing. So it shows 20 crashes, and then when you finally land it, I thought when you finally landed it, there'd be some sort of wobble, but you landed it like, like a fucking year. That was part of the reason I was so happy, because I was like, if I had landed it, super sketchy,
Starting point is 00:09:20 like perfectly landed, I was still gonna take it. I was like, so for it to land it that good and be able to call it quits, like. I mean, it was good, good feeling to get that. And then you can see as well as raw motion on my face, because I actually, you turned into a gorilla, dude, you screamed and turned into a gorilla. That was some primal. Honestly, it was the very last day that we had the facility.
Starting point is 00:09:44 I'd been in there since like 9 a.m. I think I pulled the trigger like 8 30 p.m Everyone had like kind of you could see the energy in the room had just changed everyone had kind of lost hope I Was at the point where I was like Again, like I've just came here put myself through all this I'm not even gonna get it done and then it was like I knew we had a couple attempts left in his nose Like I kind of got angry. I was like, I we had a couple attempts left in us and I was like I kind of got angry I was like I'm gonna give this attempt 110% either I'm gonna land it because I felt like in the attempts before like I
Starting point is 00:10:13 was committed to a 95% mark where the crash wasn't gonna be gnarly because I was almost expecting it I was hoping to get lucky enough that I would just catch wheels. And so I was like, well, this one, I'm just going to commit 110%. And if I don't land it, that I'm done. But at that point I needed that like excuse almost to get out of it. So I was like, if I crash really bad, at least I don't have to get back on top of this roll and do it again. So, and then that one where I committed fully was the one. Could you, what you're saying makes complete sense in the abstract, but when you say commit fully,
Starting point is 00:10:53 do you mean like the final flare or the speed or the grip on the handlebars? Like, because I'm guessing on the other side is like that 1% of doubt where you're also trying to make sure that you when you crash Like you said, yeah, you don't get hurt. What is that final? everything together so like When I was training the trick I was gritting my teeth Gripping the balls tight the curtain pedaling as hard as I could towards the ramp and then when I would go to do it on the legit ramp I
Starting point is 00:11:24 could feel that I was just holding back a little bit, you know, like, and then on that final attempt, I was like, I'm just gonna treat it like I did when I was training. I'm gonna grip my teeth and I'm gonna give it everything. But the training mean when you were landing in the foam pit in the beginning. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:40 So doing that, like the confidence that is there to call as hard as you can, like give everything. And the problem with that was when I would crash doing that like the confidence that is there to call as hard as you can leave like give everything And the problem with that was when I would crash doing that in the foam pit. It would it would be like a Way gnarly of the crash then if I just under rotated slightly So it was committing to the fact of being like right? I'm either gonna land it or I'm gonna over rotate that's going to be a lot worse than all these crashes. Like, but that's what I needed to do. Hey, did you ever do it a second time?
Starting point is 00:12:13 Nah, I got asked to do it for her Italy's got talent TV show. And, and then they asked me like what it would take to do it. And I was like, I would need a healthy incentive to do that trick again Right, right, right It was like an ordeal on it Honestly, like and I've never ever had a mental block or feel anything near what it was when I was doing that You won that you won the silver medal this year. I want to go back to the triple flair I want you to walk us through the whole story. But in an interview you did, you said that you went into your
Starting point is 00:12:52 fight. You get two attempts, right? It's basically like you get a dance you get. How long do you get? Two minutes? It's a 60 second run on a course that like, I guess the best way to describe it would be like you choreograph, you plan the run and all the tricks. And it's judged on a course that like, I guess the best way to describe it would be like you choreograph, you plan the run and all the tricks. And it's judged on a big criteria, originality, execution of tricks, difficulty of tricks, originality, use of the course, how well you land, like there's a massive criteria and it's like an overall impression.
Starting point is 00:13:22 And does Colby build a replica of it before you go? So countries, uh, the last Olympics of Tokyo 2020, a few countries built replicas because the course was released early this time, the course was only released a month before the games in order to kind of like, to try and deter people from building the course. Cause that's a quick turnaround. And we were one of the countries that still managed to get one done. to try and deter people from building a course, because that's a quick turnaround. We were one of the countries that still managed to get one done. So there's a couple of countries that got a course. So we just get a photo, no dimensions or anything like that. But
Starting point is 00:13:54 the main reason you build a course is to figure out the timing. So you know where on the course you're going to go, because in a practice with 12 people, it's really hard to figure that out. Right. So yeah, we were lucky enough to have a practice course. Uh, actually the art, like the Royal Air Force, we used it, a hanger at the Royal Air Force in England and yeah, they built replica course. So they announced it and you have one month. And so you have to leave probably to the Olympics one week before, and then
Starting point is 00:14:23 it takes one week to build it. So I'm guessing you had like two weeks in the middle there. Yeah. Yes. We had like about I think around 10 days Only they had like 30 people Round-the-clock building like it was it wasn't even we have some courses that pretty like simple like less ramps and stuff like that This was like a jam-packed course So it was like a big job to get it done. And then, yeah, we were lucky enough to get like 10 days. What city was that in? Shorebury it's called.
Starting point is 00:14:50 A small town, like two hours from here, but they've got a massive air base. And so you started Chora, you went there and spent 10 days. Do you choreograph the whole thing yourself? Yeah, so like we've got coaches, we've got coach that's very new to BMX still. And it's basically like our coach is super important at events.
Starting point is 00:15:11 So we'll plan a run and he'll help out with that. You know what I mean? It's kind of like good to have someone on the outside looking in because you might think a trick or a line that you're doing around the course looks really good. And then having him watch it back and say, maybe you should do this, maybe you should swap this trick and do that later on the run.
Starting point is 00:15:28 And yeah, like that helps a lot just to have someone like with experience. And when you put together your. 60 second dance, your 60 second ride, are you thinking, hey, I'm putting this together to win the gold or I'm putting this together to win the bronze or I'm putting this together to be safe. Like, would you put it together? How do you put it together? For the Olympics? It's I'm putting this together to win gold for the for the Olympics. You know, you're like, go ahead. If you went to like world championships, getting top five is a great result. You know, if you went to the games and you got fifth, amazing result. But then going to the Olympics, I feel like as horrible as it sounds, like fourth
Starting point is 00:16:13 is the same as tenth because you didn't, you know, you're still an Olympian. Like it's the same title. And so going there, it's like you want a medal, but like I built a run that if I'd done the run, I would have won gold. And it was just small mistakes in that run that cost me the gold, you know? And still really proud to take home a medal. Like, but yeah, building that run was all about executing the run that would take the top spot.
Starting point is 00:16:40 So maybe give me an example, but if there was like, if you knew there was like 10 seconds left and you could just do a simple trick, you'd be like, no, I have to actually I know I'm going to be tired did in the whole run and that was a huge goal for me to finish with that trick because it's a huge exclamation point on the run to be able to do it under fatigue. And then you'll see in the first run I did a big trick and then finished with a front flip after it. And then in the second run, I did the big trick and didn't land very well. So So unfortunately missed that front flip which could have been the difference between gold and silver. Oh damn How close were the points? How close were you to gold? I'm not exactly sure But I think it was like I think it might have been less than a point. I think it was Close. Yeah Do you know the guy who won?
Starting point is 00:17:42 Yeah, yeah Argentinian guy Jose. So he doesn't speak like loads of English, but I still want to congratulate him. He's like super nice guy. And I mean, uh, he was the, I think he might've ended up being one of like three medalists from Argentina, whole Olympics. Wow. W was there someone who was supposed to win?
Starting point is 00:18:03 Yeah, there was favorites. So like, there's, you can bet on the win? Yeah, there was favorites. So like you can bet on the Olympics. So you could see the favorites. I mean, Logan Martin won in Tokyo. He was one of the favorites. Anthony John John, the French guy who got bronze has won every event this year up until the games.
Starting point is 00:18:19 So he won both Olympic qualifying events. He won the one World Cup we had this year in Japan, and then he won a few smaller events, so like he was winning everything this year and he was home turf that they obviously had a course to train on. Like he was the favorite going in. Um, does he have, does he have a unique trick? Everyone's got, yeah, like, uh, not like he has a unique way of getting around the course, like people have unique, like their own like tricks they're known for.
Starting point is 00:18:54 But Anthony, uh, he's more actually known for just the way he rides the course. He's really good at keeping his speed. He's really good at finding lines that suit him well. Uh, I'd say that's like his strength. And did you do anything there that you were like, Oh, I don't know if I should be like a trick that was like, Hey, I'm really pushing my limits with this one. The 720 dub, what the second last trick, like both times going up to it, my legs were on fire. But like, I can't, you can't catch it. It feels like you've done a minute max pal on yourself.
Starting point is 00:19:28 Like right at that 52nd mark, I'm going to do the biggest trick of the run. And I'm just thinking like, I can feel my hands almost like opening up on the grips cause my grips go in like, and it was just like, I've got to do it because if I don't do it, I'm going to kick myself way more than if I try and crash. So it's like these mental battles you have that last less than a second, because that's all you've got. So between 10 feet before the ramp and then being in the air, you've got like one second and you have a whole conversation in your head of like, oh God, I'm burning out.
Starting point is 00:20:04 I don't want to do this. Then're also like you've got to do it like So so that that shit creeps up on you fast you draw they say go you have 60 seconds and you feel great and Within 30 seconds shits already fall on you. You have to keep it together Yeah, yeah Like it see the closest feeling I could describe it was a minute on the assault bike like go because it it just like on the assault bike where it doesn't hit you like slowly it just is like I'm not bad I'm not bad I'm not bad oh my god the lactate is everywhere like because we use our whole body you know what I mean like we're gripping the handlebars tight where quads, calves, like your legs are doing so much like what we call pumping to gain speed and
Starting point is 00:20:49 pedaling and then you throw in the bike rounds that you're using your body like you don't breathe when you do tricks because you end up as you take off you'll you hold your breath and so yeah like it all of a sudden hits you for those last like 15 seconds. Yeah, it's crazy. You know, it's funny. That's the part I guess you can't appreciate when you're watching from home. The, the, the, the fitness part, right? Because everyone's just watching you do the jumps, but it's like, Hey dude, I have to actually get the speed. So many people have, have like said, like, I'll be talking about how hard it is.
Starting point is 00:21:20 And they're like, Oh, how long is it? And I'm like a minute. And they're like, Oh, it's only a minute. it isn't there like, Oh, how long is it? And I'm like a minute and they're like, Oh, it's only a minute. Go on a piece of cardio kit for me and do minute max cows. That's how it feels. Yeah. That's crazy. Hey, anyone, anyone else, you know, in the space who does CrossFit?
Starting point is 00:21:38 Uh, so when I started doing CrossFit and started having the correlation with good results, I started seeing riders start to pick it up. So there's a couple of people who are training in a CrossFit gym but not do the CrossFit modality. I literally train CrossFit to a T. They might be in the gym using the UGs, whereas I do all the skills gymnastic. I enjoy that side of it. But yeah, there's definitely a couple who have picked it up.
Starting point is 00:22:06 Yeah. Um, uh, Rambler, uh, Seve, can you ask me if he does knees over toes, exercise, uh, for the shock of the impact of the BMX? Did you do take care of your knees? Do you do special protocols? That actually much my knees. I did a lot of my ankles cause I had a lot of ankle injuries, like pretty much broke off my ankles, tore ligaments in my left angle
Starting point is 00:22:26 and right to be fair. Like, so I do loads of knee over toe stuff, but for my ankles, more than my knees. How do you tear ligaments in your ankles? Crashes or just... Crashes, yeah. The worst one I actually did, I tore both sides, so my ATFL and PTFL, and it was in a foam pit. Yeah, I just didn't expect to like land with impact and I just happened to hit like, because it'll happen sometimes where you build up, you know, like as you go through the foam
Starting point is 00:22:54 and it'll get to a point where like you've landed on the foam and it'll get hard. You know what I mean? Like squash up to a certain point. And as I've hit a hard point unexpected, my ankle bounced over this way and then as the muscles on the inside of my ankle contracted to pull it back it shot back so fast that I then snapped the ligaments on the inside. Did you feel it? Did you know right away? Oh I knew so I just like had
Starting point is 00:23:18 this hot flush like I felt something pop and then I got really really hot and I was like sweating and I was like oh this isn't good and then I got out the phone pit I was like super almost like starting like I get stressed in the phone pit like so I get out and I sat down for a minute Metapause you were going through menopause in the phone pit Yeah I was going through my midlife crisis you you know, right, right. And I get out of the phone pit and I'm like, I started to calm down a little bit. I thought, oh, maybe I just like overreacted. Maybe I just tweaked it a little bit. Went to stand up, fell over.
Starting point is 00:23:51 I was like, this isn't good. But then it actually didn't bruise at all. So I didn't think I'd done major damage. So I ended up riding European championships like 10 days later major damage. So, uh, and right in European championships, like 10 days later, wow. So no surgery for that. It was like super painful, but in my head, I was like, well, I've been told, I didn't go and see anyone. Uh, really, I was just like speaking with British like learning about,
Starting point is 00:24:21 and they were asking about your bruising. Can you tell us what this feels like and all this like just over the phone and showing the photos and because it didn't bruise and everything like that isn't usually the case when you tear a ligament because the bleed and they're like yeah it must just be a tear like it must just be a sprain tape up super tight it's gonna be a little bit sore but you aren't gonna cause any more damage so taped up super tight road euros and then literally it wasn't until last year because I'd been having problems with it for like a year and a half afterwards. My
Starting point is 00:24:50 knee overture mobility was terrible. My ankle was always super tight on the morning like it was always sore after riding stuff like this like yeah like any squat movements were tough like I had to always got lifters and and then eventually I got an MRI and yeah I just had a bunch of scar tissue both sides from where I'd been torn. Got some injections. Oh, they didn't do surgery and clean it out? No no so I got these new injections, it's like you get three injections, it was dumbed down to me obviously like I'm not sure what I does, but basically, I was told that one goes in, melts away the scar tissue. The second one goes
Starting point is 00:25:30 in opens, opens up the like, I guess the blood vessels, and the third one is a glucose that makes it sticky and tacky. And then that stickiness will then help to repair all the minor tears that are in it. So basically, like, I think what they described was like the scar tissue on top of the ligament was tightening the ligament. So it was almost like pushing it together. So that's why there was no mobility. And then melt away the scar tissue would open back up to the point where like, I could get my new
Starting point is 00:26:01 overture was better, and all this kind of thing. But like since getting those injections, I got like three injections a week for a month. Actually, it's been 90 percent since then. Heidi, is he legal? Yeah, he's 23. He's fair game. He's totally he's totally fair game. Get him. Get him. Your you. Tell me about how the idea came. So you were the first person to do a quad... What's that one called?
Starting point is 00:26:37 When you spin the bike? Tail whip? Tail whip. So you were the first person to do a quad tail whip. First person to do some sort of variation with that trick. Not the first to do the quad tail whip. That was an American guy, Mike Spinner. And what variation did you do? So like tail whips where you spin the bike round and bar spins. Like there's different combinations with that where I've been the first.
Starting point is 00:27:03 So just recently, like last week. I did the first Double tail whip to double bar spin. I I was like a world first And so that's two that's two where the bike circles underneath you and then two turning the handlebars all while yeah. Yeah God that's crazy. Hey, there's I said sucks. I can't pull up the videos There's this video that I watched it I laughed my ass off your little kid and I don't know if it's your first tail whip or your first double tail whip But your body is you land it but your body is like all over the place It looks it looks for sure like something went wrong
Starting point is 00:27:40 And you wrote I'm so proud of this and it looks like chaos. Yeah. So that was the thing, like as a kid, like there's technique to do in tailwhips, which is like, you've got to stay over on top of the bike. You've got to keep your feet together and all. And like, as a kid, I was like, as long as I get my feet back on, I'm not bothered what happens. So like, the craziest body position when I do them.
Starting point is 00:28:05 And I was just a tiny little kid trying to throw around these heavy bikes. Bikes for kids, the technology wasn't there to make them light and stuff like that because it was like, kids aren't really, A, that bothered about doing big tricks and B, it makes kids' bikes really expensive if you do that. So yeah, I was just trying to throw around these heavy bikes as a 100 pound kid. Yeah, that is what it looked like. It looked like the bike was throwing you and you not throwing the bike.
Starting point is 00:28:33 Yeah, it felt like that. Yeah, that was crazy. So how do you get the idea, if someone had done two back two back flips with a flare and then all of a sudden, how do you get the idea that you think you can do three? So I was doing the double flare in competition. I kind of started to get known for doing that trick. I was one of the people doing it more consistently and I was just talking to a team manager at
Starting point is 00:29:01 Red Bull and I, you know, telling them like, I'd love to do a project with a significant worlds first, not just like a new combination, but like something, something big and like almost jokingly, I was like, oh, I wonder what it'd be like to try a triple flare. And like, he just said it in passing. And- Just on the phone, you're on the phone with him or in person?
Starting point is 00:29:20 I think we were just like out somewhere, like nowhere important, just like a bunch of athletes. We're all out like at a dinner or something or like an athlete summit. And I mentioned it. And, and then like a week later, he called us and was like, right, like we've looked into it, like you want to get it done. We can do this. We can make the triple flat happen.
Starting point is 00:29:36 And I was like, Oh yeah, let's, let's do it. I was still underestimated it so much. I was like, so you didn't know when you said it, you didn't know that he was going to call whoever's in charge of the budget or it wasn't like a direct pitch. I was just like, it was an idea. And like he rang us and was like, look, if you actually want to do this, like Red Bull or Stoke to be on board with that, like we can make it happen. And I was like, Massively underestimated the tricks on the phone.
Starting point is 00:30:03 I'm just like, yeah, let's do it. Why not? And then I got there and it was an ordeal of two weeks of my life. And what are the major, what are the major challenges is speed? Is it speed or, um, or the ability to rotate or what's the biggest challenge? It was the lack of like being, when you rotate and that fast, the margins to land and get and stay on two wheels so small. Like so if you like you mean like each extra flip you do there's the margins close of how yeah there's control of the speed whether you're going too fast or too slow. Yeah like it's and and as well, because that trick, you know,
Starting point is 00:30:46 I'm trying to go as high as I can, but then like the way it worked, it was almost like the faster you went, then you would miss this, like, call it like G and out where you use the ramp to get a good flip. And so like, I was flipping so fast that a lot of the times I would land on two wheels, but the momentum would just throw you either way. Right. It was like getting the rotation done that quick, but then still managing to
Starting point is 00:31:12 land without momentum, still rotating was like so hard to figure out. Hey. And so the video walks us through the process. Um, that must've been expensive have been expensive to build that ramp. Yeah, well, they like Red Bull are amazing with stuff like this. I mean, they closed the skate park for what was probably maybe like well over two weeks in total, you know, like to get close to skate park, do the build, get in there. I think the first time we had like eight days or something like that, maybe eight or nine days. Second time we had like four days. And then they've got the build
Starting point is 00:31:48 and take down between that because we went in, we took ramps out of the park, built that setup and then they, the builders had to then take that setup down, rebuild the skate park to open to public, you know what I mean? Like the next day. So it's like, it was a big job, like a big job. And that was that Colby No, that was a asylum skate park. It's called in Nottingham so they base so they have to rent the skate park out pay the skate park owner for the park Yeah, and and then convince them that like hey, we're gonna build this take it down the whole shebang. So it's it's it's a lot Yeah, like an asylum skate park. I'm lucky. So Jack who owns it is a bit an X BMX rider. So we just, he loved,
Starting point is 00:32:28 like he was on board second. The idea came up like that. That's the beauty of it. And, and who is it? Is the security pretty high? Is it like, Hey, people can't come watch. It's just like, well that was the hard thing was keeping it a secret. Like because there was a couple of people out there who were kind of like toying with triple flare, talking about wanting to try it, build a setup.
Starting point is 00:32:53 And so the hardest part was the six months between the first attempts. I was thinking about that. Why did anyone sneak in and try to take it from you? Yeah, like not telling anyone was so hard. It was so hard. And the thing was, you know, like you'd show like a couple of close friends, like this one I've been working on and someone tells someone and then then there's room and it got to the point where there
Starting point is 00:33:14 was rumors for a while. And like I'd even have like, close friends say it was like, oh, like, you know, so and so was saying apparently you've been trying to triple fly. Like, can I see you? And I'll be like, what? I'm not trying to triple fly. I was literally blatantly lying to close friends because it was getting to the point where if the rumours got out of England, and it became an online rumour, I was like, well, I don't want anyone else knowing that I'm working towards it So yeah, it was it was so hard to keep it quiet
Starting point is 00:33:48 And then when I did land the trick I had to keep it quiet until the video was done So I've got the clip on my phone for like two weeks just dying to put the clip out there like oh, it was my field Had you ever even before so so you get there the ramps built and Right away there in the video. They show there's a problem You can't get enough speed so then they have to make that kind of like that wonky They just screw an extra piece on there. It's kind of wonky and you got to go up even higher but the so like that help load the speed but the worst thing about that was like I'm like 20 what what must have been like 25 feet up in this roll in and everyone else is down at
Starting point is 00:34:33 the bottom by the ramp, like cheering me on, you know, like, like help me get pumped up. And it's like, I'm still up there all alone. Yeah. It was like the weirdest mental battle I've ever like ever been on 20 people down there shouting But you just feel so On your own at the top of this role and getting ready to go So you're on this unique ramp that you've never been on about to try a trick that you've never done that no one's ever done Yeah, and it's like so everything's new except the bike. Yeah
Starting point is 00:35:02 And that like I feel like it's like this. I think, I don't know the exact saying, you know, but like people will say, you know, once someone's done something and it's possible, it's way easier because it's been done. Oh, well that person did it. Like you can, I don't know, you can look at how they did it or you could be, I guess it's just the knowing it's possible. Right. But after attempting it, like I started to genuinely think like,
Starting point is 00:35:26 is this possible? Like, yeah, I was like, because I was putting work in, in like, what like we were saying earlier, the marginal gains of it, it was like, I could get so, so close. And I started to think maybe there's a reason no one's done this before, you know, maybe you can get really close to it and it is just this last that last inches or the reason that's not possible And the crashes are epic. I mean the that I mean the videos why it's crazy. How many times you crash? Yeah body was like Body was done and there's tricks at the skate park now that I can try You know, you can crash 20 times on a trick, keep getting back up with the adrenaline.
Starting point is 00:36:07 The crashes were so big that it was like two, three, maybe four crashes a day. And then your body's just like, I'm done. Your adrenaline plummeted and you were just, I just felt like weak and just like all the pain set in. And every crash was like, yeah, it wasn't like like I wasn't bouncing like rubber towards the end of it So you try in the video? It says you try for six days somewhere else I read you tried for seven days But basically you try it and at the end when you do do you know that on that first attempt on that first? You know week that you try
Starting point is 00:36:43 Do you remember your last run? Yes, all failing the last so the last It was crazy. Actually the last day The last day like the most people came down to come watch I had loads of friends everything come down like sponsors I was like everyone came down because they're like it's the last day today's day. He's been so close all week And then on the last day. I didn't even try once Couldn't even I just I couldn't even get into the mindset to try it once Like because because the pre the crashes had taken a toll on you and just so you were mentally you were mentally fucked
Starting point is 00:37:17 Yeah, now you literally I was just absolutely burnt out and mentally the mental fatigue was insane like dealing with burnt out and mentally the mental fatigue was insane like dealing with get you cry it all that week did you cry it all that way I cried after I landed it and it's the only time I've ever cried happy tears like wow like I literally it was like uncontrollable motion like relief adrenaline like just how about on that how about on that week of failure did you cry at all that week I didn't know I didn't cry because I feel like it wasn't like it wasn't sad but it was like frustration yeah like so much belief in myself going in and then like every day I was just like getting shaved down a
Starting point is 00:38:00 bit you know I mean like no not today And then it was, it's also hard as well. Like what people like don't think about is like everyone else there, the filmers, the ramp builders, you know, it's great for them because they just get, they get the luxury of being able to watch this go down. Right, right. Everyone's endorphins are high. Everyone's in the, like such a good good mood You know every day at we'll go out for dinner After like each day of trying the trick and I get to dinner and I'm like depleted Right ashes another day that I didn't land the trick and everyone else is it then I like yeah tomorrow You got it tomorrow trying to help you know, I mean trying to stay positive but in your head you're just like so like fatigued like
Starting point is 00:38:43 Did you dream it all that week? Do you remember any of your dreams? Did you have any like so like fatigued like did you dream it all that week you remember any of your dreams did you have any like like it was so I struggled to sleep all week and when I would dream I would picture myself landing it like it well like I could visualize it and every time I could visualize it my head went and then I remember thinking like after I landed it. I'm gonna have the best night's sleep After I landed I just lay there wide awake I probably watched it like hundred times Yeah, it was the opposite feeling And it's cool that you have the the the video team
Starting point is 00:39:19 I'm assuming it's the Red Bull team their world-class and so you so you got, you also know that it's recorded perfectly. Yeah, like, so one of the filmers is a close friend that I grew up with. So, you know, he grew up with me trying to become professional BMAX rider, I grew up with him being a filmer down the skate park trying to be a professional filmer. And then like, we'd always joke, you know, like, he's like, you know, like, when you eventually one day get on Red Bull, and you do a project, like, you better, like, he's like, you know, like when you eventually one day get on Red Bull and you do a project, like you better, you better sort me out, you know, and like, I was like, yeah, yeah, of course.
Starting point is 00:39:49 Yeah. And then now it's like, I'm riding freshly and he's out there traveling the world filming. Like, oh, that's awesome. It's pretty sick. Like, yeah, like it's been sick to see each other achieve what we want to do. You know, did you request him for that event? Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:06 You did? I had two filmers. Wow, you came in good with your promise from being a little kid, that's awesome. Like, he filmed like when I first, when I was working full time and trying to get my name out there more and doing YouTube and stuff like that,
Starting point is 00:40:21 like he was helping film the channel, he was editing videos for us, like with sponsors and everything, I'd always go straight to him if I needed content. Like so as soon as this came about like I wanted him and then we also had Matty Lambert who's like a really famous filmer in the BMX world. He's done a lot of Red Bull projects for different athletes. So yeah we had the two. So Matty actually he shot the main clip in that video of the triple flare and He was doing like manual focus and he said he's never been so scared. Oh Yeah, I bet that shit's the fucking nerve-wracking okay, so you, the last day goes horribly wrong.
Starting point is 00:41:07 You can't even make one attempt. Who do you walk over to and be like, hey dude, I'm done? Or does someone tell you you're done? That was the thing, a call and it was so hard. So again, I was there from like 9 a.m. until like, probably 9 p.m., just I was there from like 9am until like, probably 9pm, just almost refusing to be like, I was like, it can't end like this. And then like, you start dropping like the, the kind of hints or the seeds of like, you know, if it isn't it today, do I get another
Starting point is 00:41:38 opportunity to do this? Then I'm thinking, you know, it was my first year with Red Bull, it was like, first year of Red Bull. It was like. First year of Red Bull. They, they put on this huge project for me and I don't even do it. Yeah. They're like, fuck you kid. We're not doing this again. Yeah. And I was like stressing and then look, they're like Red Bull, my team manager.
Starting point is 00:41:57 Everyone was amazing. And they were like, they, they completely like, there was not a bad word said. They were like mate you beat yourself up for this for the last week like if today's not the day it will we'll be back you know i mean like and and throughout all day they were super supportive because i think they could see i was struggling but then i was just trying to be resilient to the point of being like nah today is the day and i think eventually at like 9.m. I was just shattered and I was like nah It's it's not it's not meant to be today and I was lucky enough to go back
Starting point is 00:42:32 Look at I guess I guess Leo West Westbrook Seve. I didn't think you'd actually read my message Let alone set this up nice work. Yeah, dude. Kieran was so easy I thank you for I don't remember who sent me the DM but someone sent me a DM and they're like hey that guy's a crossfitter who won the silver medal Yeah, it must have been this guy and it was it was you were so easy to deal with. Thank you so much for making this So easy. Oh, man. Thanks. I'm gonna watch watch the pod. So it's pretty sick. Oh awesome Even though I fucked the whole thing up today So, okay, so you go home that night Karen and you call your mom or your dad or do they tell you actually, tell you that they're going to try again in six months?
Starting point is 00:43:12 Or is it just kind of up in the air? Like is it just like it's a failure? It's like we're going to try again, you know, like, budgets will renew the next year, like, we'll do it once budget renews, whatever. And I had a busy competitive season. So it was like trying to figure it out. And then I just, I kind of just had hopes that I'd be back for it. But like, I did have like my manager and stuff, Red Bull saying, you know, that they'll make it happen. And then like, maybe a couple of months down the line, they hit me up. They're
Starting point is 00:43:40 like, right, we want to go back for this. When do you want to do it? Like we can do it like next year. I was like first week in January And you have to fit that in how many competitions are you doing a year in general on average For I think like for us. It's like it depends, but I mean sometimes it can be upwards of like 15 Okay, so you're competing once a month and then you know that this trick it takes a major toll on your body and your headspace And it could and it could very well injure you so you're out. So you're trying to figure out a place to wedge this Another week long attempt at this thing. So 2022 as well like I wasn't like a part of the like British cycling Olympic squad, you know, like I wasn't,
Starting point is 00:44:26 so I was like, I need to make sure I can compete this year so I can attain points, so I can become part of British Cycling, so I can try and work towards the Olympics, because our qualifying system for the previous games had been a two-year point system, so I assumed it was gonna be the same. And so I was like, I need to do this ASAP to make sure I'm healthy for these events.
Starting point is 00:44:47 So as soon as I knew I was going to do it again, and they asked when I was like, yeah, I'll do the first week of January. I'll do it. Right when the budget renews, give me, build that ramp back. Yeah, get me. And it was a great idea at the time. And then it's like, you turn up to a skate park in Mansfield in winter in England. It's like zero degrees. You were in there freezing.
Starting point is 00:45:09 Like, oh, it was freezing in there when you actually landed it. It was like, I'm pretty sure some days it's below zero. Like, wow. Freezing in that, like, that's why, like the first time you see, I had a t-shirt on every attempt. Second time that hoodie or like sweater that I was wearing did not come off. Like, wow. Uh, it was so funny too. I had like a base layer on and then a sweat and you can see at the end, like, I think like they
Starting point is 00:45:39 cut out the actual clip. I'm trying to take it off because like, like I'm instantly like, Oh, we'll come on like'm like so hot and like all this like the sweat and it's just all hitters at once because I've just landed the trick. And I'm trying to take off the base there and the sweat at the same time. And I'm so like sweaty and it's so tight, I can't get off. And one of the lads come behind us, just rips them both off boat like from behind over my head rips both my earrings out like hoodie goes flying so you get there and well let me go back a second so you so you you have your week you don't do it and obviously if you don't even make an attempt on the last day on the last 12 hour day it's just fucking crazy.
Starting point is 00:46:25 There's all these people involved, the ramp builders, the filmers, your manager. It's already leaked that you're trying to break the world record. Then you have the pressure of like, oh shit, what if someone sneaks in and does it before I do it? And then tell me the part, whose idea is it that you should, you should change up your training and your diet? Because you say in one of the interviews I watch, you're like, yeah, I decided I would start getting some marginal gains by changing my diet and training and that's when
Starting point is 00:46:46 the video shows you go into a CrossFit gym. So it was like a talk of between all of us pretty much that whole week like the word marginal gains stuff like this and the owner of the BMX brand I ride for he actually is a BMX rider for Red Bull as well, so he was there. And we were talking about his modular gain thing and we were talking about the gym and the fact I wasn't going to the gym. I always had this denial of a ride an extra hour. That's the same and it obviously is not. I had gotten into watching CrossFit through a friend, another guest now, ex BMX rider who was just training CrossFit for fun and I got in watching it and I was like as soon as I went home pretty much after
Starting point is 00:47:30 that first time that first week of feeling it I was like straight on Google like CrossFit gym call me and the first place that came up is the gym I still train at now and like yeah like like I knew that that was the biggest thing that I was overlooking by, you know, like, that was what was separating me from, from the guys at the top and what I could have been able to do. And like, I was seeing you just before we came on air, like, the instant change in body composition from just six months of training. Yeah, he just wasn't used to it
Starting point is 00:48:03 at all. And like how much better I felt on the bike. I went into it as well, like, cause I always have little things that I'll tell myself to give myself confidence. So like I went into it the second time and I was like, I'm not a couple of kilos lighter. I'm going to spin faster. I'm a bit leaner. I'm probably going to be more aerodynamic and all these like they're probably not logical But it builds confidence in yourself, you know what mean it and like right that was as big as the actual physical side of it Was it all foreign to you when you went in there did you have to do an on-ramp class and they have to teach You all the movements all it was so so foreign
Starting point is 00:48:41 Like I hope like and as well want like the first few classes I've done at the gym like I could buy so we've actually got uh we've got Randy on Friday and my score was in on the Randy's the snap the snatch one by snatchers. Yeah. I think it was like my second or third session in the gym and I saw what the score logged like 2021 and I was like oh my god so like this Friday will be the first time I've done it since like my third session be the first time I've done it since like my third session at the gym. Oh wow.
Starting point is 00:49:07 The first session I went in, I think I did a team ward on a Saturday and I went in and I got put with like a few lads and I remember like, I think we started like on the scale and I was like, Oh, how would you do this? What'd you do on the scale? Like I had no clue. Like so, it was so foreign. Hey, what about the humility factor? Here you are, you're one of the best athletes in the world.
Starting point is 00:49:31 You have fucking balls of steel and you go into this gym and there's like a 52 year old lady who's fucking putting it to you. Smoking you, yeah. Yeah, was that weird? It was weird, but it was so good. Like I think that was so good for the work ethic side of it in the gym because it meant I was like, oh I really need to put some work in this. If you walked in
Starting point is 00:49:54 it was easy, you wouldn't see it the same. So when I walked in and like you're saying, you're just getting absolutely smoked by everyday gym guys. It's like right. I'm lacking and And you were 21 years old. So like you said your body was right like within two weeks You looked and you walked by the mirror and you're like what the fuck's going on here. Yeah, I just have like like new begins I said the word for it. Like yeah, the change was so quick like Yeah, what I noticed in the in the the video, like I was saying before, was your head. Like, your head looked like it got a little thicker
Starting point is 00:50:29 and your jaw got square so quick. It was kind of crazy. You started, like, you were having, like, obviously some sort of, like, I don't know, testosterone response to it. Yeah, I feel like the lean, like, definitely leaning out a bit, like, my facial features became way more prominent. And then, like, there's literally, like, a running joke in the like BMX community me and all my friends everything
Starting point is 00:50:50 about like the fact that I just fat neck like I'm sure it must be because of the way I ride I do a lot of rotations and stuff like this and it's like yeah so you do have a thick neck your neck's almost thicker than your head. You do have a thick neck. I didn't notice that. Yeah. It's not far off to be fair. Yeah. It was like, it's crazy though because I've been to like events and stuff like that, like through like being with Adidas say, and then I met like an Adidas boxer and the boxer's
Starting point is 00:51:17 like, what do you do for your neck? Because like that's a big thing in boxing, having a strong neck. Yeah. I'm like, mate, you wouldn't believe, I don't do just right. It's just from riding BMX and spinning all the time. And like, when you land, we call it like, you land hard, you get like fish head where your head will bob down. So it's just all this like rotation you're doing with your head. Yeah. Any concerns when you went in there? Was anyone like, Hey, dude, you shouldn't't do that you should be doing like Pilates or just like whole static holds or was there any concern yeah like just yeah it was like it was like the typical you're gonna get
Starting point is 00:51:54 injured I shouldn't be doing you shouldn't be doing CrossFit like so injury-prone so injury-prone doing that stuff like the swinging on the bar and all that, like straight away. Even like, right, there was even like skepticism from some people, like British Cycling, the organization, not me, because it's like, we don't know if that's, you know, you should just get on a Watt bike. It's like the typical training for cycling. Right. There was definitely like, people were skeptical at first because of, I guess like the, what would you say? The reputation that CrossFit has from people who don't do it.
Starting point is 00:52:34 Right. You know, like, but because I like fell in love with it straight away, enjoyed it so much, I was like, now this is sick. I used to give my mate like shit for the butterfly pull-ups and he told me He was like wait till you try them Tell me how dumb though after you after you can link ten together. Yeah, and I started doing and I'm like this is sick Hey, are you humble enough?
Starting point is 00:52:58 Do you I mean I know it's it's hard at 23, but like like I'm sure you're like fuck I wonder how much I can deadlift or Hey, I wonder how much I can snatch. Do you know that? Do you mitigate your risks knowing? Do you do you know why you're doing CrossFit? I sometimes forget, like, do you have to tell yourself, Okay, look, I'm not trying to become a professional CrossFitter? Because obviously, you're an overachiever. And it's probably really hard for you not to do anything at 100%. Are you able to be like, Okay, I don't need to like Tyson Bajan, the quarterback from the Chicago Bears, he said he did a thousand burpee. No, he said he did a mile burpee broad jumps. I'm like, no Tyson, don't. But he's like, no, I had to do it. I'm like, are you fucking
Starting point is 00:53:37 nuts dude? I feel like I'm definitely still competitive in the gym. 100%. I've been lying, I said I wasn't. I just know what risks are worth taking, you know what I mean? Hoping in a certain, and I feel like as well, I look after my body more than probably some people do. I'll actually make sure I'm warm. I'll actually make sure I cool down. I'm doing certain things. If I'm doing a metcon and I've got pull-ups,
Starting point is 00:54:02 I wanna make sure my shoulders are ready to go. I I wouldn't go in and, and hit a one arm or I'm deadlift cold or something like that. But as well as that, like I'm not, I have like training that I do, which is specific CrossFit movements, that's a good stimulus for my sport. But then I also go in and hop in a class or hop in with a friend from the gym Who's on his own program and and hit workouts with them because I enjoy crossfares a hobby now as well. Yeah You got anyone else to go with you from your family? I saw you have a brother and a sister you got them to go yet I've been trying to get my mom to do one in Newcastle if I lived in Newcastle I would drag all them in there I would have a kids like because I'm not living up there anymore it's a bit harder but like my mom she goes to the
Starting point is 00:54:48 gym like I've been trying to tell her to hop in a CrossFit class but like it's always it's always hard I think you know to do the first one yeah you go in there on your own I think if I was there to do one with her it would be easier but yeah like I definitely an advocate for them to do that. So your mom does go to the gym. Yes, she was Jimmy Oh, okay. That's good. It's like a like blue religion. Yeah, that's good. That's good. As long as you're getting in the gym shit That's awesome. Yeah So she so she was a good role model. Um, you're you're the oldest brother all this year. Well, it's good. Okay, so This brother so I've got an older sister. He's five. Oh
Starting point is 00:55:26 So there's four of you all of us Okay, so so you do so how quickly after your last day of attempting? The triple flare do you before you go to the gym? I Actually think I might have been in the gym the day after. Oh shit, all beat up and shit and you walked in. But I would have just went in there and hit a class or just a fun one. Because like I was saying, CrossFit became a hobby, like an outlet.
Starting point is 00:55:58 As well as training for my sport, that is, I don't I don't know you have crossfitters and their their hobby outside of the sport might be like going and playing squash or something right and for me it was like outside of BMX my hobby is going and doing crossfit like right I was probably in there just doing some random sweaty metcon just to to enjoy doing that so maybe I've got the sequencing, the story right. Had you had done a little bit of CrossFit before you made your first attempt? No, no, no, no. Okay. So that's what I mean.
Starting point is 00:56:32 After your first attempt, how long before you found a CrossFit gym? I think like within the week, like I think, you know, I had a few days off and everything, let the body, and then like I said, I just Googled CrossFit gyms near me and then went in and did that taster class probably like the weekend after and hopped in that first team ward. But it was like, yeah, within the week. And then you started noticing your riding was different also pretty quickly? Yes.
Starting point is 00:56:57 I was just so much more powerful. Like, I know I was lighter, like I felt like I was lighter, better mobility. I even felt like I was recovering better. My energy levels were higher from not just like, so we ride, the park opens like 12, so it's like sitting in the house til 12. I went riding 12 til maybe four, sitting in the house. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:57:19 So it was like, I wasn't doing much in the day. And so adding the training in was actually good for my energy levels, if anything. Hey, don't they? You don't have a key to the park? No. So we can get in when it's closed now. But because like we're so used to that schedule of going in when it opens at 12, even so Monday to Thursday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, it's closed. But we still just go to the park for 12 because it's just like ingrained in routine at this point. Right, right.
Starting point is 00:57:50 Okay. So then you train for those six months and at some point, you know, they call you and they say, hey, when do you want to do it? And you're like, January. They say, okay. Do you go back to the same place? Same place. Yeah, same place. Slightly tweak the setup from what we learned the first time Yeah, did that did that trip you out?
Starting point is 00:58:09 Where was part of you hesitant because I saw that they had to they built you a new ramp with some slightly different angles Yeah, that make you nervous where you like, oh god. Now, here's another variable. I got to deal with I was like nervous, but at the same time I was like We were able to do that from what we learned the first time so like at the first time I was like bigger ramp more speed more height easier And then I actually wasn't the case like I needed a smaller ramp that was steeper So it so going up the ramp wasn't taking as much of my speed and and all those small changes We made it took a minute to get used to And I was like kind of hesitant at first as to whether
Starting point is 00:58:45 I'd made the right decisions. But then if you watch the video you'll see like, so we rode this ramp the first two days and on the third day we broke for lunch and I genuinely think it was because I was getting tired. I was like, oh, can we just add like, I think I added maybe half a foot or a foot to the ramp to take off. It's like, can we just add a foot? I think it was genuine just fatigue through the day that I was pulling a bit less. So I'll spend a bit slower
Starting point is 00:59:08 So I needed a bit more height And like adding that uh extra foot Is probably what made the difference Wow Let me ask you this you finished the first attempt on you you show up to the first attempt Believing you can do it, you leave with failure. When you show up the second time six months later to set the world record on this jump to be the first person to do it. Do you think what's your mindset? Is it
Starting point is 00:59:35 like I'm a failure? Or is it like, do you can you are you able to get back into the mindset of like, Hey, I can fucking do this. The first I think the first time I went in, because I underestimated so much, the second time I kind of went in like, almost like, complete different person. I was like, right, I learned the first time a lot. I changed a lot since then. Okay, okay.
Starting point is 00:59:58 I kind of went into it as like, this is Kieran V2. Okay. Different mindset. Like, I, I, I. You rebuilt yourself and you rebuilt the ramp. Yeah. Yeah. It was complete. It was like, right. I'm using everything I've learned this first time trying it to make it happen this time. I know it was nice because I know what I'm getting myself into. First time was good and blind. So the second time I was like, right,
Starting point is 01:00:20 I know this is going to be tough mentally, physically, but now I know that it's like, all right, that takes a little bit off the edge you know I mean. Normally when you do a trick could it let's say let's say you're a little kid right and you want to learn a trick at the park there's no foam pits let's say you want to do your first tail whip right ever I don't know that's pretty hard but how long would it take how long would you have to practice the tail whip for you get it? Could it take you a month? Two months? Yeah, yeah. Tail whip is one of the hardest tricks to learn. Like in that, when it comes to like the entry level tricks, tail whip is one of the toughest ones to figure out because the first trick you learn where you're getting off the bike, moving the bike
Starting point is 01:01:01 around and get back on. And it's, it's probably the first trick that takes a lot of commitment, which is scary. And so it could, you know, some people could take them a week, could take you a month, could take you two months if you're struggling to figure out or commit to the trick. And like, but it literally depends. Cause I see some kids pick things up so quick. Cause as a kid, you've got way less fear.
Starting point is 01:01:23 Right. So like I was saying earlier about body position could be completely wrong for the trick. But if you're committed enough, you can get yourself back on the bike. No matter, like that's what I was like as a kid, it was like, my technique was terrible, but I was just so committed to getting back on the bike that it worked somehow. Yeah. So with that lack of fear as a kid, you pick things up quick. Yeah, I mean it so with that lack of fear as a kid you pick things up quick Okay, so you're so you you you try for six days It's not that's also not foreign to you you you've had a life of doing hard tricks So there's things you practice for months before you get them. Yeah. Yes, so you get back there in day one
Starting point is 01:02:01 You ride the ramp and how many actual attempts do you make? I? Think I was like averaging like four or five attempts today Okay, it was it was like I would land and the crash would be heavy, but my adrenaline would be so high I would literally sprint back to the top of the rolling. Oh, yeah I would see you do that crash and then run with your bike I was like I'd be like my adrenaline so high I need to get back up there and get back in as quick as I can. Because once the adrenaline plummeted, I then had to go through this whole mental process again of getting ready to go. So like, yeah, I would run back up as quick as I could and use that like the butterflies that I had. And it was once that went after like four
Starting point is 01:02:39 or five attempts, some days you could pull it back, you know, you have a break, you can get back into that mindset again. And other days it was like, your battery was gone. You know, your body was like, no, we're done for the day. And you just couldn't get back there. Dude, that's another thing I don't think the viewers understand at all. Like I can't really, I can't really understand it. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 01:03:02 It's like, it's like this, it's like the fatigue thing. Like you were talking about when you're at the Olympics and it's like, dude, you have to do all these tricks while you're fucking pedaling the bike as fast as you can for a minute. That I guess that's the adrenaline thing too. Like no one at home can see. No one at home can say like the difference that makes as well. Like adrenaline is an amazing thing.
Starting point is 01:03:23 Like nothing short, you know what I mean? Like you'll see it like, most of the competitions nothing short, you know what I mean? Like you'll see it like in the competitions, people PR, you know, that's adrenaline, that's the crowd. And it's just the same with us. Like the difference the adrenaline can make to whether you do or don't do something, 55 seconds into a run, it's huge. It's do or die. It's pure fight of the fight and flight part, right? It's like, all right, there's no option. Yeah, and like I was saying earlier, you have these full conversations in your head
Starting point is 01:03:51 that literally span over the course of a second. Yeah. You debate whether or not you're doing things over the course of a second. And then it's like, you're fighting yourself because you're telling yourself, that little voice comes in, it's like you're tired like you probably I don't think you should do that trick
Starting point is 01:04:08 Like I don't think you got the energy for it and then at the same time got the other Voice that you're saying like I can need to do this trick whether I'm tired or not Like I need to finish strong and yeah, like all this happens within a second And then so at after day one, are you feeling confident about day two? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like the first time I went in, like, because the first time I went, it was completely new.
Starting point is 01:04:32 It took a couple of days just to have it perfected and the foam fit. So after day one, I've already tried it on wood. I'm like, I'm four days ahead of schedule from the last time I was here. Okay. And I knew I had two more days and I was like, all right, well, I'd gotten even closer this time and I've got two more days.
Starting point is 01:04:49 I don't feel as beat up because I'm only one day in. So tomorrow I'm not going to feel as bad as I did six days in the first time, whatever it was. And so I felt like way, way better. So the narrative is good in your head. Yeah. And I was just way more positive as well. Like I remember like I knew how it felt last time to just do well on the negatives of the day.
Starting point is 01:05:09 So I was like this time I'm just going to be positive about it. Like today went well. I did this. This went well. I figured this bit out. I got close. You know, I mean like try to be in a different mindset for the first time. And then so then day two you don't get it. What day did you finally get it on? Third day. So third day right at the end of the day. And, and, and was that, was that third day going to be the last day? That was the last day. And I literally pulled it like 8 30 PM or something.
Starting point is 01:05:36 Like it was like everyone, everyone thought it was done. I thought it was done. And I was like, could see everyone's like, because they've been screaming for me the last three days, like I needed that for the adrenaline. I needed to get so pumped up. I could see everyone's like enthusiasm as I was starting to go. I felt like when I was up there, like I can't hear anything, but I felt like there was whispers down there of like, I was not going to do it again. Like this is it.
Starting point is 01:06:08 Yeah. Hey dude, they probably were saying that. I'm up on this massive roll and just looking down, can't hear anything they're saying of them on the show. And I was thinking they're all down there thinking that this is it. And I was like, the nuts started to get us like worked up. And that's what made us be like, right. This one. Cause I was so just angry that I couldn't like bring myself up to do it. I was like, all right, well, this one I'm going to go 110% and I'm going to do it. Or when I crashed, it's going to be a crash where no one expects me to
Starting point is 01:06:38 get back up here and try again. You just, that's a, that's like, you really sent it. Yeah. Yeah. That was it. It was like, I'm going to, when they say send it, you really sent it. Yeah, yeah that was it. It was like I'm gonna... When they say send it, you actually sent it. Oh I sent it. That's why I roared like that at the end because I was like...
Starting point is 01:06:53 It was going very very well or very very badly. Did anyone tell you afterwards? Hey dude, I fucking owe you an apology. I was down here thinking fuck Oh, yeah Everyone everyone said like we thought you're done I can't believe you managed to get yourself back in that mindset then like I just remember like Everyone I think the word that was going on most was like relieved. Everyone was like so relieved for it Looks right. Well tell me I look ill Like I was so nervous and you did kind of look like you look like a ghost you were losing Yeah, yeah, that's weird to say to a guy from England. He's losing his color. You were really losing
Starting point is 01:07:30 Yeah, I was in the trenches like and then all the color just rushed back in apparently like Yeah, I didn't realize that after someone said like that. I hadn't seen a smile for like three days and I was like Hadn't you know even wrong? I hadn't realized but smile for like three days. And I was like, hadn't, you know, even wrong. I hadn't realized, but I was like, I was just so mentally like turned on constantly. Like it was so fatiguing. It's, it's, I mean, it's, it's like, it's so crazy. It's like a picture, you know, it's like,
Starting point is 01:08:00 the story couldn't have been any better, right? It's almost like now in hindsight, it's perfect the way it happened, right? Like you can't you're glad you had the failure You had you had the six months of like rebuild Kieran the bionic man, then you come back and do it. Yeah, it's wild um, and and I and I love what you're saying about Like you knew that that margin that you were avoiding Was gonna cost you possibly a really serious injury but it was the only place you hadn't explored and you had to go there. Yeah
Starting point is 01:08:29 like it's because of that I found CrossFit so it's like and because of CrossFit that I did my best year competing and then my best year competing I got a Bruce Ligland the following year I won three continental championship like it was all like, it's crazy. The butterfly effect of that trick, crazy. Oh, that just kind of, that was the beginning of just this insane moment. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:08:54 Yeah, like, cause finding CrossFit and like being able to do more than other people in these competition runs, because I was fair, is played a huge part in like having my best year comping having qualified for the games you know me like for the Olympic game like all of this started because of that one split second decision and that trigger word of like marginal games I need to go to the gym I need like it's mental to look back hey if you has anyone done that trick since you've done it now, no one no one wants to fuck with that thing
Starting point is 01:09:32 They're like like don't want to do all that to be the second person to do it right right In the chance of injury doing new tricks is it and like you said, as you get further and for each loop you do, the margin of error just gets smaller and smaller. Genuinely insane that I managed to leave without a big injury. Insane. When I look back, I'm like, I don't know how I was getting those. The crashes are epic. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:02 My body was beat up, but it was like to get away and be healthy enough to be like I was walking into a gym a few days later. Insane. Like so, so lucky. Kieran, so in this interview I saw, you're at the Olympics and you did a run and you get two runs? Yeah, two runs. And your run was good enough to get you on the podium and
Starting point is 01:10:27 You had one run left and you basically said, okay, I'm just gonna once again like the triple flair like I'm just gonna send it I'm gonna like push it to the margins of error and because now like like do I Basically was it like you were gonna kick yourself if you didn, you would rather have a bronze and know you tried your hardest. 100%. Like even still when I got home from the games was kicking myself for the small mistakes I made in that run. Like not finishing on the trick I was meant to finish on.
Starting point is 01:10:58 And it was like so easy to do that afterwards. So easy. And I know for a fact, like I left everything on that course that day. In that, in that moment, on that day, that was everything that I had in that, in that moment. There was things that I wanted to do and mistakes that I made. And you know, maybe if I went back and I tried to put those tricks in that I didn't do, it might have paid, it might have worked and it might have been gold but it's like it would be like finishing frowned and being like I can't believe I stood around for five seconds
Starting point is 01:11:33 to calm my breath why don't I just pick the bar up oh should do and that's what it's like it's like oh I can't believe I didn't do that front flip at the end but in the moment when your legs are on fire you can't catch your breath. All I was thinking in those split seconds is like, this might be enough. Do I want to crash? Because realistically I might have tried that trick and I might have crashed. Would I have then been more annoyed and thinking I had enough for silver? You have all these conversations in split seconds. So I went out for that second run and like that was everything I had in that moment. Do you, do you have two routines?
Starting point is 01:12:12 Do you have a first routine and a second routine or is it the same routine twice? Usually I would do like what we call like a safer routine first. So get a score on the board, do like 90% and then the second routine, put it all out there with the Olympics it was like I had one run planned and I had two attempts at executing it. Oh no shit. Yeah I was there to like to get a medal like I would have been so annoyed if I'd done a safe run in the first run, crashed the second run and ended up in fourth. I would have kicked myself. Did you perform the routine better the second time?
Starting point is 01:12:53 Yeah. Yeah. So I added a lot of tricks in the second time. And, you know, like, honestly, like down there waiting for my score, I think a lot of us thought I had it, had gold. It just wasn't meant to be that day. And it was a close competition., like I had a lot in but There's small mistakes that I still made just just cost us in the end In the Olympics or you you Does the whole British team go there together like all the different disciplines? Jump on one giant plane and go or yes, so we Like all the disciplines, you know, competing at a similar time.
Starting point is 01:13:26 So like when we, we got the train out there to France and like we're on the train with people from all different cycling disciplines. You got any other sports that compete, boxers, you know what I mean? Any sports that compete at a similar time. So yeah, like when you travel out there, it's like hundreds of people is all in Team Jumika.
Starting point is 01:13:44 It's quite, quite a mad experience. And then you get there and then you just is it I picture it. Do they just take you into this place that's just cordoned off and it's just dormitories galore and they're like, yeah, yeah, so like number 652 and you go in there, you go to the village, you get like an apartment each. You might usually so I was meant to share with I think a swimmer or a diver or something like this. And then I ended up having the room to myself Which was like a score that doesn't really happen in the other big village
Starting point is 01:14:09 So I had a room to myself the whole time was the games just say what what happened to the dude Did he bail out? I don't know if you like Maybe a room came up with with someone in his team in in his sport or something But yeah, I got there like there's a name on on the bed next to me and no one ever turned up. And how long were you in the Olympic village? We were there, I think eight days. Okay. So, and how many days you compete?
Starting point is 01:14:36 Two, two days. Yeah. So we have that. We meant to have like three days of practice. Oh, maybe, I think it may be in four days of practice. Two days got rained out and so they doubled the practice time on the last two days. And then obviously you get out there a little bit early,
Starting point is 01:14:53 get settled in, like you want to be fully recovered and stuff like that. And then you do your event and then after you win the silver, how long are you still there? So the next day, so a bit like when you win a medal, like you shipped off to media, like you're doing media back to back to back to back to back straight after like, and then day after the first September, I was like, I had the opportunity to go and watch some other sports or like I had a lot of media booked in and then we did like the champions walk where you walk down towards the hotel with your medal and
Starting point is 01:15:28 everything and then I was meant to get the train back the morning after that at 9am. Missed my train back accidentally and ended up going out and celebrating and so I ended up getting a bit of a later train back but yeah you ship like straight out like I was lucky to have like a day because I think there's some sports you compete in the mall in the morning. You're out the next morning Hey when you miss your train what happens you call someone at the Olympics or like a hey, I miss my train Like you have a point of contact. Yeah, it's like fuck you kid. You're on your own so I woke up like So one of the lads I trained with Declan, he got bronze at Tokyo Olympics
Starting point is 01:16:04 he came out there to do some commenting and media and stuff like that and like we ended up going out and My phone was dead so I couldn't get back to the Olympic Village So he's like come back to my room. It's like God knows what time in the morning It's like come back to my room charge your phone case off and you were back to the village So yeah, sweet fell asleep in his room wake up in the morning to him waking me up He's like what time you train? I was like nine. He's like He's like it's 930 I was like, ah
Starting point is 01:16:33 So I charge my phone Sadly put on charge where I went into his room and now my phone goes crazy miss calls from like our shop we're on a team GB loads of the like the team what I'm going to be going home with eventually bring them around my manager first actually because I had those immediate boot that morning before I went home which I obviously missed and I'm thinking always going to be pissed and he answers the phone and as soon as I tell him he just stopped laughing is that all that's sick I'm so glad you got to go out and celebrate don't even worry about it like we'll get awesome we'll get someone to go out and celebrate. Don't even worry about it. Like, we'll get someone to go to your room, pack your bags for you and we'll meet you. And I might sweet, I was
Starting point is 01:17:09 like, so I ring our chat room team, GB, Sarah and exact same response. Like she just starts laughing. I'm just glad you're okay. Like you were down as, cause you bought an app that you use all, all, uh, athletes, the Olympics called Vismo tracks you in case anything happens because my phone was off. They couldn't track me. So I was down as like, like AWOL or like MIA or whatever. And we're just glad you're okay. We'll be trying to track you down. We'll get you on the next train. Don't even worry about it. There's someone on their way to pick you up, come back, pack your bags, get you on the next train. And like they saw the funny side of it. And then when I walked into the team GB building, there's like a reception and everything. were laughing and clapping like everyone everyone was like I think
Starting point is 01:17:51 appreciated the fact, you know, I got to go out and celebrate like God yeah, what a relief. It was a good story. What really hey was any part of you sad you got to silver medal Yeah, I was when I thought I was definitely like self-critical when I got home. Isn't that a trip? You went to the Olympics and it's like, fucking A, I'm amazing. That should be enough and then you get the silver. Yeah. Yeah, like when I got home, I was like beat myself up for a few days and then I was like, like I had like our coach text me was like six months ago, I told you, you got silver,
Starting point is 01:18:24 you'd have been jumping up and down. Like the depth in the field is like, anyone could have meddled, anyone who was at the games, like seriously, everyone had trained specifically for this event, you don't know what tricks people are gonna debut there for the first time. And he was like, just think about if I told you that six months ago, just because of how it went down
Starting point is 01:18:43 and how you got it, don't let that take away from it. Eventually I started to realize he was right and I was like, yeah, got to be proud of what I did achieve. It would have almost been easier if you would have gotten seventh. Yeah, yeah. You know what I mean? You tasted it. You tasted it.
Starting point is 01:18:59 Yeah. Like some gold got on you. People always say the worst like fourth and second. Yeah. Oh. To step on the podium. Second, you always got the four in your head up. I was this close to winning.
Starting point is 01:19:11 So it's like, it's like bittersweet until like I settled down and realized like how I would have thought about it. Had it been, you know, had I been in sixth place and then in my second run, I bumped up to second. Yeah. It would had been exciting. So yeah, like still so proud of that. I mean, it's been like the last four years, all of everything has
Starting point is 01:19:34 revolved around getting to the Olympics. So that was the goal. So getting there and being an Olympian and then getting a medal. Yeah. I used to know the cake. You, after, after doing the triple flare, you made the first attempt, then you made the second attempt, and on your very last run, on the last day, you hadn't done it. And I'm putting words in your mouth, but you had this realization that no matter how many people are there, you're all alone. You're at the top, you can't hear them, you're fucking adrenaline...
Starting point is 01:20:03 Like, there's this, like, either I'm gonna do it or I'm not gonna do it. Right. Yeah, like that was it. Like a really lonely experience. Right. Yeah, and they were down there like people lost their voice shouting to help. Right. And it was like, but you yourself know, it's like only I can do this. Yeah. That's the hard thing of like, like it's being down there and filming or anything like that.
Starting point is 01:20:24 Like that's a sick experience in itself for them. Right. It's watch, you know, like, I've been looking down there and I'd be thinking, it was almost frustrating. I'm like, I can't believe you're all down there and you just get to chair me. I like, I'd love to be the guy watching the guy do this. Like, and that's almost like that takes a toll on you because you're almost frustrated them you know me you're like oh he's so lucky you're down there and you you're up there you hear someone crack a red bull 30 feet away you're like what the fuck you're heading in to do absolutely tear yourself up on a workout and someone else pats you on the back like yeah enjoy yeah you, they're like telling me,
Starting point is 01:21:05 like, oh, you've got this, you're like shouting and everything and like, it was getting me so pumped up, like them shouting and everything. And then you've also got that in the back of your head, like, it's easy for you to say it, tell me I've got it. Cause you're the one who's got to go down there and send it like, yeah. Was it like, was that similar experience
Starting point is 01:21:23 in your second run at the Olympics? What was that like? You're on your bike and you're waiting for the clock to tell you to go. What was that like? Just like the seconds before? It was the strangest feeling I've ever competed. I was excited. Rarely am I at a competition and I'm like, the nerves usually outweigh the excitement.
Starting point is 01:21:43 I feel like at the games and I was just so excited. I was like, the nerves usually outweigh the excitement. I feel like at the games and I was so excited. I waited for this and as well it was like, I was proud of what I did to get ready. My preparation, I knew I did everything I could. Absolutely everything. It never worked so hard. And so I was at the top and I was like, well now I just get to show everyone all the hard work I've put in. And whatever happens, I'm proud because the first dream that I had was to get to the Olympics and be an Olympian. So it's like, well, now I get to this, no matter what, I leave here, I've been to the Olympics. So it was strange to have that excitement. And as well, it was crazy, like my family just happened to book seats. So you just get randomly allocated, allocated seats when you book tickets
Starting point is 01:22:27 and that seats happen to be in the stands right by where I started. So just as all the like a crowd goes quiet and they call my name and everything. And I'm doing my processes before I drop in. I can hear all my family shouting. Oh, that's awesome. Best feet like and like I had to tell them after I was like, I wasn't like, you know, when you guys, I just have to stay in the zone. Cause like I've got my head down and I'm like, don't even look. Like don't, if I look at them, that like tiny little bit of motion, you know, the effect
Starting point is 01:22:54 that can have. So I'm like, I can hear them. This is amazing that they're right there on that fence. Like, like just don't look. God, it must've been insane for your mom and dad Every time your wheels leave the ground. I would fucking love to see a heart rate monitor on your mom My dad will tell my mom off like because she'll be watching like closed hands or she'll be like looking away She'll be like, oh just tell us how he's doing. Uh, she gets she probably feels the nerves as much as I do like
Starting point is 01:23:24 Yeah, she's been there through everything. She's had the calls when it's been not going well. She's had the ups with me. She's had the downs. She almost knows as well. I think part of the nerves for her is she knows if it goes bad, she's going to be the one to console me when and like so she's literally on the journey. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hey, dude, it's like that. Um, you know, my kids are just young, but when I take them to go fight or do whatever they do, it's fucking crazy. It's like I'm out there. It's fucking I'm like just pouring sweat. It's like they're living through you.
Starting point is 01:24:02 Your parents are living through you. It's so weird. Yeah. What do you think? Would you say you're obsessive? You don't seem to have any, like, as I watch you on the, as I talk to you, I don't see any, like, autism or any weird shit, like, that, like, a champion's supposed to have. Like, you don't have any, like, tics or like, you don't seem like... Go ahead. I know what you mean.
Starting point is 01:24:22 Like, most, like, a lot of people at the top of the sport are like... Especially your field. Like, the precision... I know you mean that like a lot of people at the top of the sport are like... Especially your field. Like the precision is so... like you meet like these world-class skateboarders and you think they're gonna be cool dudes and you're like no you're just a fucking dork because and that's why you're so good. You're just a fucking dork. Which is cool but you're always kind of surprised.
Starting point is 01:24:41 You're like man you're like a rocket scientist on a skateboard. Yeah. I feel like I'm not like, I'm not, I'm not smart enough to be like a doctor. I think I literally like, I got, But your attention to detail is, is, is, is, Yeah. I feel like I'm a perfectionist in certain things. Like when it comes to like anything with like riding and content, I'm like so switched on. Like my parents used to always say like I would never put effort in anything until I was on my bike and that's how it is like still like now. If I'm doing something that revolves around riding, so it's something to do with my riding career, whether it's in the gym, on the bike or creating content or filming or anything like that, I riding so it's something to do with my riding career whether it's in the gym on the bike or creating content or filming or anything like that
Starting point is 01:25:26 I'm so on it like that's get so much attention and like I'm so switched on and anything outside of that I'm like I'm not the the OCD The switched on or like anything it's just with like riding What do you mean content you mean like you're obsessed with like the right camera angle from the bike or the light Yeah, what do you mean? I'm the worst like if I like film a clip for it for Instagram or somewhere like and I'm getting someone to film it Like it's almost like a nine. Starting point is 01:26:45 consistent on social media like Just just getting ready for the Olympics just took such a toll on that side Hey, are you young enough to go? I don't what's the life expectancy of a rider? Are you young enough to go to the Olympics again again? Yeah. Yeah, so like the oldest Olympian I think in Paris was Logan Martin who won the games in Tokyo. He's, I want to say 30, but then there was a silver medalist in Tokyo who was 34. Wow.
Starting point is 01:27:16 So like that's, I would say around 30 is like most people's span, but because of BMX now like the riders are acting more like athletes look after themselves better the longevity it will get it'll get longer but I still can't see like I'd say like 35 it might get pushed to like being competitive but then it just it just depends like you just don't know hey are there any tricks you've lost that just older guys can't do? So like, let me give you an example. Like, if you have a little, like my kid,
Starting point is 01:27:50 all my kids can sit down, squat, and put their butt on the ground and stand up. But my oldest is nine and it's getting harder and harder, right, because his body's growing, right? Are there things that you did as a kid that like, you're like, yeah, no adult does that trick. It's just too easy. Yeah, just, just. You lose it dumb stuff you can't do any of the dumb stuff anyway awesome great for a video
Starting point is 01:28:14 but like the risk to reward is not worth it at all you know like i'll see clips like an old clip like like six years ago today and i'm'm like, why on earth did like, because at the time I was just like, I wanna get a good clip. Like I used to be old, when I wasn't competing and stuff and I was younger, it's like, right, I wanna get a sick video for Instagram. Right.
Starting point is 01:28:36 And like, we always joke about it. Like the lads that I ride with, like you would just send the craziest shit that I had like no reward. And it's like, you just kind of realize the risks when you get older and you're like, why on earth I do that? Like stuff like that when you look back, like having no second thoughts when you're a bit younger.
Starting point is 01:28:57 Right. I saw on your Instagram, I went through the whole Instagram, I only saw one injury, I saw a broken wrist. Have you broken a lot of bones? So broken wrist broken like a bunch of my fingers tall ligaments both ATFL and PTFL my left ankle Also broke my left ankle and metatarsal when I was younger and then done the ligaments in my right angle as well Just one side
Starting point is 01:29:23 Legaments in my right angle as well. Just one side It when you broke your wrist did you keep riding you say I think you said your wrist that was a six month heel Yeah, I think the wrist was the Longest one, but I think again it was like I rushed back in I think like I Think it was probably meant to be that when I put that post on Instagram I'm sure I was back writing within like four weeks. Like, okay, like it is not at all what you should do. I would never promote it, but I was just like, like I could not not ride because it was my only energy outlet. Like the only thing I was doing, it was killer when I wasn't on the bike. So I would always rush back. And I think like in our sport as well,
Starting point is 01:30:06 maybe not as much now but like I'd say the bigger problem is people coming back too early from injury than being scared to get back on the bike. Right, interesting, interesting. Do you have a girlfriend? I do yeah. And how long have you had her? We've been together for six years. And is that so, oh man, so since you've been a kid, since you just got your driver's license. Yeah, it's like I literally ended up living with her and her parents because they live closer to the skate park. Wow.
Starting point is 01:30:40 The park that I was riding, so I was at the park that often. I would end up like being at her house and then I got to the point where I was riding so I was at the park that often I would end up like being a house and then I got to the point where I was like oh all my stuff now resides in your bedroom so I guess I live here because it was close to the skate park. I know I feel like the UK kind of has a different culture around that like I feel like maybe like you guys are I don't know more more familiar with your countrymen like you guys are closer together and those things are kind of more accepted like maybe like how like that shit probably wouldn't be cool although we do all sorts of stupid shit in California so is she able to
Starting point is 01:31:20 enjoy like I'm trying to remember what it's like being 17 or 18 or 19 or 20 like is she able to enjoy Your success like I'm everyone's had the girlfriend that's like jealous or why don't she spend more time with me or just like the demands that young people put on relationships and I think like One of the best balls while it's like when we like when we first got together I was working full-time. I was trying to become a professional BMX rider. She was always super supportive and helping me. You were a carpenter for three and a half years, right?
Starting point is 01:31:50 Carpenter during the day and then BMX rider at night. Yeah. She was trying so hard. She helped so much. Then at that time, I was going and traveling a lot to compete, mainly just to get my name out there and get experience. I wasn't getting great results. You know, but like, I was going to these events and like she was coming
Starting point is 01:32:10 everywhere with me pretty much like, trap we like been to so many different countries for events and like they're almost like little holidays, you know, like, and so she got to like reap the rewards of that, like getting loads of these loads of holidays. And then like, she was, you know, when I was gonna move to Colby, I always thought I'd move here on my own and she would stay up in Newcastle
Starting point is 01:32:30 and it'd be a long distance thing. And soon as I said, I want to move down here, she was like, I'll move. She moved down here with us. Like she does CrossFit now. She loves it. Oh, that's awesome. Yeah, she took a minute to get her into it.
Starting point is 01:32:41 Like, I was probably training, like doing it for like a year and a half, maybe ish before she finally came and dropped. She was like, you know what CrossFit gyms are like, like community and everything, we hang out outside and she was hanging out with all this friendship group, but wouldn't go into a class. And then we finally get her to go to a class
Starting point is 01:32:59 and then she loves it. Like I'll be away, like I was away at the Olympics and she's like texting me like, oh, I PB'd my three RM front squat today I really wish you first joined It was like so frustrating because she was getting new begins to stop PB every week and I'm like, oh my god She loves it now. Oh, that's cool. You're at the fucking Olympics and she's telling you about her personal best at the gym That's a true crossfitter for you. Wow
Starting point is 01:33:29 Wow, well good on you, uh, that seems I always I always wonder because my relationships I don't know. It just seemed like there was always so much drama when you're young And I and that but but then again, I never did anything in my life to excel like you did. So Yeah, I'm sure I also probably like do a ride in with coming in from riding in the gym and just having absolutely depleted myself. Right. And then leaving all my riding gear and stuff everywhere. I mean, like, I'm sure I'm quite the nightmare to be around sometimes as well, to be fair. Right.
Starting point is 01:34:03 But if you want to be that, that's kind of of the thing and maybe she's cracked the code on it if you want to be around people who are doing great shit they're not going to have it's going to be different it's not going to be a team relationship oh yeah 100 like because you it's like i said earlier you're with it for the ups and the downs right you can't just chime in when it's going well. You know what I mean? So yeah, she's been there for you, through both ends of the scale. Or it's like, hey, my best friend's getting married. Can we go? No, I have to go ride. My sister's getting married.
Starting point is 01:34:34 Can I go? No, I got the European national championships. And not only does the person have to accept that, but they have to be happy for you. Like your coaches were at the Olympic Village. Like when you missed your, that's who you wanna be around. When you miss your train, you want your support team to be like happy for you. Like your coaches were at the Olympic Village. Like when you missed your, that's who you wanna be around. When you miss your train, you want your support team to be like, dude, don't worry, it's cool.
Starting point is 01:34:50 Yeah, yeah, mate, like I was speaking, so I couldn't remember the last time I went on a flight without a bike bag for an event. So for the last like two years, I've been like after the Olympics, we're gonna go on this big holiday, like all this work is towards the Olympics. No matter what happens, like I'm going to let my hair down, I can't wait. And then the Olympics finishes and then we're talking about this holiday that we're going on. And I'm like,
Starting point is 01:35:13 right, I can squeeze in four days somewhere in Europe. She's like, I thought you wanted to go to Mexico for like two weeks. And I'm like, yeah Schedules actually but crazy now. Let's do a long weekend somewhere That was like the big holiday that that was promised Where do you guys go in Europe? Like if you have if you have four days, where's is there a place to go? So we went Greece. Okay, and like and it's warm and there's a beach and you chose That's all I wanted like good weather beach good food and like Greece for us is like three hours like Kieran um Are you more like your mom or your dad you think
Starting point is 01:35:58 Dad yeah That's the hardest working person ever met like Wow, and is that and that's the hardest working person ever met. Like, wow. And is that, and that's where you get it? I think, I think so. Like we weren't, weren't spoiled at all. Like we were far from spoiled as kids. Like, and like, I'm glad that we brought up like that, like our parents were young
Starting point is 01:36:18 parents, we weren't, we're far from well off. So it was like, and my dad always like would just say like little things to us that would stick, you know, I mean, like just talk about like you get nothing for nothing. Like, like, if in Geordie, like where I'm from the slang is like you get now for now. He'd always say that that was like, almost in mantra, like, always say, you know, like, like, and it just little things that you'd always say with and I've watched like like my mom would always moan Not like a bad way about like my dad always being out of the house, you know He's at work and then he's meant to be coming home and instead of coming home
Starting point is 01:36:54 He's went off to do something else to like try and get money or whatever like if I was if he was driving me up to Scotland for a competition on the weekend that meant he had to Go and do a car boot sale or something to, you know what I mean? Like he always made sure like the family had what, like what we needed. Like I never went without him and he made, made it like that. Like I got my work ethic from him a hundred percent. So your dad, your dad was always hustling and clearly you respected the shit out of it. Oh yeah, like
Starting point is 01:37:29 he Like the cliché that sounds you don't mean he wanted us to have the upbringing that he didn't have you know I mean he wanted us if I wanted a new bike or I needed a new helmet like and that was that was the beauty of it as well like he could see straight away the passion I had with right and like and like he's the furthest thing from a soccer dad. Never be shouting at the skate park, go and do another trick. He wasn't like that, but he was just so supportive
Starting point is 01:37:55 because there was always that running joke of I never put effort or energy into anything. But once I was on my bike, it was like I was a different kid. I enjoyed the work. And he could see that and he was like he could see that he was that right he's so passionate about this riding thing I think go far in this I want to help them the best I can do you know how many dumb shit parents would be like there's no future in riding a bike it's just bad kids oh yeah you're just
Starting point is 01:38:20 drugs like stay the fuck away what are you doing and they would have like totally discouraged their kids yeah I've seen it like like you know you could easily like I stood go for a kick around you know like they football my friends as a kid it's like would have been easy for me like why don't you just you know join a side 18 why don't you do you know like like you've got career in this you know and at the time like you think what's when I first started riding BMX like the Olympics was never ever an idea in the BMX world. No one thought we'd ever get in the Olympics.
Starting point is 01:38:49 Like, like that wasn't even for me, like the dream in riding BMX was like traveling around America, go to Woodward, doing these competitions that I was watching all these guys do on YouTube. Like it wasn't about making a legitimate career. It was like, I just want to ride my bike every day. And then luckily enough, the sport has grown whilst I have. When, when you graduated from high school and you started your apprenticeship in carpentry and then you were riding at night, were there some lows there where you were like, what am I doing? Like just stay home and.
Starting point is 01:39:21 Yeah. A hundred percent. Like, it was just like I was burning the candle like both ends i would come home from from where i used to get home like 4 35 pm and then i would just go to sleep i would just nap and then girlfriend would finish work like six seven she would wake me up then i go to the skate park for bmx night and it was like this routine and it was just like it was just a routine i'm constantly pretty much complaining about me and tired because it was just like it was just routine of constantly pretty much complaining about me tired so just doing I was doing too much you know me but it was the only way it would work but it was like that also lit the
Starting point is 01:39:51 fire so that when I was at the park I made it count like every single day I rode every single day I rode I was like if I like one day that I don't put work in is another day I've got to stay working on site doing carbonary so every time I rode I was like tired or not I was Putting work in to try and get out of this job as quick as I could um Your can you hear that dinging? Okay, good all these text messages are coming in on my computer like fuck I hope you can't
Starting point is 01:40:24 Keep trying turn up. Okay good When you when you were doing that Did you know that that did you see a way out like did you think okay? I'm gonna become a professional carpenter. This is gonna become full-time or BMX and it's kind of like the two were on a race And you're like god, I hope BM like, God, I hope BMX wins. God, I hope BMX wins. It was like, well, cause the thing was that our parents were always like, you know, you need to fall back on. Do it. If you, this doesn't go big, my biggest supporters, but like when it got to that point where it was looking chances, you know what I mean? They were like, you know, we want you
Starting point is 01:40:58 to have something to fall back on. And I say now, like, if I stopped BMX tomorrow, there was no way I would fall back. I wouldn't be going and doing carpentry if I stop being next tomorrow, there is no way I would fall back I wouldn't be going and doing carpentry I qualify carpenter now that's not what people do if I need to go get a job like I Was not not for me. And like I think it's hard, right? It's hard to share. It's just hard work like and there's but if you ask the people when I was working on site like My head was rarely ever in it. Like I was just thinking like, I need a paycheck to pay for me to go to this competition. It's why I'm here.
Starting point is 01:41:29 Like, obviously I had to, to, to pick up the trade and do well enough to make sure I became qualified and stuff. And like, I had to put work into the people I was working with, but like, I was never of the, like idea of like, I'm going to become qualified in this and do this full time. Like I was always pretty much racing against the clock to of like, I'm gonna become qualified in this and do this full time. Like I was always pretty much racing against the clock to be like, the second I become qualified
Starting point is 01:41:51 and get my certificate, just to make sure that this three year apprenticeship wasn't for nothing, I wanna be able to step out and do BMX full time. And then who was your, what happened? What was like, oh shit, okay, I got $12 from this sponsor. That's enough to like drink water and eat rice. I was a, I shit, okay. I got $12 from this sponsor. That's enough. Like drink water and eat rice.
Starting point is 01:42:07 I was a, I went to Barcelona for a film and trip to do some YouTube videos. And just for yourself. Yeah. So me, my film, I was on a boat with Red Bull earlier and one of my close friends. So we went out to Barcelona, Switzerland and Barcelona, film some videos at some good skate parks and stuff. And then I was in the airport on the way home and I got an email. And like at this point, like I'm barely using email. Like I'm far from professional in any means. I mean, I'm like trying to be. And I get an email from a shoe shop, a shoe brand in England called Clocks.
Starting point is 01:42:42 I'm not sure what the American equivalent would be, but they basically- I've seen Clark's. They're like known for like doing like school shoes and stuff like that. Yeah. Yeah. And they basically sent an email through an agency and it was like, Clark shoes, want to do a skate shoe for like, you know, for kids to wear at schools, skating and whatever. And so I was like, yeah, like sounds good to me, you know? And so I spoke with them and it was like, half of what I was making from the job,
Starting point is 01:43:09 but it was like enough in my head. I was like, I can live off that if I do this deal. And I was like, if I'm gonna live off that, I need to move to Colby. And so one day after work, I texted him. Why? Because that's where you knew you would go to the next level because yeah group of guys All time it made no sense to stay in Newcastle where all the people I ride with work anyway, right?
Starting point is 01:43:32 And and they're riding as a hobby whereas I'm I moved to Colby the guys here. They just be into the games They just don't talk go there. They're at the top of the field You don't mean so it was like I need they know who you are though at that point? Do those guys know, hey, there's this up and coming kid. There's this kid out there. Yeah, yeah, like no of me, you know what I mean? Like, I was just like a kid. Like I was like this kid that's trying to come up and.
Starting point is 01:43:54 Right. Yeah, and I texted them saying, I need to chat to you like tonight. And like I was saying, I wasn't living there. Living with my girlfriend and her family. And I remember I went in and like, I just wanted like an off the cuff chat to be be like, yeah, quit my job, this out. And everyone went in and it was like, so serious. It was like, and I told them, I was like, I don't quit my job. I've got this and then
Starting point is 01:44:14 my prep like, Oh, you told your mom and dad this? And then the biggest support is biggest do anything for us. Right. And they're like, you can't, you can't live on that. Like that's not going to work. What happens if this happens? blah blah and like you know just being protective as parents are like they don't want to make a mistake and I remember like it got to me so I didn't speak to them for like a month got to me so much I stormed out I was like well I've told you what I'm doing that's what I'm doing like I'm my mind's made up I don't like store like we did we were like weird terms for like a month and then You know, we started talking again and the most frustrating bit was actually so Hey, dude, that's big boy shit, by the way, every fucking 20 year old kid has to go through that
Starting point is 01:44:56 Yeah, there's gonna be a point when your parents can't just Yeah, where you gotta tell your parents to fuck off I I went through it and i'm terrified of when my kids do it, but it's like a growing up point at some point I have to be like hey fuck you dude get out of your responsibility over It's not a bad choice like yeah, and the worst was so I quit my job right before COVID it right Uh-huh, and I quit my job two weeks later everyone gets sent home on full pay for like six Everyone gets sent home on full pay for like six months. Oh, shit. So it's like a running joke.
Starting point is 01:45:31 So the BMX brand arrived for a tall order. The owner is another Red Bull rider and he's been through, I've been with them for like eight years since I was a kid. Like, and he's seen the whole journey and it's like a running joke, like, about like all these things that have happened in my journey, like just, just spots of just bad luck. And then that's one of them. Like I quit and then everyone gets full pay for six months anyway. And so yeah, I quit the job and moved out to Colby and like, it was, I was on the struggle bus at first, like, you know, never lived away from home eating like what we call like beige buffet, you know, just like whatever can go in the grill.
Starting point is 01:46:08 Like, like living, and then, and I get to a point where like, I couldn't afford it. So I had to start working at the skate park. And like, I'm trying to make a name for myself as this professional BMX rider. I want kids to look up to me. I'm starting to gain a following on social media and I'm serving sandwiches in the skate park cafe.
Starting point is 01:46:29 It's like so hard to be building this like, you know, brand about myself, but I'm this writer and everything. And then I'm also doing this. It's like, so it was, it was a crazy. Someone's like, Hey, will you sign my sandwich? Yeah. It's like, it's like, Hey, will you sign my sandwich? You're in the skate park the day before and someone, a kid comes over, asks for a photo and like, Oh, I like commenting on your videos on Instagram.
Starting point is 01:46:52 And then the next day you put in a sandwich through the till for them. And it's like, it's just, it wasn't good for the brand. I was trying to build, you know what I mean? It was like, uh, yeah. And then eventually Red Bull came just at the right time. Like just as I was seriously running on fumes, I got like the Red Bull helmet. You know, it's funny. It would have been cool to, if that happens to the next guy who's coming up, hey, just lean into that shit. Be like, hey, I know you guys love me. Want
Starting point is 01:47:24 me to serve you a sandwich? Come on over to... Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I like making a deal with different delis. Like, look, I can come to your deli, serve you sandwiches, kids will love it. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:47:35 And what do you mean you got a Red Bull helmet? What's that? So I mean, I've seen those guys with the helmets and it's like, yeah, those are the cool kids. That's like the way you get put on Red Bull, it's always a big helmet reveal like it's always like another athlete will give you your helmet or or like a Red Bull cap or whatever in the sport you do you know what I mean and yeah so like getting in in all cycling mountain bike BMX road it's like a big tradition like they film you getting your helmet and uh yeah like I went and I thought I was doing
Starting point is 01:48:07 an interview about his signature bike part that I just brought out with the brand. And like I say, the owner of the brand is a Red Bull rider. And halfway through the interview he's like, oh, could you just throw this tall order t-shirt on for the interview? And he hands me over a bag and I put my hand in the bag and it's a Red Bull helmet.
Starting point is 01:48:26 Mate. The feeling like was... Were you a Red Bull athlete at that time? No, no, so like I knew they were talking about me, you know what I mean? Like inquiring kind of and like it went quiet and I was like, I was chasing him and saying like, oh, could you like ask, you know, are they still interested? Like, this is like the dream. And then he gives me this Red Bull helmet. And I just like burst out laughing because I'm like, if I don't laugh, I'm just going to cry. And he's like, and I'm like, I'm just like, take the helmet out of the bag. And I'm laughing. I'm like, nah, is this your helmet? Like, are you messing with us? And he's like, he's like, nah, he's like, welcome to the family. And I was like, no, like, I'm like, hugging him and everything. And this was just after, so's like welcome to the family. And I was like, no, like, I'm like hugging him and everything. And this was just after, so he'd actually had the helmet
Starting point is 01:49:07 painted for like a couple months, like Red Bull were ready to put me on, but because of COVID we couldn't meet up to film it. And that's such a big part of getting Red Bull. So, and then I start hugging him and everything. And like, like you only meant to meet up in certain groups, you meant to be socially distanced and I'm hugging him on camera. And's thinking like I remember me like first thing
Starting point is 01:49:27 He said was like well now I don't know if I can post it because you're hugging me It was the craziest feeling like oh my Hey, and do you still wear that exact helmet? Hey, and do you still wear that exact helmet? No, so I've had like a few now. My parents actually got the very first one. The very first one I got, I said, I gave it to them. And like, yeah, I had like a fair few now, to be fair. And they're cool enough where you
Starting point is 01:49:57 can add like little features. You know, like you can add small designs into the helmet. So like I always have some whether it's like I've had a couple that have been like hometown based, like had all the landmarks, my hometown or had quotes on that I've liked or things like that. So the Red Bull thing, and it's crazy. So you become a Red Bull athlete and then basically you get resources. If you perform like them building a ramp, shutting down a skate park, for you to set a world record. That's the like amazing thing about Red Bull like as a sponsor is so much more Than a paycheck for wearing a helmet
Starting point is 01:50:30 So if I get injured like what when I need an MRI on my ankle, I was talking about earlier I was they think they booked me an MRI did for the next inquired about like you think it would be possible to help me I'll get an MRI upon problems my ankle think I need to take some sort of action. MRI was booked for the next day, private clinic. If anything like that, they have like the athlete performance center in Austria, like where you can go and get any sort of testing done. And like, they make dreams a reality.
Starting point is 01:50:59 Like if you have like a crazy idea and you pitch it to them, they like the idea, they'll do it. Like, they're such an amazing sponsor to have. Is Red Bull's only product the drink? Yeah. Yeah. Like the red, so the Red Bull caps, like staff members, so like staff aren't
Starting point is 01:51:18 allowed to wear the Red Bull caps. The Red Bull caps are athlete only. They've got like a little tag inside it says athletes only. So like no members of staff wear Red Bull brand only for the athletes, which I think is pretty sick. And so they don't have, what a crazy, so they've really stayed in their lane. They're just, they're a drink company,
Starting point is 01:51:37 I mean, that basically has parlayed all their resources into just supporting athletes. Yeah, like who uses energy drinks more than athletes? I mean, there's people out there drinking them, but like you're trying to promote promote your energy drink to people who are going to have it. It's like what better way than with doing amazing things with crazy sports? Like they're in every sport, every sport. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:52:01 You've seen any weird sports that they're in that you didn't even know existed, like alligator wrestling or some shit I know I know Red Bull have a rule against they don't want to any sports animals. Oh interesting. Oh, wow Like horses like horse riding even they don't do anything without there. Oh That's probably safe there's all sorts of weirdos like probably protesting all that shit right? Yeah, I had a horse It's mean you pulled the horse's tail So I think Video games do they do video games they do. Yeah. Yeah, they got
