Welcome back to the Ultimate Human Podcast. I'm human biologist Gary Brekka, and today we're
exploring the vital yet often overlooked topic, the connection between hydration and cognitive
function. Staying hydrated is not just about physical health, it significantly impacts your
mental clarity and your performance. By the end of this episode, you'll understand the importance
of hydration and how to maintain optimal levels for peak cognitive performance. This episode is packed with science-backed
information and actionable advice to help you enhance your mental health and your physical
well-being. Water makes up about 60% of the human body, and it's crucial for nearly every bodily
function. Hydration is essential for maintaining the balance of bodily fluids, regulating temperature,
and supporting cellular functions.
But beyond these physical roles, hydration is critically important for brain function.
A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that even a mild dehydration
can impair cognitive performance and mood.
Dehydration can lead to difficulties in concentration,
short-term memory problems, and increased feelings of anxiety and even fatigue.
This underscores the importance
of maintaining adequate hydration
for optimal cognitive function.

Dehydration impacts the brain in several ways.
Number one, reduced brain volume.
According to research from the Journal of American College of Nutrition,
dehydration causes brain cells to lose water,
and this leads to reduced brain volume and impaired cognitive function.
Slower neural activity.
Dehydration can also slow down the communication between neurons,
which hampers your ability to process information quickly and accurately.
Increased cortisol levels. Dehydration elevates cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone,
which can impair memory and cognitive functions, as highlighted by a study in Physiology and
Behavior. Electrolyte imbalance. Proper hydration maintains the balance of electrolytes, which are
crucial for nerve function and signal transmission. An imbalance can lead to confusion, difficulty focusing, and other
kinds of memory deficits. The benefits of staying hydrated include improved focus
and concentration. Staying hydrated ensures that your brain receives
necessary nutrients and oxygen and this improves your focus and your
concentration. Even enhanced memory. Proper hydration supports the brain's
capacity to retain and recall information effectively. Better mood. Adequate water
intakes helps regulate mood and reduce the likelihood of mood swings and irritability.
Increased productivity. Hydration boosts cognitive function, making you more productive and efficient
in your tasks. Now here's some actionable steps to stay hydrated. Number one,
drink water regularly. Aim to drink at least eight glasses, about two liters of water daily.
Adjust based on your activity level, your climate, and your individual needs. I drink hydrogen water.
Monitor your hydration status by paying attention to the signs of dehydration, such as dark colored
urine, dry mouth, and even headaches. Use hydration apps to track your water intake if you need to.
Incorporate hydrating foods.
Foods like fruits and vegetables with high water content
such as cucumbers, watermelon, and oranges really boost your hydration.
Set reminders.
Some people have lost the satiation response that reminds them to drink,
so you can use alarms or apps to remind you to drink water throughout the day,
especially if you have a busy schedule.
Carry a hydrogen water bottle.
Keeping a reusable hydrogen water bottle with you
at all times can make drinking water
more convenient and healthier.
I use my Echo Go daily and it aids in my hydration.
Hydrate before and after exercise.
Ensure you drink water before, during,
and after physical activity to replace fluids
that are lost through sweat.
Limit dehydrating beverages, guys.
Reduce the intake of caffeinated and alcoholic beverages as they can lead to dehydration.
To maintain optimal hydration and cognitive function, integrate these practices into your
daily routine.
Your morning routine, you can start your day with a glass of water,
put a pinch of Baja Gold Sea Salt to kickstart your metabolism and rehydrate after a restful
night's sleep. Remember, Baja Gold has trace minerals as well as sodium in it, so you get
those electrolytes and you remineralize the body. At mealtimes, drink a glass of water with each
meal to aid in digestion and maintain hydration levels.
Work environment.
Keep a water bottle at your desk and just take regular sips throughout the day.
I never leave my house without my hydrogen water bottle,
and when it goes off, it beeps and it reminds me to drink it.
Physical activity.
Ensure that adequate hydration is done before, during, and after exercise to support performance and your recovery.
Let's talk about hydration and cognitive performance in different populations.
Children and adolescents, for example.
Studies from the University of Illinois indicate that hydration significantly affects children's cognitive functions,
including their memory and their attention span.
So encourage your children to drink water regularly, especially during school hours.
As far as the elderly go, older adults are at a higher risk
of dehydration due to a diminished sense of thirst.
Adequate hydration is crucial
for maintaining cognitive health and preventing confusion
and cognitive decline in the elderly.
As far as athletes go, hydration is absolutely critical
for athletic performance.
This is why I encourage athletes to drink hydrogen water.
Dehydration impairs their
strength, endurance, and cognitive functions that are necessary for strategic thinking and their
coordination. If you're an office worker, for those in sedentary jobs, maintaining hydration
can prevent fatigue and improve concentration and your productivity. Regular breaks to drink water
and stretch can enhance your overall well-being, and these are simple tasks to incorporate into your daily life.
Hydration is a fundamental aspect of maintaining cognitive function and overall health.
By understanding the connection between hydration and mental performance,
you can take proactive steps to ensure you stay adequately hydrated.
Remember, staying hydrated is not just about drinking water.
It's about integrating hydration into your lifestyle to support your brain and your body.
