Starting point is 00:00:00 Did you know that the quality of your drinking water can significantly affect your health? Unfiltered water can be harmful, potentially causing health issues like gastrointestinal illness, nervous system problems, reproductive complications, and even some chronic diseases. We know that water is essential for every single cell in our body. However, not all water is safe to drink. Clean water supports digestion, nutrient absorption, and detoxification within our bodies. Let's uncover the truth about water quality and what you can do to ensure that you're drinking the absolute best. Hello, Ultimate Humans.
Starting point is 00:00:41 I'm human biologist Gary Brekka, and today we're getting into a topic that is vital for your health, water quality. August is National Water Quality Month, a time to focus on the importance of clean, safe water for our health and our environment. Water is the essence of life, but not all water is created equal. Let's explore the science behind clean, high-quality water and how it impacts your health. Did you know that the quality of your drinking water can significantly affect your health? Unfiltered water can be harmful, potentially causing health issues like gastrointestinal illness, nervous system problems, reproductive complications, and even some chronic diseases. Let's uncover the truth about water quality and what you can do to ensure that you're
Starting point is 00:01:20 drinking the absolute best. A recent systematic review of water quality by the National Toxicology Program yielded the conclusion that fluoride, classified as a neurotoxin, was found to have an inverse relationship to IQ, meaning that as fluoride in our drinking water went up, IQ went down. This was especially true in prepubescent teens.
Starting point is 00:01:39 When you read the study, and I'll put a link to that below, you'll find that they studied thousands of water municipality locations all over the country. And essentially what they found was that fluoride, which is a known neurotoxin, as the concentration of fluoride in our drinking water increased,
Starting point is 00:01:55 it had a negative effect on IQ. All of the statistics are in that report. But in conclusion, basically what they found was that the fluoride and the chlorine in our water, as well as microplastics and pharmaceuticals, has not only been on the rise, but in conclusion, basically what they found was that the fluoride and the chlorine in our water, as well as microplastics and pharmaceuticals, has not only been on the rise, but it is now linked to a number of chronic health diseases. To begin, let's discuss why water quality is so important.
Starting point is 00:02:18 We know that water is essential for every single cell in our body, every tissue and organ in our bodies. However, not all water is safe to drink. Poor water quality can harbor harmful contaminants like heavy metals, pesticides, pathogens, herbicides, even pharmaceuticals and microplastics, which we know pose serious health risks. Common contaminants in our water include lead, which can damage the nervous system, chlorine, which can irritate the skin and the eyes, and microbial pathogens, which actually cause gastrointestinal illness. Understanding what's in your water is the first step to protecting your health. Let's delve into some fascinating research findings on water quality. Clean water supports digestion, nutrient absorption,
Starting point is 00:02:54 and detoxification within our bodies. Studies also indicate that hydrogen-rich water can modulate immune function and platelet count, further emphasizing the importance of high-quality water for maintaining good health. You know I'm a huge fan of hydrogen water. It has an impact on circulation, an impact on inflammation, an impact on how we absorb nutrients, and it even feeds an entire class of bacteria in our gut that rely on hydrogen gas. You can get the hydrogen water studies in the links below. Now let's examine the different types of water available. Tap, bottled, and filter. Each has its pros and its cons. While tap water is convenient and cost-effective, its quality can vary depending on local water treatment processes. Bottled water is portable and often perceived as
Starting point is 00:03:35 cleaner, but it can be expensive, filled with microplastics, and not good for the environment. Now filter water, on the other hand, offers a balance by providing clean water while reducing contaminants, often at a lower long-term cost even than bottled water. So how can you ensure that the water you drink is of the highest quality? One of the simplest steps is to use reliable water filtration system at home. This can significantly reduce the presence of harmful contaminants. Some of the best water filtration systems include reverse osmosis, carbon filters, and UV purification systems. Now, each type has its own benefits, so choose one that suits your needs and your local water conditions.
Starting point is 00:04:10 You know, I personally use the Echo Hydrogen Water Bottle, which I do have an affiliation with. It doesn't filter the water, but it enriches the water with hydrogen gas. I believe hydrogen gas to be one of the greatest discoveries and health benefits that you can drink in modern medical history. If you go to hydrogenstudies.com, you can read all of the benefits of hydrogen water. I'm actually gonna put a couple of links below to some of the key studies showing how it improves inflammation.
Starting point is 00:04:34 It actually can help heal and seal the gut, how it provides valuable gases for the bacteria in your gut, how it can improve the absorption of nutrients and supplements that we take, even our vitamins, our minerals, and our amino acids. It's a fantastic way to ensure that you're getting the cleanest, healthiest water possible. So I take pre-filtered water or bottled water, I put it into this hydrogen water bottle, and I add the hydrogen gas to it.
Starting point is 00:04:57 If you're ever to come to my home, I'm a psycho about water filtration systems. I actually have a water filtration system that filters all the way down close to 0.1 micron, which is close to the size of a virus. And one of the reasons why I do that is that I want to make sure there's no microplastics, no pharmaceuticals, no pesticides, herbicides, certainly no chlorine or fluoride gas. Because one of the things we don't think about very often is when we go into these commercial steam rooms and you kind of smell that chlorine, well, that's chlorine gas, right? So if we take municipal water, we bring it into a steam room and then we add heat to it
Starting point is 00:05:31 and we turn it into steam, we've now vaporized all of those things like fluoride gas, chlorine gas, potentially microplastics or even pharmaceuticals. Now, I haven't read any research that says vaporizing the pharmaceuticals can be bad for you, but clearly breathing chloride gas and fluoride gas is not in your best interest. So I avoid commercial steam rooms. And in the steam room I have at my house, I actually filter the water down close to 0.1
Starting point is 00:05:54 micron. So you get really good clean steam. You only need to have one of these in your house. You can have it in your kitchen where most of your family gets their drinking water and you can just get, you know, aluminum water bottles or glass water bottles, and you can refill them at your sink. And you'll find that you have a lower per unit cost than buying bottled water and bringing it into your house. Even if you buy it by the gallon, which is pretty cost-effective.
Starting point is 00:06:15 And this way you can leave your house every day and you can actually take your four-stage RO filtered water with you. So we've had so many amazing challenges this entire year that I decided that August, we're going to take a break and it's just going to be the strongest August ever. And it's just going to be all about giveaways. I'm going to give away five more of the ultimate human swag boxes. These things are really cool. It says aging is the aggressive pursuit of comfort. You get an
Starting point is 00:06:39 ultimate human t-shirt in your size. You get our ultimate human proteinin Bars. You get a full month's worth of the Perfect Aminos, which I think you should be taking every morning. These are all eight of the essential amino acids. You get the Baja Gold Sea Salt, one of my favorite ways to mineralize the body. You get the Stirrer Rod because sometimes these don't mix well with water. I'm also giving you a full Echo Go Plus Hydrogen Water Bottle and our Ultimate Human Shaker. So these are going to go out to five people that just subscribed to the YouTube channel. And I'm going to pick five lucky winners and I'm going to send you an Ultimate Human swag box right to your front door. Now let's get back to the Ultimate Human podcast. So finally, let's talk about the connection between hydration
Starting point is 00:07:19 and health. If you want to take it to the next level, you get a whole home filtration system. These are less expensive than you think. You can get entire whole home filtration systems for less than $5,000. I know $5,000 is a lot of money, so I'm not saying that you have to have these kinds of filtration systems, but I've been on podcasts and stage talks, and when people ask me about water filtration and they think that the cost is going to be $25,000 or $30,000, I just make sure that they know that it's a few thousand, not tens of thousands of dollars. Again, I try to make these shorts informative
Starting point is 00:07:50 and things that you can put to work every day in your daily life without spending a lot of money, but actually investing in good filtration system, at least for one location in your house, like your kitchen, is a really, really good idea. You may have seen some of the research that I posted lately about how quick chemicals can actually transfer through the skin.
Starting point is 00:08:07 Things like chlorine can absorb through your skin. And there's a video on my Instagram where I actually made my cameraman volunteer to put his fingers in a glass of non-filtered tap water. And I took two glasses of tap water, set them next to each other, and he put his fingers in one for about 30 seconds and pulled them out.
Starting point is 00:08:24 We tested both of those glasses for chlorine. and you could see that the amount of chlorine in the non-filtered tap water version was very, very high. And in the exact same glass, it was very low if traceable at all. And the reason for that is it absorbed right into his skin. And so I'm not trying to fear monger, but I'm a huge, huge fan of water filtration. And as you guys become more successful in life, the best place to put your investment is back into your health. So if you'd like, I'll list some water filtration systems that I like. I'll put those at the end of this podcast short. I'll tell you the one that I use. I will disclose that I actually
Starting point is 00:08:57 have an affiliation with Echo Water, but I also think that that affiliation is justified because I think they have the best water filtration system that's available, at least in the United States. So finally, let's talk about the connection between hydration and health. We know that staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining energy levels, cognitive function, even physical performance. Proper hydration helps us regulate body temperature. It actually lubricates our joints. It helps us flush out toxins. It's actually a part of the exchange of nutrients in something called the blood-brain barrier. Remember, you have 63,000 miles of blood vessel in your body, 63,000 miles. Most people say, well, the skin is the largest organ in the body.
Starting point is 00:09:34 Well, the skin has the surface area of about half a tennis court. The inside lining of your blood vessels, the endothelium or the endocalix, has about six tennis courts. So it's actually 12 times the surface area. So that area is where we take nutrients from the blood and pass them into the tissue. And we take waste from the tissue and pass it into the blood. And by waste, I don't mean stool or urine,
Starting point is 00:09:57 I mean cellular waste. You know, the process of metabolism is actually a very dirty process. Breaking down food, metabolizing it, turning it into energy, and then having the cell discard this into your bloodstream. This is a very, it's not a toxic process, but it's actually a very dirty process. Hydration helps us to flush those things from our body. So every ounce of water that you put into your body matters. And if you put clean water into your body, your body's not becoming the filter. Creating this invisible
Starting point is 00:10:24 barrier around yourself, like an invisible fence, and filtering things before they make it to your body. You have two choices. You can either allow your body to be the filter, or you can filter things before they get there. And this is very true when it comes to water. But it also comes to food and other substances we're going to put in our body. When you look at food and you say, that food's either going to serve me or it's going to steal from me.
Starting point is 00:10:45 Kind of makes the decision easy about whether or not you want to eat something that's laden with things that your body's going to have to, you know, chemicals that your body's going to have to separate in order to get to the nutrients. So to maintain optimal hydration, I want you to aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day.
Starting point is 00:11:00 My preference is that you drink hydrogen water. But if hydrogen water is out of your budget, try to drink filtered water and make the first investment that you make in your home a filtered water system because in the long run, it's going to actually save you money. You can carry a reusable water bottle to remind yourself to drink regularly and consider adding a slice of lemon or cucumber for flavor, and that adds a few nutrients. I actually add something called Baja Gold Sea Salt to my drinking water so that I get minerals into the water, and that little pinch of salt,
Starting point is 00:11:30 you barely even taste. So in summary, let's recap the key points that we've discussed about water quality. Water quality matters because it directly affects our health. By understanding the types of water using effective filtration methods, we can ensure we're drinking the best possible water. Staying hydrated with clean water supports all of our bodily functions and overall well-being. So take control of your health by prioritizing clean water. Simple changes can lead to significant improvements in how you feel and how you function. Water is life. By paying attention to the quality of your water, you can make a significant difference in your health. Stay hydrated and stay ultimate. It's just science.
