Hey there, my friend.
Welcome to Wake Me Up and to this very simple and straight.
forward guided mindfulness meditation.
It gets so overcomplicated sometimes.
But meditation really is a very simple process and it's life changing.
The goal is just to sit, relax, and exist exactly as you are for a few moments.
It has an amazing ability to create calm and this sense of equanimity or balance within
yourself. So whatever you may have heard about meditation and how it's supposed to be done,
just put it aside for a moment. Open your heart and your mind to a new experience and just see
how you like it. Begin by finding a comfortable position. Maybe that's sitting or lying down.
Don't worry too much about what it looks like. Rather, focus on what it feels.
like. What's most important is that you're comfortable. So make that the priority. And once you've
settled into that position, just take a nice deep breath in, filling up all the way into your lungs,
and then expanding the diaphragm down into the belly. Hold for just a second, and then exhale,
release. And as you let that air fall back out, you can gently close your eyes now that you've
entered your own internal world. Just take this time to exist exactly as you are, noticing
what it feels like to be you right here and right now. Try to approach. Try to
approach it with a sense of curiosity. What does it really feel like to take a breath for all of the
places in your body where you can notice the breath? And at some point inevitably, your mind is going
to do exactly what minds are supposed to do. It's going to wander off. It's going to think
and try to solve problems.
And that's perfectly fine.
It's completely normal and totally expected.
You haven't done anything wrong when this happens.
In fact, this is exactly what should happen.
You see, there are all kinds of things that grab for our attention.
Many of them are external.
Like the sounds.
going on around you. Others are internal. These are our thoughts, our worries, our questions,
and meditating is the practice of being present, of simply existing in the here and now.
And these kinds of distractions are part of our existence. What happens is these distractions linger.
or perhaps it's better to say the mind lingers on these distractions.
And this pulls our attention away from simply existing in the present moment.
So when you notice that you've been distracted, try not to get frustrated or upset or think that you're doing it wrong.
Because actually, by noticing that you've been distracted, you,
are doing it right.
That's because the act of noticing
is an act that happens only in the present moment.
So when distractions arise
and you get pulled out of the present moment,
just notice that you've been distracted
and turn your attention,
your curiosity,
your act of noticing
to something that is
in the present moment, like your breath or your heartbeat.
Any sensation of your body is a great place to start.
So for the next few moments, I'll stop instructing you,
and I'll leave more open space for you to practice this act of noticing the present moment.
I'll chime in once or twice, just to help you.
stay on track. Here is a gentle reminder that if you've been distracted, it's perfectly fine,
and just to bring yourself back to the present moment. My friend, great job. It's about time to
begin wrapping up. So, if your mind's wandered off, just bring it back. Notice whatever is
supporting your body.
Whether that's a chair, the floor, or anything else,
notice the sounds going on around you.
Touch of the air on your skin.
Take one final deep breath in.
The deepest one you've taken yet today.
Hold at the top.
And then exhale, release.
And when you're ready, you can slowly open your eyes,
gather yourself and come out of that.
I hope you enjoyed this guided meditation
and that it's helped you understand
what the practice of meditation
is actually supposed to be.
I encourage you to repeat this practice daily
and you can do that on your own
or by saving and repeating this episode.
What you'll come to find by repeating this
is that meditation is a practice
and the more you do it,
the more self-aware you'll be
come and the better able you'll be to self-regulate.
But that's all for now.
Thanks for tuning in.
I hope to see you back here soon.
And until next time, have an absolutely fantastic day.
