Hey there, my friend, thanks for joining me on Wake Me Up.
for this meditation that's here to offer a tool to help you during the process of overcoming
addiction or other harmful habits, especially in those moments when you have cravings or urges.
I do need to give the warning that this is not medical advice or a replacement for treatment
from a mental health professional.
If you are in serious danger of health or safety,
please contact the local authorities or an addiction helpline.
With that out of the way,
go ahead and find a comfortable position
where you'd like to meditate.
And once you're there, take a nice deep breath,
filling all the way up into your chest
and down into your belly,
and then exhale, release.
and gently close your eyes.
Allow your body to soften and relax.
Release the muscles of your face and jaw.
Allow your shoulders to sink down and as best you can.
Choose to enter this meditation with an open mind.
Don't blame yourself for being here.
When addiction arises,
and there are many, many kinds of it.
We need to ask first, why the pain?
Because you've learned to cope with a pain
that was instilled in you from an outside source.
It's not your fault that the pain exists.
However, it is your responsibility
to address that pain in a more healthy and helpful manner.
You owe that much to yourself.
So maybe even start this meditation with a sense of pride because you are taking the power into your hands and changing your life for the better.
Begin to bring an image into your mind's eye. And it's an image of yourself as a child. Whatever visions or thoughts may come with that.
Try to envision yourself in a loving way, innocent, deserving of love and kindness.
Certainly, you want to look out for this child version of you.
You want the best for them.
You would protect them from harm.
Recognize that this child is still you, living within you all the time.
So sit here with them and repeat these words.
as though you're speaking them to this child version of you and accept you unconditionally.
I know you will make mistakes and I forgive you for them.
How is it that this sweet, innocent child could develop the harmful habit that brings you here today?
Let your mind wander along the path that's brought you here.
and recognize that it was never your intention to allow this behavior to become problematic.
But for one reason or another, it has.
And that's because we never adopt behaviors, fully knowing they will become a problem.
We usually adopt them at first in a single moment to avoid a particular pain.
may be as simple as the discomfort of social pressure, just wanting to fit in, or it may be as complex,
as familial relationships, as you observe the path of behavior that led this sweet, innocent child
here today.
Try to notice what pain or pains they were trying to deal with and avoid.
by first adopting this behavior.
Let any thoughts or memories arise and try to observe all of it without judgment.
Like you're watching a movie on the big screen.
Were there any other additional types of pain that may have been layered on later?
And now that you've observed these pains, which led you to this habit,
Ask yourself whether the habit actually solves the pain in the long term.
Arguably, it may have helped in that one moment, but most likely it's quite the opposite.
This behavior hasn't solved that pain.
It's actually created more pain.
So now, you have the choice and the chance
as you sit here with the child version of yourself
to tell them whatever it is they really need to hear
that is the solution to this pain
and you know what it is that needs to be said.
Don't be afraid.
It's just you here.
You're safe to be open and speak freely.
Ensure the child knows
that this harmful habit will be presented as a way to avoid the pain,
as will many other harmful behaviors
and make sure that the child knows better than to believe these false cures,
your experience is proof of that.
And now, having explained all of this,
maybe this child will be, this child,
understands how you got here.
And they don't want this for you.
They don't want this for themselves.
And in this moment,
you have the choice,
the grand power
to change your path going forward.
So you hold the child version of you by the hand.
As you each repeat to each other,
I want the best for you.
I know you will make mistakes.
and I forgive you for them.
I love and accept you unconditionally.
Feel that connection with your whole self
and recognize that you are lucky enough
to have been given another chance,
another opportunity to love and heal yourself in the right way,
the way that will actually solve
that underlying pain
that's brought you down this long,
winding path
to this very moment
and that healing all begins
with loving
and respecting yourself.
So choose
here and now
to give yourself
the love,
the kindness,
the care and respect,
that you deserve. Isn't that something you'd like to do for this child version of you?
It's quite an inspiring mission, isn't it? So take a deep breath with me,
filling up with all of that fresh air and that sense of self-love, and then exhale, release,
letting go of any worries, any doubts, pailing again, reminding yourself.
why you came here and exhaling, expelling those momentary passing cravings and urges,
out of your mind and body.
Once more now, inhale the deepest breath you've taken yet today.
And exhale, release.
Now when you're ready, you can begin to bring yourself back
noticing the sensation of whatever supporting your body,
feeling that touch of the air on your skin,
and bringing some gentle movements,
just beginning to wake the body back up.
And whenever you're ready,
you can slowly open your eyes,
gather yourself,
and come out of that.
And may you keep this image of your child's self in mind.
and this experience you've just had with them close to your heart
as you go find something to do next
that makes you feel good
that shows yourself the love, kindness,
care, and respect you so deeply deserve.
