I'm Tyler, as always, and I'm so grateful to have you here with me.
Starting point is 00:00:31 me. This week, we're going to be talking about identifying, discovering, and living in line with our core values. When we really spend time working with our core values and focusing on them, it can be a transformational experience that completely changes the way you live your life and how you feel while doing it. In this episode, we'll get up, get out of bed, get the day started and do some very simple self-reflection to help you start figuring out what your core values are. But before we dive in, let's take one moment just to pause, have a few deep breaths, and center the mind and body for the day. So just stop whatever you're doing. And enjoy this moment purely for yourself. Take a deep breath in. Feel the air filling up in your lungs.
Starting point is 00:01:42 and your chest. Hold at the top. And then exhale, release. Just let the air fall back out. No need to force anything. Great. Let's do a couple more just like that. Each one, a little bit deeper.
Starting point is 00:02:04 So inhale, fill all the way up, and then exhale, let it go. Last one, inhale, even deeper this time. Hold at the top. and then exhale, release. And if you're in bed, you can use this moment to roll over, make your way up, and get your day started. It's those people who choose to be ambitious
Starting point is 00:02:45 in living life in their own unique way. Those people are the ones who are the happiest, the most satisfied and fulfilled with their lives. So choose to be one of those people today. You're already well on your way by listening to this episode and reflecting on your core values as we're about to do. First off, let's define what a core value is. Simply put, core values are the fundamental beliefs and highest priorities that drive one's behavior. These beliefs are in everything we do.
Starting point is 00:03:23 For example, one person may have adventurousness or the seeking of new experiences as a core value. And that will thread through all of the aspects of their life, from how they prioritize travel or eating new foods, to the job they seek and the relationships they build. But we all have different core values, and that's great. Through understanding our own values and those of other people, we can live better, happier, more fulfilling lives, and help others do that too.
Starting point is 00:03:56 Now, when first getting into this topic, many people think that they already know their values, and maybe you do. But even if you do know your core values, how often are you checking in on them, ensuring that you're making decisions and taking actions that align with those values. Plus, our core values change over time,
Starting point is 00:04:17 though it's usually slowly, but nonetheless, it's important that we routinely check in on them. And checking in on your current values means reflecting on the way you're living and whether those actions and decisions you're making on a daily basis are aligned with what your present-day values actually are. Perhaps one of the most important things to reflect on when it comes to core values is where those values are coming from.
Starting point is 00:04:45 Sometimes we're living by values that were taught rather than the ones we actually personally believe in. So I'm just going to pose some questions for you now, and I'll give you some time to consider them and just mold them over. Feel free to just do that in your mind, or if you'd like, you can journal about it. And I certainly don't want to rush you through this, but I don't want to waste your time either. So I'll leave it to you to press pause and take more time for yourself if that feels necessary at any point. So let's start with this reflection.
Starting point is 00:05:21 What are three to five things that are the most important to you? in your life. And try to focus on broad ideas that can cover multiple facets. For example, adventurousness, like I said before, honesty, innovation, wisdom. If you want a list of values to help get you started, just Google list of core values, and you'll find a bunch of really great ones. So I'll give you about 20 or 30 seconds to think about that now. And again, if you need more time, just press pause.
Starting point is 00:06:24 Great. So now that you've begun to identify what some of your core values might be, try to search into their root system and figure out where those core values are coming from. Are they your own internal inclinations that you've honed and figured out over time? Or were they planted in you by someone or something else, your parents, your friends, your schooling, your society? And just because they didn't come from you doesn't mean they're necessary, wrong. But these are the core beliefs that are driving who you are. So you should be aware of where
Starting point is 00:07:03 they're coming from. And they're very well, maybe more than one source. So just take a moment now to ponder on that. Great. Now finally, consider whether you're living life in line with these values. Are your current habits, routines, financial decisions, relationships, and just general daily actions supporting these values and moving them forward. Take some time to reflect on that now. All right, so I hope that brought you a little more self-awareness. A wonderful practice that you can do after reflecting on these questions is to observe yourself for a few days and just notice whether your actions are reflecting your values.
Starting point is 00:08:47 It's really easy in hindsight to think that we are reflecting our values in our daily lives. but sometimes that can be a little twisted and not completely accurate. So just observe yourself, non-judgmentally, simply for information gathering. And if you notice that some of your actions don't reflect your top values, note what values those actions do reflect, where those values are coming from, and whether those values are things that you want to define your life. Another great practice is to think about a few people
Starting point is 00:09:23 who you really admire. Do some research on them and learn a little bit more about them. And think about what it is you love the most about them. What really attracts you to them? You may be surprised at how often they share some of the same values that you do. You can learn so much about yourself and improve your life so greatly by becoming more self-aware of your core values through practices like this. It's a great way to support your goals, and your mental health. The more often we check in with our values, the better we can see which habits are more supportive to us,
Starting point is 00:10:01 which ones we should do more of, and where we can make adjustments. The decisions we make, the people we surround ourselves with, all reflect our values. Knowing your values brings you closer to knowing yourself and embodying your truest, most authentic self. And when other people witness those qualities in you,
Starting point is 00:10:23 You are giving them permission to do the same for themselves. So make your own life better by diving into your core values like we're doing this week and letting them shine through your life. And that way, you'll make other people's lives better as well. But that's all for today. Thanks so much for tuning in. I hope you've found this helpful. I'll be back tomorrow for a motivational bit on this same topic.
Starting point is 00:10:49 So I hope to see you there. Until then, go out and have an absolutely. fantastic day.
