Now before our episode begins, here's a quick word from our sponsors. Hey there, and welcome back to Wake Me Up. As always, I'm Tyler, your host. Thanks for tuning in today. This week, we're working on letting go of the ego, and more specifically, about being okay when we're wrong and not having all the answers. In today's meditation, we're going to work on that.
Starting point is 00:00:47 And hopefully, by the end of this episode, you'll be able to accept your own flaws, your own imperfection, your own lack of knowledge, a little more freely. So go ahead and find a comfortable position. Any position that you like to meditate in works just fine. As you may know, I recommend that you meditate sitting up, but that's just because I don't want you to fall asleep. So do whatever works best for you. And once you've found that position,
Starting point is 00:01:26 mentally put everything else to the side for now. You chose to be here and do the same. and do this meditation. So for the next 10 minutes, choose to be present. Everything else will be waiting for you when you're done. Take a deep breath in, and as you exhale,
Starting point is 00:01:57 slowly close your eyes. Take this first moment just to allow yourself to settle into a meditative state. When we meditate, the mind softens. And this allows us a deeper sense of peace, calm and acceptance. And the state of the mind will follow the state of the body.
Starting point is 00:02:42 So to help calm your mind, soften your face, drop your jaw, and relax your shoulders down. And for the next 30 seconds or so, just follow the natural rise and fall of your own breath as you do. It will take you deeper and deeper within. Now that you're nice and settled in, bring to mind the last time that you were angry or scared. It doesn't have to be anything grand, but just try to see that scene in your mind. Relive that moment.
Starting point is 00:04:34 Remember why you had that feeling of fear or anger. Remember the tension you felt in your body in your mind. Remember all of the unknowns swirling around in your head. And as you sit here,
Starting point is 00:05:26 reliving this moment, recognize that your feeling of fear or anger came from a place of self-preservation. there was some aspect of your identity, be it physical or emotional, that you were trying to protect. And that's where your fear, where your anger came from. This is your ego at work, your fears, your anger, and sometimes your sadness too.
Starting point is 00:06:19 your ego does not define you, though it is a part of you. It's a part of you that you can recognize, you can identify, and you can let go of, you can make peace with this part of yourself, and coexist happily. So take a deep breath in, filling up with this natural sense of self-refering up with this natural sense of self-reveillance. preservation you have, filling up with appreciation for your ego. And on your exhale, let go of all of the ways in which your ego does not serve you. All of those moments when self-preservation isn't necessary,
Starting point is 00:07:30 once more, and collect appreciation for your ego, your sense of self-preservation. And exhale, release, and make peace with this part of yourself, knowing that you are larger than it. It does not control you. Rather, it's the other way around. And recognize the ways and the times that your ego does not serve you. Many times, it gets all fired up when you're not actually in any danger. So here and now, thank your ego for the instinct that it has and tell it that you will rely on it, but only in those moments where you truly need it.
Starting point is 00:09:18 All right, you can let that visual go and just bring yourself back to your breath for about 30 seconds before we wrap up. It's time to wrap up our meditation now. To begin to bring yourself back. Notice whatever's going on around you. Any sounds in the room and the air on your skin. Notice whatever's supporting you, whether that's a chair or the floor. Take a deep breath in. And as you exhale, slowly open your eyes and take a second to gather yourself.
Starting point is 00:10:56 So I hope you enjoyed that meditation and that it helped you find a little bit of peace with this very deep part of yourself, your ego. The ego is a really tricky beast. It feeds off of our fears, our fear of change, our fear of not having enough, our fear of not knowing. And in its wake, we find pain. We find that we're scared. and we find that we become very defensive.
Starting point is 00:11:28 What's really tough about the ego is that the instinct behind it is in a good place. The ego wants to keep us safe and protected, away from harm. But so many times it gets activated and we're not actually in harm's way. Rather, we might just be confronted with an idea that's new to us or disrupts some understanding we have of ourselves or the world. And in those cases, we don't need to be defensive. We just need to be open and analytical and thoughtful. So hopefully, after practicing this meditation, you'll be able to achieve that balance
Starting point is 00:12:10 the next time you are confronted with a new idea or being wrong about something. It doesn't mean you're a bad person, and it definitely doesn't mean you're worthless or stupid. But that's all for today. Tomorrow I'll be back with positive affirmations on this same topic, so I hope to see you there. Until then, go out and have a fantastic day.
