Good morning and welcome to Wake Me Up. I'm Tyler, your host as always. Friends, one of the most important things to finding joy and happiness each day is focus, being able to drive our attention toward the things we want. yet it's something that can be elusive to all of us at times. To some degree, focus is a skill.
Starting point is 00:00:39 We can practice and improve our ability to focus, which can help us to keep our attention on the things we want, away from the things we don't want, and to help us quickly knock out those pesky, annoying little tasks that we all have to do. So focus is what we'll work on today. But first, let's pause for, For just a moment, take a couple of deep breaths just to collect ourselves before the day begins. So wherever you are, take a deep breath in, fill all the way into your belly, hold it for just a second, and exhale.
Starting point is 00:01:24 Let it all go. No need to force it, just let it fall out. Inhale again, even deeper this time. Hold and release. Now if you're in bed, go ahead and roll over. Make your way to standing up. All right. Now that we're all up and out of bed, let's get started with our meditation.
Starting point is 00:02:05 So find a comfortable seat anywhere in your home. Grab a sip of water or do anything like that along the way. I do recommend sitting down for this meditation because we will be shifting our attention through different parts of the body. So it will really help if you sit down, because it will reduce distractions and allow you to do this meditation more effectively. Now, just a quick note, I try to be as inclusive as I can, but with this particular meditation, it's really hard for me to account for all of the different kinds and shapes of humans enjoying this show. So if I direct your attention in any way that doesn't work for you, please take it. Take the liberty to adjust to another part of your body.
Starting point is 00:02:53 It doesn't really matter which body parts you use for this. The point is just a practice shifting your attention. So any body part will do. We're all seated. Let's get started. Allow yourself to relax into your seat, but maintain a good sense of support. Take a big breath in and on your exhale,
Starting point is 00:03:28 just gently close your eyes. Take this first moment just to get comfortable. Allow your face to soften. Allow your shoulders to drop down. Release your tongue from the top of your mouth. And let it just sink along with your jaw. Follow your breath at whatever natural pace works for you. For the first 30 seconds or so.
Starting point is 00:04:40 All right. Now that you're settled in. Turn your attention to the crown of your head. just sensing whatever's going on there. Now move that attention to your shoulders. Shift to your hands. Now bring your attention to your chest. Again, just noticing anything that's going on there.
Starting point is 00:05:24 No need to label or assign a meaning. Move your attention to your hips now. To your knees, to your feet, and all the way back up. Knees, hips, chest. hands, shoulders, and the top of your head. Now release your attention, let your mind go wherever it wants to. We'll come back, and we'll do that again, a little bit faster. Okay, draw your attention to the crown of your head.
Starting point is 00:07:21 Doing the same thing as we did before, just sensing. Now to your shoulders, to your hands, chest, to your hips, to your knees, and to your feet. Now let's work our way back up. So shift to the knees and to the hips, up to your chest, out to your hands, your shoulders,
Starting point is 00:08:35 and back to the top of your head. Again, release your attention. Just let your mind wander for a second. We're going to do that one last time. And again, it'll be just a notch faster. All right, bring your attention to the crown of your head. to your shoulders, to your hands, to your chest, to your hips, knees, feet, back to the knees, hips, chest, hands, shoulders, and head. Fantastic. Let your mind wander for just another 30 seconds or so.
Starting point is 00:10:13 Let it go anywhere at once. Just give it some time to unwind. Okay, friends, it's time to wrap up our meditation. To begin to bring yourself back to the room. Notice the air on your skin. Notice whatever's supporting your body. Take one last, really big inhale, the deepest one yet. And on your exhale, slowly open your eyes and just gather yourself. So I hope you see the value in this meditation by consciously directing our attention
Starting point is 00:11:42 and shifting it between different points. We're training our focus. Now this is a practice. If you do it once, it's not going to do much for you. But if you repeat it, then you'll get better and better and better. There are a lot of variations in different ways to introduce difficulty and nuance to this kind of practice. So if you're interested in improving your focus,
Starting point is 00:12:09 I'm starting to put together a course which will train and help you with that. Right now, I'm starting to outline the course, but I want to collect some information. So if you're interested, check out the link in the show notes to fill out a survey about the course. Give me some of your thoughts and desires for training like this so that I can make it exactly what you'd like. Well, that's all for now. Thank you so much for listening, and I hope you found value from this episode. I'll talk to you soon, and until then, go out, take care of yourself, and have an absolutely fantastic day.
