Now before our episode begins, here's a quick word from our sponsors. Hey there, and welcome back to Wake Me Up. Today, we have a really lovely meditation that will help you manage the ups and downs of life. And keeping an even balance through all of the good and bad moments is really just about clear, objective thinking. And one of the major keys to maintaining this balance is not rushing to judgment or reacting to everything that you hear or see. While the events of life do play a role in upsetting us,
Starting point is 00:00:59 a much larger part of what turns us upside down is our own judgment and evaluation of those events. These elaborate stories we tell ourselves about the experiences of our life, that's what really troubles us. And so today, in this meditation, we'll work on figuring out a better way to rewrite those stories and see those events, so that we're non-reactive and non-judgmental,
Starting point is 00:01:26 and we can maintain an even keel through it all. So go ahead and find a comfortable position. Any way that you like to meditate works just fine. Most importantly, we just don't want the body to be a distraction. And once you've found that position, allow yourself to relax and just settle in. Take a deep breath, fill all the way into your belly, and as you exhale, slowly close your eyes. Take this first moment just to settle in.
Starting point is 00:02:20 By relaxing your body, you can also relax your mind. So start by relaxing your face, just letting go of all of those facial muscles, and then drop your jaw. And finally, soften your shoulders down. First moment, just follow the natural rise and fall of your own breath. And as you do, you'll draw deeper and deeper within. Hopefully you're nice and settled in now. So let's really begin our meditation. And all we're going to do is practice non-judgment, non-reactivity to a difficult problem
Starting point is 00:03:48 you've faced in life recently. So begin by bringing to my mind. a recent problem or difficulty that you faced in life, work, school, our relationship, really any area of your life works. And just bring that problem to mind. Remember what happened and try to relive that moment. And as you do this, notice what feelings or emotions come up. Simply notice them.
Starting point is 00:04:43 Try not to label them or assign a meaning or a cause. Just take note. And also try to notice if there is a physical sensation with this too. Not just a collection of thoughts, but a physical reaction. Now, as you know, there are tons of problems in the world and plenty in your own life. So what is it that made you really feel this problem? What made it sting? It's likely that you had a reaction to this problem
Starting point is 00:05:55 because you have a strong attachment to some part of it, an attachment that you, for some reason, couldn't control every aspect of. So take a moment and figure out and acknowledge what that attachment is. and maybe there's even more than one. Attachment might be anything. It might be a story or a belief you have about yourself or someone else. It might be to a thing or a person or a way of living life.
Starting point is 00:06:51 Recognize that this attachment, this problem, arose in your own mind. Others may see. see it as a problem too, but the pain you feel is a creation of your mind. So acknowledge here and now that if you are pained by an external source, it is not that external thing that's causing pain, but your own attachment, your own reaction, and best of all, it is in your power to, to wipe out that attachment and that judgment right now. So choose in this moment to release whatever feelings or attachments you have, which created
Starting point is 00:08:02 this pain and this problem in your mind. You cannot change the direction of the wind. Just like you cannot change the actions of others, what you can change and what you do control, is your own reaction. So control what you can, yourself. Don't let external things control you by affecting your emotions. So right now, take a deep breath and collect all of the feelings and all of the attachments you have that have created this problem in your mind, and then exhale and release
Starting point is 00:09:00 them. Let go of their control. over you. And release with them the need to know why, the need for an answer or a resolution, the need to fix
Starting point is 00:09:15 a problem that is not your own. Once more now. Inhale, collecting all of those feelings and attachments that have created this problem. And on your exhale, release into the wind, any narratives,
Starting point is 00:09:40 any judgments, any expectations, any attachments. You can let all of that go and just let your mind wander freely for a moment before we wrap up. It's time to wrap up now. So begin to bring yourself back. Notice whatever supporting you.
Starting point is 00:10:34 Notice the air on your skin. Take a deep breath in. And as you exhale, slowly open your eyes and just take a second to get you. gather yourself. So I hope you enjoyed that meditation and that you're feeling a weight off your shoulders. My friend, you deal with problems all the time. As a human, that's what you do. You're a problem solver. But most of those problems don't really bother you. You just take care of them and
Starting point is 00:11:22 move on. So when you find yourself overly worried, anxious, or concerned about something, Do what we just did here. Try to observe the thoughts that are occurring in your mind. I'm confident that if you dive into these thoughts, you will notice a strong sense of attachment to the feeling or reaction or the story that's going on, as if it's part of your own identity. And for whatever reason, outside forces can unconsciously cause us trouble.
Starting point is 00:12:00 even if consciously we don't want to be controlled by them. So to release that control, we have to let go of the attachment. Simply acknowledge the feeling and remember that it's separate from who you are as a person. You define your own existence. And to do that, you have to let go of your judgments, both of yourself and of others. you have to let go of your reactions, again, both to yourself and others. And if you can do that, simply by repeating the technique in this meditation, you will find more happiness, more freedom, and more joy every day in your life.
Starting point is 00:12:50 And I really would love to see that in you. So that's all for this episode. Thank you so much for listening. I hope you found it helpful. Until next time, go out and have an absolutely fantastic day.
