Good morning, everybody.
And welcome to Wake Me Up, the podcast, where morning people are made.
I'm so glad that you've tuned in and joined me here this morning.
As I'm sure we all can agree, life can be hectic sometimes.
With a world of chaos, negative news, and conflict constantly swirling around us,
it can be hard to stay positive and focused on what's most important to us.
Today's meditation will help you practice the skill of ignoring all of the noise around you
so that you can remain vigilant in the pursuit of your own happiness.
Before we begin, I want to give a very special shout out to Alana
for joining the Wake Me Up Patreon community.
Thanks, Alana, for your support of the show.
All right, now let's get started.
Whether you're joining from bed or you're up and Adam already,
let's all take a big breath in.
Hold it for just a second at the top.
And then exhale, you can just let it all go.
If you are still in bed, then go ahead and roll over and make your way to standing up.
There's a full day of opportunity lying ahead, so let's not waste it in bed.
Before we sit down, let's quickly prepare the body for meditation.
Take the next 30 seconds or so, and just listen to your body.
Do whatever stretches or loosening up that you want, whether that's rolling at your shoulder,
or your neck, taking a full forward fold, or a combination of other things.
Now, finish up your stretches, grab a sip of water if you need a little hydration, and then
find your way to a nice comfortable seat.
It can be anywhere in your home, just not in your bed.
As I said before, today's meditation is designed to help you ignore whatever is going on
around you, so that you can remain focused on your own goals and happiness.
The sources and opportunities for distraction in the modern world are seemingly infinite.
We receive a ton of information these days, a lot of which is negative.
Have you ever noticed that if you put away your phone, stay off of social media, and just
enjoy a day by yourself, all of a sudden, your mood will often.
be more positive. You'll feel more inspired and more excited about the prospects of life.
Well, that's because happiness comes from within, not from without. So too does focus. Today's meditation
takes a very simple approach to improve our ability to ignore the noise around us. So let's get
started. You should have found a comfortable seat by now. And you want to be
be nice and sturdy, sitting upright, but allow yourself to relax down.
Drop your shoulders.
Let your arms and hands relax.
Now take a deep breath in, and as you exhale, just close your eyes.
So as you settle in, make sure you're comfortable.
Let everything continue to soften.
Your face, your jaw, your mind.
Let's take one big breath.
together, inhaling and filling all the way up into the belly.
Hold it at the top.
And then on your exhale, let it go.
Don't force the air out or try to control it.
Just let your lungs release that air.
Follow your breath for just a moment and allow it to draw you deeper and deeper.
So now that you're settled in, take note of what's going on around you.
There will be sounds, even if they're very subtle and low and low.
volume. There might be traffic, a fan buzzing, or even your pet moving around the house. There might
be other things, too, like a light shining in the room, that you can see glowing behind your
eyelids. All of these things lie beyond your own body. Outside of your skin. Imagine that you
have a dial, a knob to turn down the volume on all of these outside things.
and slowly just turn that dial down,
letting the outside world become quieter and dimmer.
And as you turn it down,
your attention is left with only one place to go,
yourself, the sensations of your body,
the thoughts in your mind.
Throughout this meditation,
the outside world will continue going on.
there will be sounds and there will be interruptions.
Every time one of those outside interruptions arises
and your focus is drawn away from yourself,
simply return your attention back to you.
It doesn't matter whether you're focusing on your own body
or your breath or just letting your thoughts run,
as long as the attention is on you.
So at some point, an interruption is bound to arise.
and that's okay.
Don't be frustrated by it.
Don't be angry if your attention gets drawn away.
Instead, be grateful for the opportunity
to practice the skill of focusing on yourself.
Thank that disruption,
and then return your focus to you,
whether it's your breath, your body, or your thoughts.
It doesn't really matter as long as it's you.
We'll continue for another.
moment or so, just focusing on the self, enjoying that personal time. And just remember to
return to yourself anytime there's an outside distraction. Now return to that dial, that knob
that controls the volume of the outside world, and slowly begin to turn it back up to its
normal level. Notice the sounds becoming more present around you. Notice the air in the room,
touching your skin.
Feel the chair beneath you
and your feet on the floor.
You can give your fingers and toes
a little wiggle.
And then take a deep breath in,
again filling all the way into your belly.
And as you exhale and just let all of that air go,
you can open your eyes
and just take this moment to gather yourself.
Well, friends, I hope you enjoyed that personal time.
It's so important to focus on oneself.
As I said before, happiness comes from within, not from without.
Many positive feelings have roots in the self as well,
fulfillment and confidence to name a few.
External sources of happiness are way less reliable.
They falter and they fade.
And usually it's the external things that cause us the most suffering.
While I don't advocate loneliness,
I do advocate prioritizing yourself.
And that means learning to be fulfilled by time spent alone.
Think about it this way.
If you are completely happy hanging out with yourself for a while,
then you don't need anyone or anything else.
Of course, you may want others, but you don't need them.
And that's a very important distinction.
Because if you need others, then you will settle for those,
who are not a positive force in your life.
You will succumb to the power of loneliness,
which will inevitably bring negative people into your life.
But if you don't need others,
you just want the enjoyment of them,
then you will be more selective with how you spend your time,
who you spend it with,
and overall, you'll surround yourself
with sources of positivity rather than negativity.
Well, that's all I've got for today, friends.
I really hope you enjoyed that meditation
and that you're clear of mind and excited for this day.
I have one really small request before you head off.
