Good morning friends and welcome to Wake Me Up, the podcast where morning people are made.
I'm Tyler, your host, and I'm so glad to have you here with me today.
Now, most of the time on this show, I tried to lift you up and remind you of all the positive
things in life. But I'm human too and I recognize that we all go through difficult
moments. We all deal with pain, physical and emotional. And so occasionally I want to do
episodes that help you deal with these negative aspects of life too. So in that vein,
today's episode is a meditation specifically designed to help you deal with pain. We all
have pain and I'm no stranger to it myself. You don't need to have a serious injury to benefit
from this meditation. It can be helpful for any kind of pain you might be in, a passing cold,
a sprained ankle, or even discomfort from your menstrual cycle. I think you'll find that this technique
is really simple, but also really effective if you do it routinely. So I encourage you to come back
and do it again.
I want to specifically thank Jennifer
for reaching out and requesting this episode.
I hope you know that you can always reach me
and request an episode
or give any feedback about the show
either by contacting me through the website
or send me a message on Instagram.
You can find links to both of those
in the show notes.
And finally, before we get started,
I want to thank Shivani
for signing up for the Wake Me Up Patreon community
and supporting this show.
So thank you, Chivani.
Now, let's go ahead and get started.
All right, so we'll begin this meditation
like we do with every single other one on this show.
By finding a nice comfortable seat,
anywhere in your home, just don't sit in your bed.
And once you've found that seat,
make sure you're sitting upright,
but you want to allow everything to relax.
So let your shoulders relax down.
Let your face soften.
But make sure to keep your spine erect as best as you can.
All right, let's take a deep breath in,
hold it at the top for just a second.
And then exhale, let it all go, nice and smooth.
And let's do one more like that together.
So inhale, hold it at the top, and then let it all go.
And on this last one, we'll close our eyes as we exhale.
So inhale, hold it at the top, and exhale.
Close your eyes.
And just allow yourself to settle in here for a second.
And since this meditation is really going to focus on the breath,
why don't you start by doing that now?
It doesn't need to be anything special.
But just simply making sure that each breath is full and deep.
all the way into your belly.
Simply follow those deep belly breaths in and out.
All right, now that you're nice and settled in,
and you've gotten comfortable with those big belly breaths,
shift your attention to the area of your body
where you are experiencing a sensation of pain,
and just let your attention rest there.
Don't try to force it in,
Don't try to change anything.
Just let it rest there.
Collect information about what's going on.
And you don't need to try to assign a cause to this pain.
This meditation isn't to figure out why you're in pain.
It's just to help ease the sensation of that pain.
So don't judge yourself.
Don't judge the pain.
Just rest your attention on it for a moment while you continue to take those big belly breaths.
And though I know this sounds a little counterintuitive,
send a little thank you to that sense of pain you're experiencing,
appreciating that your body has sensations to help you with something.
To give you information,
thank your body and your mind for giving you the same.
for giving you this information.
And now as you continue to take those big belly breaths,
visualize sending the air you're breathing in
to that area of pain in your body.
As you breathe in, direct the air to that area.
And as you exhale, collect just a little bit of that pain
and blow it out of your body.
Release it.
With each breath, you can excavate a little bit more of that pain
and let it go on the exhale.
And as you take these breaths, sending them to the area of pain,
recognize what you're telling your body to do,
to send resources, to send love,
to send a little bit of extra care to this part of your body
that might need it right now.
Be gentle.
be understanding.
Be supportive of this part of your body.
And with each big belly breath you send to that area of pain,
you might begin to feel a sense of lightness coming to that area,
a sense of that tension beginning to release.
Give that part of your body permission to relax,
to accept the extra bit of nurturing and care.
care that you're sending its way right now, and to allow itself to be healed, to be open to the
possibility that you can feel better, and now that you've been taking these big belly breaths
for a few moments, you may be starting to ease that tension more and more. Feel the ease spreading
from that area of pain, and notice how that when this area begins to feel.
feel just a little bit better. The rest of your body can be at ease even more. Your mind can be
more relaxed, less tense. All right, let's take a few last big belly breaths together, directing them with
all of your focus and all of your love and care to that area that's experiencing some discomfort.
So inhale as deep as you possibly can.
Hold it and let it collect in that area of pain before exhaling, removing some of that pain with the breath.
Once more now, inhale, sending it to that area, holding it there, and then exhaling and letting everything relax.
Now you can let your focus drift away from that area of pain.
Let it rest on the breath for just a moment
and see if you can allow yourself to relax,
to sit comfortably for this last moment.
All right, begin to bring yourself back to the room now,
noticing the chair beneath you and your feet on the floor.
Maybe there's some sounds going on in the room around you
and give your fingers and toes a little wiggle,
just to bring some life back into your body.
And let's take one more big breath in,
hold it at the top,
and as you exhale, slowly open your eyes,
and just take this moment to come out of that meditation
and gather yourself.
My friends, I know that being in pain is uncomfortable.
I have experienced it myself,
and I feel for any of you who are experiencing discomfort right now.
But know that what I said in this meditation
is true. Pain is simply a sensory experience, just like everything else you experience in life.
It's information gathered by your body and sent to your brain to tell you something,
to give you something useful that you can work with and improve yourself with.
So don't be afraid of your pain. Listen to it. Learn from it. And when you are feeling pain or discomfort,
Know that it means your body is asking for just a little bit more love and care.
Remember, before you can give love and care to anyone else, you have to be able to give it to yourself.
So if you are in pain or discomfort today, take this opportunity to take care of yourself.
You deserve it, and I hope you give it to yourself.
Now, that's all I've got for today.
If you are in pain, I hope you're feeling just a little bit more comfortable after this meditation.
