Starting point is 00:00:01 If you'd like to enjoy Wake Me Up completely ad-free and get access to exclusive bonus content, check out the link in the show notes for the Wake Me Up premium feed. Hey there, welcome to Wake Me Up. I'm your host, Tyler, as always, and I'm so thrilled that you're here. This week, we'll be doing a series of episodes on perfectionism, how we can let go of it and get past the limitations that it puts on us. Perfectionism is the killer of productivity and happiness, but it's something that most of us struggle with in one way or another
Starting point is 00:00:39 because we want to put our best out there, and that's totally reasonable. The issue arises when we never put ourselves out there because we're worried that it won't be our best. But the reality is, very few days do we actually perform at our true best. In fact, the meaning of the word, best implies that you may only be at your best a few times in life. How would a professional athlete,
Starting point is 00:01:07 artist, speaker, or leader get anywhere if they didn't just go out and do it? For example, go look at the music by a legendary band. Actually look at their whole catalog. You'll recognize you probably only know a few of their songs. And that's just among the songs that they've publicly released. The same is true for artists. You might know the Mona Lisa, but I bet you don't know every single one of Leonardo da Vinci's works of art. I know I sure don't. You see, the greats become great because they put pen to paper over and over and over.
Starting point is 00:01:48 They show up and they just do it. So today, we're going to do a meditation that will help us do the same by releasing those doubts and fears which hold us back from chasing our dreams. Let's go ahead and get started. So find a comfortable position anywhere in your home will do. As you probably know, I recommend sitting up while you meditate. But I recognize that we all have different preferences and different spaces. So do whatever works best for you.
Starting point is 00:02:28 The most important thing is that the body isn't a distract. And once you've found that comfortable position, take a deep breath in and on your exhale, just slowly close your eyes. Take this first moment just to get comfortable and a few things that can help with that. Are softening your face, releasing your jaw and relaxing your shoulders down. And for this first moment or so, just follow the natural rise and fall of your own breath. You can go at whatever pace feels right to you. And as you follow that breath, you'll slowly begin to draw deeper and deeper within.
Starting point is 00:03:52 All right, now that you're nice and settled in, bring to mind something that you're currently working on, a goal or a project, something for which you hold yourself to very high standards, something that you'd really like to go perfectly. And just notice what those standards really are. What are you actually expecting of yourself? Consider whether those standards are realistic for you and for other people
Starting point is 00:05:48 and try to reformulate your definition of success. What is it that you're really seeking from this goal? or this project, what would actually make you feel like you succeeded? Ask yourself, if this didn't go perfectly, what's the worst that could actually happen? And hopefully that brings you back to reality a bit. Your life and the world aren't going to end if this project or this goal doesn't go exactly as you planned. In fact, the way you plan for it to go may not even be the best way that it could go for you. So what would happen if you just put yourself out there and
Starting point is 00:07:58 saw what came of it? Explore those possibilities for a moment right now. All right, now you can let go of all of that. Just bring yourself back to your breath for this last moment or so. All right, it's about time to wrap up our meditation now. So begin to bring yourself back. Notice whatever's supporting you, whether it's a chair or the floor or something else. Notice any sounds going on around you. Take a deep breath in, fill all the way up, and as you exhale, slowly open your eyes and just collect yourself. So I hope you enjoyed that meditation.
Starting point is 00:10:08 and I hope you're feeling a little bit freer to just be yourself and put yourself out there. I'm going to let you in on a little secret. The world has a bit of amnesia. Remember what I said about the catalogs of great musicians and artists at the beginning of the episode? People tend to know only their greatest hits. So if you do something, that's not your best. It's likely that nobody will even notice. And I myself can vouch for this.
Starting point is 00:10:40 If you don't believe me, go back and listen to the very first episode of Wake Me Up. I was such a bad narrator. It pains me to listen to it. And I'm not the best in the world now, but I am a lot better. And that just goes to show you've got to put pen to paper, repeat, and put yourself out there. That's how you grow. And remember that you're doing it today. because it means you'll be even better tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:11:12 So care less and do more. It's that process of reiteration that allows for growth. And it brings you that step closer to being perfect, even though we'll never actually reach it. Now that's all for this episode. We'll be back tomorrow for our motivational episode on this same theme. So I hope to see you there. Until then, go out.
Starting point is 00:11:39 Care way less, do way more, and have an absolutely fantastic day.
