Now before our episode begins, here's a quick word from our sponsors. Hey there, and welcome to Wake Me Up. In our quest for happiness, we often look to external sources, material wealth, success, or the approval of others. However, nearly all impactful teachings, from the major religions to the great Greek philosophers,
Starting point is 00:00:43 tell us that happiness has to be found in a different way. In this episode, I've done my best to distill guidance on the search for happiness from these different sources into a meaningful mindfulness practice that you can repeat daily. And this practice is based on three core principles that pervade all of these teachings. The first principle is inner harmony,
Starting point is 00:01:12 being good to yourself, having self-awareness, being content with who you are. That means not worrying about what others think of you, avoiding comparison and having the courage to be yourself authentically. At its very core, inner harmony means taking care of yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The second principle is outer harmony, being good to others and the world around you,
Starting point is 00:01:46 treating others with respect and fairness, not judging them or hating them because they're different, and avoiding harm to them and the world around you. The third principle I'm calling contribution, which means offering something that's unique about you to the world and doing what you can to make sure the world becomes a better place. So let's put these principles into practice now. Find a quiet, peaceful place where you're not going to be distracted.
Starting point is 00:02:22 I recommend doing this sitting down, but of course you can do this while walking or really in any position at all. Take a deep breath in and as you exhale let go of any tension in your body. If you'd like to close your eyes, you can do that now too.
Starting point is 00:02:52 And just take a second to relax. Whatever else may be grasping for your attention, allow it to fade away. You'll have plenty of time to attend to it when you're done with this practice. For now, It's time to focus on your own happiness and well-being. So turn your attention inward.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Select on who you are, on yourself, with a sense of kindness and self-compassion. Embrace who you are and where you're at in life at this very moment. Go of any judgments or any comparisons to others. They don't matter. You are unique. Your path is your own. and you are valuable just as you are. Visualize a warm, soothing light that surrounds you.
Starting point is 00:04:24 It wraps you in love and acceptance. And imagine that light filling every corner of your being, nurturing you physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. The source of this light holds all the answers you'll ever seek, and that source is you. So repeat to yourself, I am enough, just as I am. Embrace my authentic self.
Starting point is 00:05:35 I treat my mind, body, and spirit. With respect, love. Now shift your focus to the world around you. You can still keep your eyes closed if they were. Doesn't matter. Acknowledge the interdependence of all life. See the links. that tie you to everything else around you,
Starting point is 00:06:28 how your life is dependent on other things and other beings. As you notice, these connections, this interdependence, appreciate them for what they're offering to you. And in return, send that warm, soothing light that comes from you out to them, sending that same love and respect you have for yourself out to everything else and everyone else.
Starting point is 00:07:49 Repeat to yourself, I am a force for good in the world. I treat others and the world around me with respect, love, and care. And finally, envision this world around you as the world you, you hope it could become. We all see things in the world that we wish were better, we wish we're different, we wish would change.
Starting point is 00:08:48 So see that world you hope for now. Imagine it. Envision it. Consider what you can do to help bring about that world you hope for. Identify a specific act or contribution that resonanty that resonates,
Starting point is 00:09:26 with you, something simple that you can do today to make this world a better place for everyone. Repeat to yourself, I am a source of positive change. My contributions make the world a better place. Now let's take one more deep breath just to close out that practice. So inhale, filling all the way up, deepest breath you've taken yet today. Then exhale, release. And if you had your eyes closed, then now is a great time to go ahead and reopen them.
Starting point is 00:10:46 As we close out this practice and turn towards the opportunity of a new day, remember that happiness is not a destination, but a lifelong journey. It starts within, through personal cultivation, as you've done just now. So as you return to your day, carry these three core principles of inner harmony, outer harmony, and contribution with you.
Starting point is 00:11:15 Try to be aware of them and implement them in your life wherever you can. It's important to note that without inner harmony, the other two just aren't going to happen that well. So start with yourself. Start with that person you see in the mirror. They deserve love, respect, and care. And if you can show that to them, then you have the skills and the tools
Starting point is 00:11:41 to show it to everyone else in the world around you too. So I hope you enjoyed this episode. And if you did, please take a second to leave a comment or review and let me know. I hope to see you back here soon on Wake Me Up. And until next time, go out and have a fantastic day.
