Now before our episode begins, here's a quick word from our sponsors.
Hey, and welcome to Wake Me Up. I'm Tyler, your host, and I'm so glad that you're here today.
This week, we're going to be talking about something that's often really difficult,
accepting the truth about ourselves.
And while it may seem like the kind of thing you don't want to think about,
first thing in the morning,
know that we are going to approach this through a compassionate lens.
So there's no need to recoil.
The hardest truth to accept is always the truth about yourself,
because it takes courage and objectivity to look inward.
And that's why being compassionate is so essential to this process.
When you can start looking at yourself honestly,
with understanding and compassion,
then you can really start to understand who you are
and you can begin to make changes for the better.
So that's what we'll be working on this week.
Before we dive in today,
Just take one moment to pause.
Inhale and fill up with a deep breath.
Hold it at the top and then exhale and let go.
Once more, inhale and fill all the way up.
Hold and then exhale and release.
Just let all of that air go.
Now, you can return to your morning,
whether that's making coffee, having a stretch, or going for a walk.
whatever it is you like to do.
And while you do that, let's circle back to this idea, accepting the truth about ourselves.
Many of us know our weaknesses.
We know what we need to work on, but we aren't willing to feel the discomfort,
whether it's shame, responsibility, or letting go that comes with changing.
It's usually either that or we have blind spots about ourselves.
Having high self-awareness comes with being willing to look at the parts of you that may make you feel ashamed.
And a lot of us don't know what to do when that shame comes up.
We aren't used to looking at ourselves from a place of compassion rather than judgment.
So it's easy to see how not doing the inner work necessary keeps us in a cycle.
The thing about avoidance is that it creates the human.
illusion that it's easier to not do the work. When we avoid going inward and working to understand
and change ourselves, we're actually making it much more difficult in the long run. These patterns
affect the filter through which we see the world. They can affect the way we show up in our
relationships with others and with ourselves, and they can erode how we view the potential of our
lives. Think about someone who's a workaholic, for example. They might even be totally aware
that they're a workaholic, but they don't feel a strong enough incentive to change it. At the
same time, they don't feel like the workaholic version is the best version of themselves,
but they're stuck in the comfort of that cycle. The illusion is that their emphasis on one
quality, working hard, propels them forward. But it's actually holding them back from so many
experiences and qualities of a meaningful life. If they'd simply work through the discomfort of
reconditioning old patterns, then they'd experience so much more pleasure on the other side
of doing the work. There's a lot of emotional resistance that comes up when we start to see
the truth in ourselves. Looking at every part, fly.
laws and all makes us uncomfortable.
The key to moving through this discomfort is to approach it with compassion.
We often forget that responding with compassion is always an option, rather than feeding
those cycles of shame and judgment.
But that shame and judgment and unknowing is what keeps us avoiding the inner work we need
to do to move forward.
We aren't sure of what we'll have to come.
in front, and we don't want to step out of our comfort space to find out.
But remember this.
The true comfort comes on the other side of doing the work.
That's when we get to feel authentic acceptance of ourselves, not just acceptance of some parts.
When you've looked at every part of yourself, even the parts you're most ashamed of,
and you've given compassion, understanding, and permission to change, you get to
experience the fullness of you. And doing that work is most definitely worth it. So, let's do
some self-reflection. Think of one behavior or thought pattern that you feed into,
which isn't serving you or your relationships anymore. And take an honest look at the first thing
that comes to mind. Have you simply been overlooking it? Or have you been avoiding making that
change? Are you willing to sit with this part of yourself long enough to extend compassion
and allow for change? And what's one thing you can do to begin the process of transforming it?
My friend, the habits that aren't serving you or others in your life are able to be changed
more easily than it may seem. Even just acknowledging that they exist and that they have an
effect on your life helps to start the process. Your habits, thoughts, and feelings may have been
caused by something external, which led to your internal discomfort or perceived flaw. But your peace
is still in your own hands. The longer we point to the external things that fuel our internal
qualities, the longer we keep those qualities alive. We become even more stuck in the
in our ways and farther from the future we hope for.
Remember, you don't have to make a giant change all at once.
Lasting change happens slowly, step by step.
That's why it's so important to recognize what's serving you
and what's keeping you stagnant.
Here are some more thoughts to help you sort it out.
Do you feel good about yourself when you're doing that being,
or thinking that thought.
Do others feel good about you doing it?
Or perhaps do you hide it from them?
What would feel uncomfortable about making that change?
And what can you do to help yourself feel more comfortable while you make the change?
If you're willing to start conversations like this with yourself,
you will change faster and more easily than you could ever believe.
When you shift your attitude towards feeling curious rather than judgmental,
you can explore yourself with less resistance.
If shame comes up, have a kind conversation with yourself.
You can even say, I wonder what part of me is asking for transformation.
I wonder what I've been avoiding, that I can fully accept about myself now.
My friend, it usually feels easy.
to stay the same than to change.
But that is the illusion.
Tension is the feeling of not being or accepting yourself.
And relaxation and happiness come when you can fully be who you are.
So I encourage you to be honest with yourself
and what you want to change about who you are or the life you're living.
When we react to ourselves with shame and judgment,
we avoid change.
But when we are willing to witness every part of ourselves,
we give permission to shed those old patterns
and in their place bloom new, better, more beautiful ones.
Well, that's all for today's episode.
Thanks so much for tuning in and joining me here this morning.
I'll be back tomorrow for a meditation on this same theme,
so I hope to see you there.
And until then, go out and have an absolutely fantastic day.
