Hi there, and welcome to Wake Me Up.
I'm Tyler, your host as always.
This week, we've been talking about compassion and trying to develop a deeper sense of it.
In today's motivation, we'll break down some barriers that often hold us back from being more compassionate,
both to others and ourselves.
And we'll see how much better the world could be
if we all brought a little more compassion.
If you're still in bed,
then I'd recommend starting with Monday's Wake Up and Stretch episode,
which will get you up and going,
and then you can come back here to get motivated if you'd like.
But no matter where you are, or whatever you're doing,
just pause for a moment
and bring to mind something that you think
you deserve to receive some compassion for.
A tough circumstance in your life,
or a burden you've had to bear.
Something that should give people a reason
to be more understanding of you.
The thing is, we've all had an unfortunate roll of the dice somehow.
And for that, you deserve a bit of understanding,
a little leeway.
So grant that to yourself right now.
Turn inward and say, I know you're struggling.
So I grant you the time and space to deal with that.
And I'll help however I can.
It feels nice to hear that, doesn't it?
So take a deep breath in and fill with compassion for yourself.
Hold it at the top.
And then exhale, release.
Let's do that once more now.
Inhale, hold it at the top, and release.
Now feel free to go about your morning routine.
Make your coffee, have a stretch or go for a walk, whatever you like to do.
And while you do that, let's talk about some barriers that often hold us back from being more compassionate.
Like so many things, we have to give compassion to ourselves before we're really able to give it to others.
That means we've got to be understanding of our own struggles.
No trying to shove them down and avoid them like the plague.
Try to recognize what you're going through in life.
And be willing to give yourself what you need to deal with that and to heal from it.
Whatever it might be, whether that's a bit of self-care, talking to your therapist,
or just taking a day off to do something you enjoy.
Now that doesn't mean you should sulk and give up on everything when you're struggling.
But it does mean that you're not a robot.
You are an emotional being, and you deserve the time and space to do the processing necessary
to deal with whatever's going on.
It's actually more efficient to do that instead of trying to ignore it.
You see, trying to avoid it will just lead the problem to fester and grow.
Though it might be out of sight for a little while, at some point in the future,
it will rear its ugly head and cause more problems.
and I bet that will be exactly at the moment you don't want it to show up again.
So show yourself some compassion.
Try to be understanding of your trials and tribulations.
Help yourself out.
Be patient with your own growth.
And give yourself what you need to succeed.
Once we've learned compassion for ourselves,
it becomes a lot easier to turn it towards others.
In fact, it's oftentimes easier for us to show compassion to our loved ones than ourselves.
But what about people we don't know as well?
Acquaintances, people we work with, or even complete strangers.
No doubt, there's someone in your life that causes you headaches.
Maybe it's your boss or your loud neighbor.
Or that person on the interstate who's driving with reckless abandon and putting out,
everyone else in danger.
It can be really hard to show understanding and compassion to people that seem to make our
lives worse.
But we've got to recognize that most people don't want to cause problems for everyone else.
The issue arises because we're all self-interested and our interests often butt heads.
When that happens, try to react by seeking to understand rather than with frustration.
or judgment.
Ask, what might this person be going through
that would cause them to act this way?
Why would they be causing this problem
and not even seem to notice or care?
And you may not ever know the true answer,
but opening the mind in this way
allows compassion to enter the room.
Here's the thing.
We all do stuff that annoys and frustrates other people.
and it might seem like we don't even notice or care.
And truthfully, it's possible that we don't.
We all operate in our own world, and none of us is perfect.
We've all inadvertently been that person who causes a problem.
That doesn't make us bad people, though.
And the same is true for everyone else out there.
Like that person driving recklessly.
Maybe their kid got sick, and now they're late.
for an interview for the job of their dreams.
Or maybe their wife is about to give birth
and they're rushing to the hospital.
Giving others the benefit of the doubt like this
opens the mind to being more compassionate.
And imagine how much better the world would be
if we all gave each other and ourselves
the benefit of the doubt.
What would it be like
if we were all a bit more compassionate?
What if we granted each other a bit more understanding?
Wouldn't we all feel more accepted?
What if we let the person in a rush cut ahead
instead of trying to teach them a lesson?
Wouldn't we all be a bit safer?
What if your boss appreciated
that sometimes we all need a personal day
or that working more hours
doesn't mean you're more effective?
Wouldn't you find a little more enjoy?
in your job?
What if when someone treats us poorly, we didn't get mad at them, but instead we tried to help
them because you only learn to do bad things if they are first done to you.
Wouldn't the world be a little bit more friendly?
This world can exist, but we are all in certain ways preventing it, because we're too focused.
on our individual selves and not our collective self.
When we work together, when we help each other, we all do better.
And that better future starts with each of us, you and me, choosing today to be a bit more
compassionate, choosing to give understanding rather than judgment, choosing to give love
rather than hate.
You want to be treated with compassion, don't you?
I sure do.
So let's commit today to be more compassionate individuals.
It doesn't require anything grand.
Small steps is all it takes.
And once we put out some compassion,
there will be more to go around.
Soon, more and more people will join us
because it feels good.
And all that compassion we put out will come right back to us.
It's a cycle that builds on itself.
And that better, more compassionate world,
it all starts today with you and me.
Well, that's all for this episode, friends.
I hope you're filled with the spirit of compassion,
understanding, and support for each other.
In the end, we're all we've got.
I'll talk to you soon, and until then, go out and have an absolutely fantastic day.
