Hey there, and welcome to Wake Me Up. This week, we've been focusing on connection, trying to deal with feelings of loneliness. There's nothing more important on this topic than recognizing that connection requires effort. You have to get out there. You have to make plans with your friends. You have to say no to things you don't want to do.
Starting point is 00:00:37 So today, we'll zoom in on that. And we'll end by building your self-confidence around your relationships with some affirmations. If you're still in bed, then I'd recommend starting with Monday's Wake Up and Stretch episode, which will get you up and out of bed, and then you can come back here to get motivated if you'd like. But wherever you are, whatever you're doing, just pause for a moment. Think of one person that you're grateful to have in your life. Anybody.
Starting point is 00:01:14 They can play a huge role or not. Take a breath in and on your exhale, send out a silent thank you to that person for being in your life. Think of one more person that you're grateful to have and take another inhale, filling all the way up with appreciation for them. and exhale, send out a silent thank you to them for taking part in your life. You should feel free to go about your morning routine now, making your tea or your coffee,
Starting point is 00:02:16 having a stretch or going for a walk, whatever you like to do with your morning. And while you do that, allow me to be your morning companion. And let's dive into a few concepts regarding connection and relationships. First, all relationships are a two-way street. As dry and unemotional as it sounds, relationships are contractual. They are agreements between people. But these contracts are almost always unspoken, right? You don't talk to your friends and write out the terms of your friendship.
Starting point is 00:02:57 But subconsciously, that is what we do. For example, your agreement with your friend might be, I give you fun and support if you give them back to me. And there are terms that might cause your contract with your friend to end. For example, if they beat you up or steal from you, you won't be their friend anymore. So what can we tell from this? Well, all healthy relationships require effort from both sides.
Starting point is 00:03:28 There's a give and a take from everyone involved. It is a symbiotic relationship, like we see among animals in nature. We both give something of our own to the other, and in return, we mutually benefit. We're both better off than before. So if you're feeling lonely, examine your key relationships. In one or multiple of those relationships, I'd bet that someone is, isn't putting in their side of the effort. And the tough question is whether that's you or the other person.
Starting point is 00:04:05 If it's you, then that's okay. You can fix that really easily, with some acknowledgement, an apology, and then just putting in the actual effort. If it's the other person who's slacking, then perhaps you should take that up with them. If they're not open to hearing your view, then there's your sign.
Starting point is 00:04:26 And that leads to our next concept, subtraction. One of the best ways to improve your life is by subtracting out things that are not serving you. And aside from yourself, the biggest killer of your sense of connection is other people, negative people, self-centered people, the kinds of people who make your life worse. And the tough thing is, you might deeply care for these people. people. But for one reason or another, they are or have become toxic, and they're sucking the life out of you like a vampire. These are your connection killers, and they act in many different ways. That's why subtraction is so crucial for addressing loneliness. Subtract the people from your
Starting point is 00:05:18 life who aren't adding to it. You are enough. You are worth being friends with. You deserve respect and you deserve healthy relationships. If someone else is causing your loneliness and they're not open to hearing about it or addressing it, cut them out. I thought we'd end today with some affirmations designed to encourage your own self-worth around relationships and connection. So let's turn to that. Repeat after me. I am worthy of healthy relationships. I am interesting. I am fun and charismatic. I'm caring. Others enjoy my company. I am a positive force in the lives of others. I treat others with respect. I expect to be treated with respect. I don't waste time on people who treat me poorly. I am not alone. I deserve to feel
Starting point is 00:06:59 connected with others. I seek out opportunities to find like-minded people. I attract good people into my life. I focus my energy on the positive people in my life. I give love and attention, and I deserve them in return. My friend, I will say it again. You are enough. You are worth being friends with. You are interesting. You deserve respect. and you deserve healthy, engaging relationships. You deserve to feel connected. So I hope this episode has you motivated to go out and seek that. But that's all for now.
