Now before our episode begins, here's a quick word from our sponsors.
Hey there, good morning and welcome to Wake Me Up.
I'd like to start today with one of the biggest illusions in life.
The illusion is that we are completely separate from each other.
We live in separate bodies, with separate minds,
and to be fair, we need that illusion to an extent.
That sense of separation allows us to simplify our existence
to a degree to which we can understand it.
But we can't forget that it is in fact.
an illusion.
The systems of our bodies,
brains, the workings of nature,
and other relationships
of plants and animals
are all so interconnected.
In fact,
we wouldn't even be able to exist
if we weren't interconnected.
In this episode,
we'll dive into this topic,
the principle that all things are connected.
And you'll see why
this idea is not only
inspirational, but both freeing and supportive.
Now, before we dive in, just take one moment to pause.
Take a deep breath in, fill all the way up, hold, and then release.
Just let it all fall back out.
And as you do, envision how the air is moving around you.
As you breathe in, you remove air from your surroundings,
which shifts every other bit of air to fill that.
empty space. As you breathe out, you force more air back into your surroundings,
pushing the other air molecules away to make more space. Each time you breathe,
you're shaping your surroundings. And in the same way, your surroundings shape you. A
breath of really fresh air can be felt in the body, just like a breath of dirty
air can be too.
These may seem like small effects, but when you add up all of the breaths we take in one day
and all of our other movements, actions, and decisions, you begin to see that we are constantly
in this dance with the world around us, each shaping one another.
So let's take one more of those deep breaths.
Inhale, feeling the air, fill you up, hold.
and then exhale, release.
And if you're in bed,
I recommend using this moment to roll over
and make your way up and get your day started.
Wherever you are, feel free to go about your morning routine,
making your coffee, having a stretch, going for a walk,
whatever it is that you like to do.
And while you do that,
let's circle back to how everything is connected.
One of my favorite thinkers, Alan Watts, has a beautiful quote on this idea.
He said, you are a function of what the whole universe is doing,
in the same way that a wave is a function of what the whole ocean is doing.
So, in other words, a wave is a single expression of the massive movements of the ocean.
And a life is a single expression of the massive movements of our universe.
At Cartole, another great mind offers the same metaphor
that each one of us is a wave,
and there's nothing we can do to make that any different.
We can't be more than a wave, and we can't be any less.
We do have influence on the movement of the water
to the other lives that live within it,
but we're just as temporary as any other wave.
It's the collection of those waves that creates movement.
beauty, the whole ocean. Think about all of the living things that have stood exactly where you are.
From the dinosaurs who stood there millions and millions of years ago, to a person or a pet who may have
been there within the past week or day, everything we do is connected through time and space.
So what can we do with this knowledge? Well, here are a few takeaways.
First, know that you are exactly who you are supposed to be,
and you're doing exactly what you're supposed to be doing.
Forces of power and size far beyond our comprehension
have conspired to make you exist,
to make you the way you are, the way you look,
to have you here today listening to me.
From that, we reach the second takeaway.
The universe is always working for you,
not against you
because remember
you are the universe
so stop worrying so much
stop trying to force everything
stop trying to be something
or someone that you're not
because it's not going to work
you will get so much farther
and enjoy life
so much more if you ride
the wave instead of swim against it
and the final takeaway
is that just as the universe
is working for you
It is also working for everything and everyone else.
You are the universe, but you are not the center of it.
But that's okay, because the possibilities and opportunities in our shared ocean are so vast.
We are not competing against each other.
We are each other.
So offer respect and love to the other beings you cross paths with.
Their journey is just as a single.
important as yours. And what a special thing to cross past with someone in this infinite universe.
My friend, you are a part of nature's interconnected systems, even though your brain is wired
so that you can't always see it. Remembering this brings instant perspective, appreciation,
and gratitude. You never need to feel alone, abandoned, unimportant, or less than.
And here's why.
You are never alone because you're connected to all things.
You're connected to the butterflies you see on your daily walk,
to the plants on the side of the road,
to all of the waves in the ocean.
And you are never less than anything else.
Every molecule in your body is absolutely essential
to the functioning of the entire universe.
It wouldn't be the same universe.
without every cell in your body, every electron in your body, every thought you've ever had,
and every action you've ever taken. That is a mathematical fact. You are intended to be here
exactly as you are right now, just as much as the sun is meant to shine. So appreciate yourself.
You deserve it. And appreciate everything.
and everyone else too.
We are all equally necessary and essential to each other.
No matter how much we may sometimes annoy one another,
no matter how much we may disagree,
no matter how much we may appear to be at odds,
when you zoom out, we are all one,
we are all together,
and we are all moving in concert.
We are all.
connected. Well, my friend, thanks so much for choosing to be here today. I hope you enjoyed this
episode, and I hope it's filled you with some kindred spirit for the other living beings
who you'll cross paths with today. I hope to see you again here soon on Wake Me Up,
and until then, go out and have an absolutely fantastic day.
