Hey there, and welcome back to Wake Me Up. I'm your host Tyler, as always, and I'm so thrilled that you're here.
On this show, I know you hear a lot of yeses, but in real life, we hear a lot of nose, too.
So this week, we're going to talk about all of those nos, that rejection that we get.
Rejection can sting, and it can feel deeply personal, conjuring the idea that we're just not good enough.
But today and this week, we're going to work on reframing the idea of rejection.
You'll hear me say a bunch of times this week, a no to one thing is a yes to something else.
Although it may not seem this way in the moment,
rejection might just be the best thing that happens to you.
But before we start, just take a moment for yourself.
Think about all of the things that you've already overcome in life.
Think about how you still stand strong here today,
despite every rejection that you've faced.
So take a deep breath in and fill up with confidence
an appreciation for yourself.
And then exhale, just let all of that air go.
Once more now, inhale, taking in all of the opportunities that life presents you.
Exhale, releasing any thoughts that you're not good enough.
My friend, you are exactly what you need to be.
You've got everything you need.
So go ahead and get started with your morning.
Take some time to have a stretch, make some coffee,
or go for a walk, whatever it is you like to do.
And while you do that, let's talk about what to do when you're faced with rejection.
Being told no, whether by a job, a partner, or a landlord, it hurts.
There's no way around that, just as there's no way around being rejected.
The only way to truly avoid rejection is by simply never attempting anything at all.
But that also guarantees that you won't succeed at anything or be happy.
We have to accept rejection if we want to continue moving forward.
It's just a part of being alive.
Even people who you might think to be incredibly successful and talented,
they have to face it too.
Vincent Van Gogh, one of the best-known impressionist painters,
actually only sold a single painting while he was alive.
His work was rejected for being too dark at the time.
But despite these criticisms, Van Gogh continued to paint
without changing his style and technique to appeal to the public.
He refused to be deterred by the rejection.
And now, people flock to museums
just to catch a glimpse of one of his many famous works.
That right there is proof
that rejection has nothing to do with your talent,
or skills. In fact, it has nothing to do with who you are at all. Rejection only has to do
with the rejector, the person saying no. And the good news is, even if you're rejected a
thousand times, your worth as a person remains untouched. So there's no need to define yourself
by your rejections. Really, when you think about it, a rejection should be appreciated.
It saves you time from something that's not going to serve you anyways.
But as humans, we love finding a good explanation for something.
We like to create stories because they help us make sense of things.
But these stories are not necessarily based in fact.
We fill them up with a lot of assumptions.
So it's likely that you've come up with plenty of reasons for your own rejection.
But probably none of them are actually true.
So everything that you've told yourself about not being smart enough,
good-looking enough, strong enough, or talented enough,
it's irrelevant.
It's simply not the truth.
Those are just made-up stories.
So when we're rejected, what is the truth?
Well, whatever it is that you were chasing, seeking a yes from,
it just isn't meant for you.
The door that was closed wasn't the one you were supposed to go through.
And that just means there's another path leading to somewhere better.
And I know it can hurt to hear that whatever it is you've been wanting so desperately isn't for you.
I know it can take some time, but the only way to move forward is to accept it.
Because in reality, rejection is just redirection.
Think about it this way.
To get where you are today, you've faced many a rejection.
You've gotten plenty of noes that have eventually taken you to yeses.
One way or another, you have rejection to thank for redirecting you to where you are today.
And my friend, let me remind you, you are exactly where you're supposed to be.
So when that door gets shut in your face, don't sweat it.
Go knock on another.
Or maybe, get inventive.
And try going through a window or start climbing walls.
But whatever you do, don't get hung up on that rejection,
because it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with the other person.
If you love what you're doing, then keep doing it.
That's the only reason you need.
Take pride in whatever it is you have to offer.
You haven't been devalued just because something or someone wasn't the right fit for you.
Be kind to yourself.
Be sure of yourself.
Because you are just as wonderful of a person as everyone else.
You are meant for something bigger, better, greater than you first envisioned.
Don't waste your life away, endlessly trying to figure out what you did wrong,
or what you could have possibly done to change the outcome.
Just let it go.
It wasn't meant for you.
The more time you spend lingering in the past,
the more time you're missing out on finding the right opportunity.
It's time to start seeing these rejections as redirections,
as necessary steps along your path to success.
Because that's exactly what they are.
No path is perfectly straight.
Every single one has some twists and turns.
So don't let being rejected stop you from trying again.
If you do, at the end of the day, you're the only one who loses out on what could be a marvelous opportunity.
Instead of sitting and lingering in your rejection, ask yourself, what can I learn from this attempt?
What can I do in the future?
And where can I go now?
Once you have your answers,
keep moving forward with the confidence and knowledge
that you are on the path you're meant to be on.
One of my favorite humans ever,
Bob Ross, used to say that there are no mistakes,
only happy accidents.
And it's similar with rejection.
There are no rejections, only redirections.
And a no is simply a yes to something else.
Well, my friend, thank you so much for being here today.
I'm so glad that you joined.
And I hope that this motivational bit has reminded you of your intrinsic value.
That will never depreciate.
Your worth as a human being will never go away.
If these ideas have inspired you and you want to dive deeper,
then I hope to see you back here tomorrow for this week's meditation.
It's going to be a really powerful visualization,
and I know it will help these ideas sink deeper into your mind.
So I hope to see you there.
Until then, go out and have an absolutely fantastic day.
