Now before our episode begins, here's a quick word from our sponsors.
Hey there, and welcome to Wake Me Up. I'm your host, Tyler, as usual, and I'm so glad you're here today.
In this episode and throughout the rest of this week,
we're going to talk about knowing that you are enough,
moving past any feelings of imposter syndrome or general inferiority
that might be holding you back from experiencing confidence
and emotional security in your everyday life.
In short, we're going to work on our self-worth.
After this week's episodes, you'll see yourself a little more clearly,
and you'll feel a little more free from thoughts
that are harmful to your mental well-being.
You'll also be more confident
about how to respond to those thoughts if they do come up.
Whether or not you're someone who experiences
an active inferiority complex,
we all have moments where we think we're not good enough
or we're not qualified to do something.
And it's those negative thoughts
that we're going to knock out today
and the rest of this week.
But before we dive in, let's take this moment just to pause.
Use this time just for you, momentarily setting aside anything else that you're going to do later.
And remember a time that you were really proud of yourself.
A time when you accomplished something that you had to work and try for.
Remember how good that felt.
both the chase and the accomplishment.
My friend, when you were born,
you didn't have the skills and the knowledge
to make this accomplishment happen.
You learned and you grew, you fell down, and you got back up.
That's how you got there.
You wouldn't call your child's self a fake or an inferior
for not having the skills,
but still hoping you may one day read,
that accomplishment. So by the same logic, you shouldn't do that to yourself now. You are still
growing. You are still learning. And you're still facing and overcoming challenges every day.
So take a deep breath in and fill up with belief in yourself. Hold at the top for just a second.
and exhale and let go of any negative self-talk.
Any of those negative ideas you hold about yourself.
Once more, inhale, filling up with self-belief and release,
letting go of any of those negative chains that bind you.
Fantastic.
Now, you can feel free to go about your morning,
having a glass of water, brewing your coffee or tea,
having a stretch or going for a walk, anything that you like to do.
And while you do that, let's talk about that common feeling so many of us share,
the illusion that we're not quite good enough, talented enough, attractive enough, or smart enough.
Maybe you've experienced moments of feeling inferior at some point in your life.
Even some of the most successful people in the world do.
But feeling inferior is that.
actually not tied to being unworthy. It's just a feeling, and rarely does it have supporting
evidence. If you look objectively, you'll find plenty of evidence both for and against you
being a superstar at everything. The feeling of inadequacy comes from what pieces of evidence
that you choose to identify with. Here's an example to show you what I mean. There's plenty of
basketball players who were taller than Michael Jordan.
Plenty were faster or had longer arms or could jump higher.
Those are all objective facts we can look at to try to determine whether someone would
be good at basketball.
But clearly, none of those are determinative.
They may be helpful and informative, but they are not decisive.
There's so much more under the surface that's required to be good at anything.
And the same is true for literally everything in life.
We can all list certain objective things that we might measure someone by
to determine if they're smart, attractive, entrepreneurial,
but those factors alone paint a wholly incomplete picture.
So this just goes to show the experience of inadequacy is emotional.
It's not logical.
We feel that we're inadequate, but we don't know it to be true for sure.
Indeed, we often experience this feeling when thinking about a goal or a dream that we one day hope to have.
And most often, the feeling comes from comparison to others.
They pop up at the same time as the anxiety about your life, skills, or achievements,
not measuring up to who you think you should be.
So how do we deal with this?
Well, first, try to relax your expectations.
of who you should be.
Stop worrying so much about what your family, your boss,
social media and society wants you to be
and hone in on what you want you to be.
What's the kind of person you need to be
for you to fully respect yourself
and to fully believe in yourself?
That's the only thing you should care about.
Second, remember that the world we see these days
is heavily edited.
The use of social media has been shown over and over
to be harmful to people who feel inferior.
But one study even showed that those who feel in fear
are more likely to impulsively share their feelings on social media.
And it seems that this is an act in defense of their identity.
But it's not just social media that's to blame.
People do all kinds of things just to prove themselves to others,
like buying fancy cars or doing certain.
things they don't believe in.
The pressure to constantly show others how well we're doing
in order to gain their approval
leaves us constantly seeking external validation.
We forget to shift our focus inwards
towards putting value on our skills
and those internal qualities that actually bring us value.
The same feelings of inferiority
are unsurprisingly linked to depression and anxiety,
and it's only when one starts to,
actively seek out tools, such as mindfulness practice, talk therapy, and non-judgment
towards yourself, that we actually begin to see our inherent value and worth.
My friend, your worth is not measured by your bank account, your car, or the likes you get
on some post. Your worth is completely self-determined, and it's based on how you feel
about yourself.
Any feelings of inferiority
aren't a reflection of your success,
your personal capabilities, finances,
or your level of desirability to a romantic partner.
Those feelings of low self-worth or inferiority,
they are a weed that has been planted in your mind
by someone else who wants you to be less.
It's time to remove those limiting ideas.
Because there's no one else that you should be.
And striving to do so is leading you in the opposite direction
of your most successful, most evolved, most confident self.
So if you find yourself low on self-esteem,
notice what you're placing value on.
It's likely to be something materialistic or superficial,
not really based in a deep sense of self.
Material goods straight up do not lead to happiness and fulfillment.
So ignore them and instead focus on the skills you have,
the activities that bring you joy,
your incredible ability to give and receive love,
and your desire to always become better.
The very fact that you're here listening to this podcast right now
shows that you are in pursuit of the best version of yourself.
And that is the most valuable asset you can have, a growth mindset.
Most of us are spending time comparing traits that we don't even actually value that much.
This is why it can be so helpful to snap out of it in those moments by asking yourself,
what do I actually value?
What really makes me happy?
And what do I actually want in life?
Am I meeting my own expectations?
And if not, where can I do better without judging myself for where I am today?
My friend, allow yourself to step out of the illusion,
the fiction of comparison and inferiority.
and know deep down that where you are and who you are is exactly, perfectly enough.
That's all for this episode.
I hope you're feeling full of self-belief and self-worth,
because you certainly deserve to feel that way.
I'll be back tomorrow for a really wonderful meditation on this same theme,
so I hope to see you there.
If you have a second before you carry on with your day,
then I'd really appreciate it if you could rate
and leave a review of the show
on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
There's links to do that in the episode notes.
Until tomorrow, go out
and have an absolutely fantastic day.
