Hey there, and welcome to Wake Me Up. I'm Tyler, your host, as always. And I'm so glad to have you here with me. People are always wondering about the secret to success. But there isn't a secret. It's well-known that hard work towards a goal consistently,
Starting point is 00:00:32 for a long time is how it happens. Most people don't see the success they dream of because they can't sustain long enough. They can't push through. They fall off because things get boring, or they burn out. What separates those at the top is their stick-to-itiveness.
Starting point is 00:00:53 The road to success is paved with many unexciting stretches of time and uncompelling tasks. Those who succeed learn to master the mundane. And that's what we'll talk about today. But before we dive in, just pause for one moment and visualize yourself accomplishing a goal,
Starting point is 00:01:20 any goal, anything you'd like to do in life. You can even close your eyes if you find it helpful. See yourself there, reaching that pinnacle moment, and fill in all of the details. Where you are, Who else is there? What all is happening and what it feels like?
Starting point is 00:02:01 And then consider all of the steps you'd need to take to get there. Perhaps you're nearing completion of this goal already. Or maybe you've only just begun. Either way, there are many difficult aspects on the path toward any goal. Think now on some of the less interesting, less compelling steps that you need to take to accomplish this goal and see yourself doing them, knocking them out passionately,
Starting point is 00:02:45 and moving forward. Now take a deep breath in and collect that visual of you accomplishing this goal and exhale, release, just let it all go. Once more, inhale, collecting the visualization of you accomplishing this goal, and then exhale and release. My friend, you truly can do anything in life.
Starting point is 00:03:32 You can't do everything, but you can do anything. You've just got to get your way there. So while you go about your morning routine, let's talk about the ways that successful people in any walk of life stand out. And let's start with two related quotes from the late leader of Apple, Steve Jobs. The first one is more inspirational. It goes, people with passion can change the world. Which is true.
Starting point is 00:04:12 You see it in every facet of human life. Business, technology, science, politics and society, sport. Those who pursue life with passion have the ability to move mountains. The second quote is more practical. The only way to do great work is to live. love what you do. At first, that may seem quite limiting, but there is truth in it too. You see, great work requires you to go above and beyond, to go the extra mile. That's what it takes to go from good to great. It requires careful attention to every detail, the devotion of every
Starting point is 00:05:01 neuron in your brain and every cell in your body. Successful people stand out, because of their passion, because they devote every cell in their body towards that goal. It is the love for what they do that makes them rise to the top. Not because they are more talented or genetically gifted. There will always be someone smarter, stronger, faster, but there may not be someone as smart, as strong, as fast, who is also passionate. Passion takes you to a deeper level of commitment. And here's the key point.
Starting point is 00:05:45 Any goal requires you to do mundane tasks, to overcome boredom and to avoid burnout. Only someone with passion will have the energy and enthusiasm to work through those obstacles. Let's look at athletics for an example. It's only a striking few who make it from high school sports, sports to the pros. One study showed roughly 853 players make the pros each year out of an original population of nearly 1.1 million high school athletes. That's less than 0.001%. To put that number in perspective, it's about the same as you're getting struck by lightning. And even among those who go to
Starting point is 00:06:37 the pros, there are countless instances of wildly talented individuals who don't make much of a career. But then you have plenty of examples of the opposite too, less quote-unquote naturally gifted people, the ones who aren't the biggest and strongest and fastest, who go on to become all-stars. So if all of these people are the 1% of the 1%, what sets the successful group apart. It's their passion, their focus on everything, not just the high pressure important moments, but also the mundane behind the scenes. For example, for the great athletes, recovery is nearly as important as practice itself, getting enough sleep, following a proper diet, stretching, ice baths. These aspects are easily overlooked.
Starting point is 00:07:37 but it's how the greats avoid burnout, come to every game full of energy, and avoid injury. In short, many people are capable of doing the same great thing, but it's only those who master the mundane that will reach the top. So how can you master the mundane and succeed at anything? Well, first, you've got to choose your goals carefully. You will only go the extra mile for things you care about, things you are deeply passionate about. So take time to consider what really fires you up. What do you think about day and night, all on your own?
Starting point is 00:08:30 Remember that it's only the people who come with passion that will work through the obstacles of burnout and boredom. Second, allow yourself to get lost in this passion. Go the extra mile. Give it your all. And choose to shine not only in the big moments, but the little ones too. How you carry yourself and how you prepare behind the scenes will come forth in those important moments. So set those high expectations and act like the star that you are in the private moments too.
Starting point is 00:09:10 And that way, you'll feel right at home when the pressure is on. Third, put passion into every aspect of your goal, even the more mundane, less exciting ones. Be the athlete that is obsessed with recovery. Be the artist that doesn't just study the grades of their craft, but the greats of other crafts too. Bring that extra attention to detail that may be only you and one other person,
Starting point is 00:09:43 will notice at first. Because when people look back on your legacy, it's that extra effort you gave that will be what they talk about. My friend, the mundane things are tough because they're boring. Sometimes there are so many of these little mundane details that we get bogged down
Starting point is 00:10:04 and burnt out by them before we even get to doing the fun stuff. But if you bring passion into everything you do, even the mundane stuff, there is nothing that will hold you back. Well, that's all for now, friends. Thank you so much for tuning in today. I hope you're excited about this day, this opportunity at life, and I hope you go out and bring passion to everything that you do. I'll talk to you soon, and until then, have an absolutely fantastic day.
