Hey there, welcome to Wake Me Up and welcome to 2023. I'm your host, Tyler, as always, and I'm so glad that you're here joining me in this new year. It's a special time of year, the time where we have a chance to mentally reset for the better. The new year presents a natural opportunity to change our habits or start on a new endeavor. When January rolls around each year, we shouldn't overlook this chance. So today, we're going to chat about how to harness the power of the new year,
Starting point is 00:00:53 which goes way beyond just setting a new year's resolution. But before we dive in, just pause for one moment. Take a big breath in, filling all the way up. And as you exhale, just let the air fall out. No need to force it. And take a moment to reflect on the past year, on everything you've accomplished, every challenge you've faced, everything you've learned, and everywhere you've been. What has the past year taught you?
Starting point is 00:01:50 What ups and downs did you make your way through? And what about all of those things that seemed like a big deal in the moment? but they actually weren't. Hindsight can be a really powerful tool. So use this moment of reflection to improve your next year. Let's take one more deep breath. So inhale and exhale. And remember that you have a chance to reset at every moment in life.
Starting point is 00:02:50 It's not just at the new year. Every step you take and every breath, And every breath you take is a chance to start over. So remember that no matter what happens, life goes on. And you don't have to be today the person that you were yesterday. In fact, you can't be because you've already grown into someone better. Feel free to go about your morning routine, making your coffee or tea, having a glass of water, a nice stretch, or going for a walk,
Starting point is 00:03:31 whatever it is that you like to do. And while you do that, let's talk about how we can start anew in this new year. Starting fresh always feels good. Sometimes in life, when we get stuck, a fresh start can give us a way out of our old patterns. And even if everything is going well and we feel successful and accomplished,
Starting point is 00:04:06 Starting anew gives us clarity of perception. It gives us a new way to see things. It can be the motivating factor that finally gets you to kick an old, bad habit or start a new, positive one. The turn of the year gives us a wonderful opportunity to look at our lives and re-examine what we've been doing. It gives us the chance to step back
Starting point is 00:04:35 and decide if the way we're spending our time really serves us. Most importantly, it allows us to make intentional and purposeful change. In fact, there's actually a term for this. It's called the Fresh Start Effect. Researchers dubbed this term to define the motivational effect that comes with starting anew. And it turns out that time-oriented landmarks, like the New Year, motivate aspirational behaviors and help people take action towards goals.
Starting point is 00:05:12 But the funny part about that is even though the New Year encourages people to get on track, apparently only about 9% of people who make a New Year's resolution feel they are successful in keeping them by the end of the year. That's according to a study from 2016. Part of the reason for this is that people tend to set unrealistic goals. Unintentionally, they're setting themselves up for failure. So how can we change our habits and actions without setting big resolutions that we're likely not going to stick to?
Starting point is 00:05:53 Well, rather than setting these big, lofty goals, we can focus more on an idea. And I recommend a simple, single word. My word for this year is focus. And what's great about this approach is that a word is just an idea. It can change with you. And we all know that the circumstances of life can change in the blink of an eye. But no matter what happens to me this year, I can still work on staying focused. If you want to hear more about that, then check out my mindful minute from last week.
Starting point is 00:06:33 The other thing you can do is focus on taking definitive action steps. For example, if your goal is to get in shape, then start by taking small steps to accomplish that goal. Simply signing up for the trial at your local gym or yoga studio, or connecting with some friends who might want to go for a weekly run or walk. We can have all of these wonderful dreams and desires for life, but if we don't take the actionable steps that lead to positive change, we're never going to see those dreams come to fruition. So focus on setting smaller, more attainable goals.
Starting point is 00:07:17 And part of that boils down to being truthful with yourself. When January 1st rolls around, the reality is that you are still you. You still have your habits and your tendencies. So what can you realistically commit to? And what can you see yourself actually doing? If you want to make a positive change this year, be practical. But you also need to realize your infinite potential.
Starting point is 00:08:00 My friend, a new year is a time of renewal. So go on and take full advantage of this opportunity. Why not? This could be your year. Be your already amazing self. But strive to become. an even better version. This is a year to let all of your hard work so far in life
Starting point is 00:08:27 finally come to fruition. Use the lessons you've learned from years past to shape your vision going forward. What is it that you really want? What would serve you the best? What hasn't served you before? And what's going to make you happy on a daily basis? Work on creating the journey that you are going to love.
Starting point is 00:08:59 The destination is just a finish line. You can't spend your entire life there. So practice making yourself happy and fulfilled on a day-to-day basis. And as I mentioned earlier, the best way to do this is to set small, attainable goals. Go out and take action now, today, on the things that you want. Set boundaries for yourself by saying no to things that you don't want or you don't need anymore. Decide if there are parts of your identity that you're ready to put behind you and dive into
Starting point is 00:09:41 the things that will make you fulfilled. Now is the only time that matters, because now is the only moment that you can currently control. So why not make the best of it? Don't be afraid to make change and to take steps forward into an unknown future. After all, you've taken thousands and thousands of steps to get where you are now. And there's so much more that lies ahead. yourself permission to be bold and brave. And at the same time, be realistic so that you can set yourself up for real, meaningful, and lasting success. Life is all about that balance between being
Starting point is 00:10:35 realistic and a little bit crazy. Don't be afraid to be yourself. Be unique and authentic because you are Find that fine line of balance. And don't worry if you fall off to one side here and there. You will make your way back because you always have before. May this be a year of taking calculated risks, of surprising yourself with all that you can do. May it be a year where dreams come to life. And reality is everything that you hope for.
Starting point is 00:11:17 Well, that's all for this episode. Thank you so much for joining me here at the start of what I hope is a very wonderful new year for you and everyone. I'll be back tomorrow for a meditation to help you frame your mind for a positive year. So I hope to see you there. And until then, go out and have an absolutely fantastic day.
