Now before our episode begins, here's a quick word from our sponsors.
Hey there, and welcome to Wake Me Up.
I'm Tyler, your host, and I'm so glad you're here.
This week, we're going to be talking about self-sabotage, a form of psychological self-harm.
It happens when you destroy or undermine your own efforts, causing a negative effect on yourself,
preventing you from reaching your goals and being happy.
The thing is, we are all guilty of self-sabotage in some way.
We all have our moments here and there.
Nobody's perfect, and we shouldn't try to be.
But it's important to recognize the signs of continuous or repeated self-sabotage,
especially when it's hindering your progress in life.
After this week's episodes, I'm sure you'll feel more self-belief, more freedom,
because you will have stopped self-sabotaging,
and you'll be one step closer to living your best life.
Now, before we begin today, just take a moment to pause.
Take a deep breath in.
fill all the way into your belly, hold at the top, and then exhale, repeating the words,
I deserve everything I desire. Let everything soften and take one more breath in,
filling deep into your belly, hold at the top, and then exhale, repeating, I deserve everything
I desire. I encourage you to embody that affirmation in its entirety.
because you do deserve everything you desire.
We all do if we're willing to work for it.
If you're still in bed,
it's a great time to roll over,
get out of bed, and get your day started.
It's another beautiful opportunity at this thing called life.
So don't let it slip away.
And as you turn to your morning routine,
I'll talk about this idea of self-sabotage,
and how we can stop holding ourselves back.
You may have heard the saying that
the only thing stopping you from being your best is you.
And this couldn't be more true.
Self-sabotage happens to all of us in one way or another.
It's just part of life.
But when it occurs on a regular basis
and becomes a continuous hindrance to our progress,
that's when it's time to take a step back and reassess.
We have to ask ourselves,
am I the one causing this stress,
causing this limitation,
causing this lack of self-belief?
Self-sabotage can come in the form of any self-destructive behavior,
thinking that you're not capable of something,
bringing or talking yourself down emotionally
so that you don't believe in yourself,
coming up with excuses so that you don't have to make an improvement
or a change that you want to make.
These are all forms of self-sabotage.
Some of them are pretty obvious to us.
Some of them may be more hidden.
And it's often the latter that tend to be the most destructive
because we don't notice them as easily.
You might already see how self-sabotage can easily become a habitual pattern
and a never-ending cycle.
Breaking that cycle gets harder and harder,
the more we get involved in the self-sabotage.
But it's never impossible to break.
There's always a way out.
Self-sabotage can manifest in minimal or seemingly harmless ways.
Perhaps we stay up late scrolling on our phone every night,
and we end up not sleeping as much as we should.
Maybe we criticize those we love.
Maybe we even criticize ourselves.
Or maybe we eat junk food for every meal.
Many of these self-sabotaging habits are tricky because they're rewarding in the short term,
but damaging in the long term.
It's up to us to embark on this journey of retraining and rewiring our minds.
You're probably aware of these negative, self-sabotaging habits you have.
So the next time you're about to engage in one, just pause.
Take a deep breath.
Consider whether it's really going to benefit you in the long run.
And maybe it's okay to do this thing every now and then,
but maybe it's harmful to do it all the time.
Teasing these things apart will help you understand the root desire of the behavior.
Is it anxiety?
Is it a feeling of being unworthy?
In order to understand that root car,
cause, we have to be mindful and we have to look inwards.
Pay particular attention to self-talk.
What's going on with your internal dialogue when you're about to engage in these behaviors?
Try to catch yourself during that negative self-talk.
Consider how a friend would talk to you in this situation.
And try to talk to yourself the same way, with compassion, understanding, and love.
It's crucial that we work to understand the thought patterns and emotions that lead us to self-sabotaging behaviors.
And getting to know ourselves on the deepest level is the most important thing we can do
to get rid of that self-sabotage and experience long-lasting happiness and freedom.
Bill Crawford said,
Nothing will sabotage our happiness and success more thoroughly than the fear that we are not enough.
My friend, if you are ever struggling with the feeling of being unworthy,
know that it is not your fault.
As children, we unwittingly learn to harbor certain mindsets as a result of our environment,
and we carry those patterns with us into adulthood.
But as an adult, you have the wherewithal, the personal skills,
and the power to reverse your mindset.
You can break this cycle of unworthiness, of self-sabotage by consciously practicing healthy habits.
And through that, you will create a positive ripple effect in your life.
Remember, you create your own reality.
You deserve everything you desire.
What would your life look like if you continuously chose the path towards health and vitality,
over and over again.
Visualize the joy you would feel every day
if you just replaced bad habits with good ones.
And remember, it's not about being perfect.
It's not about erasing every bad thought.
It's about changing your core beliefs.
Nothing in life is set in stone.
Your cells regenerate entirely every seven years.
And so every seven years, you're a completely new person.
Let that free you to the idea that you can change yourself completely.
And remember that it's okay to slip up.
Moments of self-sabotage are to be expected.
They are an integral part of the journey.
We have to learn and mess up in order to change.
And when you slip up, choose to choose to be expected.
be lighthearted about it. Pima Chodrin says, it's hard to know whether to laugh or cry at the human
predicament. Here we are with so much wisdom and tenderness, and without even knowing it, we cover it
over to protect ourselves from insecurity. Although we have the potential to experience the freedom
of a butterfly, we mysteriously prefer the small and fearful cocoon of ego. By
choosing to see the inherent ridiculousness of our self-sabotaging habits, we can be less tense,
less rigid, and more forgiving. My friend, choose habits that lead to your freedom, your happiness,
and your fulfillment. And know deep down that you are capable and deserving of everything you desire.
Well, that's all for now. Thanks for listening and choosing.
to be here. Tomorrow I'll be back with a loving kindness meditation that will help you practice
overcoming self-sabotaging ideas. So I hope to see you there. Until then, go out and have an
absolutely fantastic day.
