Hello everyone, and welcome to Wake Me Up, the podcast, where morning people are made. I'm Tyler, your host, and I'm so glad to have you here with me this morning. The most worthwhile things in life require effort. They require sacrifice. They require us to become a better person. In short, success in anything requires you to deal with discomfort.
Starting point is 00:00:44 Today's episode is a motivational bit to help you work through that discomfort, rather than run away from it, so you can achieve everything in life you dream of. Before we get started, a very special shout out goes to Michelle. for joining the Wake Me Up Patreon community. Thanks, Michelle, for your support of the show. Now, a great day lies ahead, so let's get started. If you're in bed or if you're already up, it doesn't matter. But take a big breath in.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Hold it at the top for just a second. And then exhale. Let it all go. And then inhale again. filling all the way into your belly. Hold it and exhale. So if you are joining from bed, then take this moment to roll over,
Starting point is 00:02:00 slide out of bed, and stand up. Today is going to be a fantastic day. I just know it. So let's not waste another second of this gift we've been so lucky to receive. Now that we're all up and out of bed, Let's take a quick stretch, like we often do to help wake the body up. And we'll do my favorite, a forward fold.
Starting point is 00:02:32 But today it will hold special significance, and you'll see why in a moment. So stand up straight and reach both of your hands all the way to the sky. Reach out of your shoulders, reach as far as you can. And then on your next exhale, fold forward at the waist, but everything relaxed toward the ground. Let your arms dangle, and let your neck soften. While you're hanging out in this forward fold, feel the sensation of your muscles under tension,
Starting point is 00:03:17 your lower back, your hamstrings, maybe your calves. This, my friends, is discomfort. I know you're thinking, no, Tyler, stretching feels good. It doesn't. Think about it. You're tugging on your muscles. You're literally pulling your muscle fibers apart. The reason you think it feels good is because you've learned to deal with this
Starting point is 00:03:47 kind of discomfort. You've learned that after the discomfort of stretching, you feel better. And if you understand this concept, you are so far ahead of most people. We'll come back to that in a second, but for now, let's finish this stretch. So slowly begin to roll all the way back up to standing. And once you're there, take one more big inhale, reach your hands all the way back up to the sky, and then exhale, release, and shake all of that out. So let's circle back to that point. What we've learned with stretching is the difference between pain and discomfort. Pain we need to back out of. It will actually hurt us.
Starting point is 00:04:45 Discomfort is temporary. It's a growing pain, if you want. will. We can work through it with a little patience, understanding, and practice. And through that, discomfort will make us better. Friends, success should not be painful. It shouldn't break you into pieces. It should, however, be uncomfortable. And here's why. If you already had all of the traits and skills and the psychological framework necessary to succeed, you'd already be succeeding. All of the pieces would already be in place. You would already be the person that you need to be in order to succeed at whatever it is you want to do. Yet, we all have something we want to
Starting point is 00:05:36 succeed at, but we're just not there yet. That's because we haven't become the person we need to be to succeed at that thing. We have growing to do. We have learning to do. We have mindset changes to make. And when you're growing, well, you get growing pains. You've been living in this box of your current self. Let's call it your comfort zone. And now you're reaching for something outside of that box. You're looking to expand who you are. Naturally, as you grow, You're going to start being squished inside that box. You'll be uncomfortable. You'll have to push the boundaries of the box if you want to expand yourself.
Starting point is 00:06:23 And that requires effort. That requires you to be squished up for a little while before you figure out how to push, expand, and reshape that box. My friends, success at anything in life isn't for the faint of heart. The forces at B tend to pull us toward the average. They pull us back to what we know and what we're comfortable with. If you are trying to expand yourself, trying to become a better person in any way, you're going to have to deal with discomfort.
Starting point is 00:07:08 Because growth and success means you're working against the status quo. You're swimming against the current. If you're training to run a marathon, you'll have to push through discomfort to get your body physically ready for such a feat. If you're starting a new business, you'll have to deal with the discomfort of detractors and naysayers who don't think your ideal will work. If you're trying to be a better friend, a better partner, or a better coworker, you're going to have to deal with the discomfort of facing your flaws and mistakes. in order to be the best version of yourself for the other person. We have to make a habit of getting outside of our comfort zone. Get uncomfortable.
Starting point is 00:07:57 Because the more we practice knowing discomfort and dealing with it, the more equipped will be when faced with it. Know the difference between pain and discomfort. The former will hurt you. It will break you. It will set you back, and you should avoid it. The latter will change you.
Starting point is 00:08:20 It will make you better, but it won't break you. So you should seek it out. My friends, whenever you feel discomfort, don't run. Cautiously lean into it. Learn from it. Because it's when we begin to feel uncomfortable
Starting point is 00:08:39 that we can be sure success is on its way. That's all I've got for today. episode. I really appreciate you tuning in.
