Hi there, good morning and welcome to Wake Me Up, the podcast where morning people are made. I hope you're waking up full of excitement and possibility today. Isn't it such a nice feeling when things are going right and you're in stride? But we know that's not always the case. Sometimes life beats us down, and we just want to retract, curl up in bed and avoid everything, even the things we genuinely enjoy.
Starting point is 00:00:48 That's a totally legitimate feeling. It's one that I have from time to time myself. Friends, sometimes we work really hard at something, a relationship, a job, only to be down in the end. Disappointments like this happen. It's a reality of life. But just because we have disappointments in life doesn't mean life itself should be a disappointment. Disappointment gives us directions. It tells us where to focus our energy. Disappointment is information, and when used properly, it can be freeing and inspiring. When a door closes on us, we have to learn not to put more energy into that door.
Starting point is 00:01:39 And instead, go looking for new doors. There are infinite ones out there. And the chances are, they're better than the one you just left that's closed. So that's what we'll focus on this morning. And no matter whether you're currently dealing with disappointment, or you're feeling on top of the world, I know this episode will be helpful because it will reframe your expectations
Starting point is 00:02:05 and reactions to disappointment when it does arise. Let's take a couple of deep breaths before we get the day started. So inhale and fill all the way up as deep as you can into your belly. Hold, exhale. Let it all go. Again, inhale, fill all the way up.
Starting point is 00:02:38 Hold, exhale. One more. Inhale, filling even deeper this time. Hold and exhale. Now if you're in bed, it's a great time to roll over and make your way to standing up. All right, my friend, feel free to begin going about your morning. Whatever you'd like to do, you should do that. Stretches, brewing some coffee or tea, going for a walk. Allow me to be your morning companion. if you will.
Starting point is 00:03:34 And I'll tell you a little story. Remember at the beginning of this episode, I said I know the feeling of being beat down and wanting to just retract and curl up in bed. Well, it's true, and I had a moment like that not too long ago. At the time, I was frustrated with multiple things in my life. That's unusual for me,
Starting point is 00:03:59 if you can tell, I'm typically a pretty positive person. but nothing seemed to be going like I'd hoped. After a few days of introspection and being kind of bummed out, I realized that I was feeling beat down because my expectations were too high. I was disappointed in all of these different areas of my life because I'd been planning for a fairy tale. I'd been unrealistic. And I hadn't reached this fairy tale, of course,
Starting point is 00:04:30 so all of the hard work I'd been putting in had burnt my fire into a pile of ashes. Disappointed ashes. So I did the most obvious thing. I reframed my expectations. My expectations needed to be realistic. That way, I'd be way less likely to be let down. I forced myself to look at all of the possibilities.
Starting point is 00:04:57 And I realized that I was trying to do way too much, I couldn't have all of the things I wanted all at once. There wasn't time. So I was forced to cut lower priorities. But because of that, those higher priorities started getting more of my time. And shortly thereafter, new opportunities arose with those priorities I'd stuck with. It was such a great example of the saying, when one door closes, another one opens.
Starting point is 00:05:31 And it shows how dealing with disappointment, rather than just lingering in it, does bring new opportunities. Alexander Graham Bell said that when one door closes, another one opens. But we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we don't see the ones which open for us. Friends, we can't linger in our moments of disappointment. Otherwise, we're wasting precious time.
Starting point is 00:06:11 We're wasting the true gift of life. And we're continuing to waste energy on something that has already let us down. So when you find yourself disappointed, the solution is to assess. Take account of your expectations and all of the things that led to this disappointment. Re-calibrate your expectations and decide on a new way to focus your time and energy. The adjustment might be a big one, but it might not be. And then you have to pick yourself up and start taking action again, start living your life again. When one door closes, it's only diving back into life that we're able to find the newly open.
Starting point is 00:07:02 ones. Those new doors, they don't just appear magically. And the thing that's hardest is making it through the time in between. That moment when the old door has closed and the new open one hasn't shown up yet. Life will reward you if you're persistent and patient. Friends, if we want the best from life, We've got to give our best to life. We have to be prepared that sometimes life isn't always going to be the best, that doors will close on us, even though we gave them our best. But lingering at a closed door is going to get us nowhere. Look ahead.
Starting point is 00:07:52 You've got an open door in front of you right now. It's the door to a brand new day. It may not be exactly the door you were hoping for, but it is an open door. And if you go in, look around, and give it your best, you may just find that it leads you to the door you've always been hoping for. Well, that's all for this episode.
