Hi, everyone, and welcome to Wake Me Up.
I'm your host, Tyler, and this is the podcast where morning people are made.
Today, we're going to talk about follow-through.
When someone becomes successful, people often point to their quote-unquote talent as the cause.
And sure, we all have our strengths and fortays.
But that's not what separates the winners from the losers in the long game of life.
What determines your success is whether you follow through on what you start.
And since this episode is coming at the beginning of a new year, it seems like a perfect time to focus on this topic.
Let's go ahead and get this great day started.
You can begin by opening your eyes if you haven't done that already.
Enjoy some of that nice morning light.
And let's take a couple deep breaths together.
So inhale, pause at the top for just a second,
and then exhale, letting it all go.
And let's do one more just like that.
So inhale, hold at the top, and then exhale.
Wonderful.
Now, if you'd like to do a light stretch in bed,
then feel free to go for it.
Listen to your body and just provide what it needs right now.
Whatever you do, make sure you keep taking deep breaths for the next couple of minutes
because that will help you wake up.
Like I said earlier, we often point to people's natural talents or gifts as the reason for their success.
But that's a rather short-sighted analysis of what makes someone worthy of our acknowledgement.
In fact, it fails to give any credit to that successful person's most important skill,
following through on their goals.
You see, everyone has special talents and fortays.
A lot of people are artistically inclined or athletically inclined.
But just because you have a particular inclination doesn't mean you'll be successful at it.
Just because you're tall, doesn't.
doesn't mean you're automatically a great basketball player.
And just because you have perfect pitch doesn't mean you're automatically a great singer.
There are a ton of skills necessary to be great at both of these things, and they can only
be developed through practice and hard work.
Take the singer who has perfect pitch, for example.
They still have to train their vocal cords to do what their ear is hearing.
They have to train their mouth to form sounds properly,
and their lungs to provide a full, supportive breath.
They have to learn how to deal with stage fright,
and they need to know music theory.
None of those is a small task.
If you think about the basketball player,
well, they have to practice their jump shot.
They need to know the rules of the game and how to dribble.
Like the singer, they too need to know how to deal with the anxiety of playing in front of crowds.
And they also need to know how team offense and defense work.
Most importantly, they need to be in great cardiovascular shape, which requires daily commitment.
So when we rely only on natural talent to say that Michael Jordan, for example, is the greatest athlete ever,
or that Adele or Aretha Franklin is the greatest singer ever,
we are actually robbing them of what really got them to the level they reached.
Hard work, dedication, and commitment day after day, month after month, year after year.
That, my friends, is follow-through.
And that is what we should really respect about people,
who've achieved a degree of success.
So as we look towards a new day,
let's commit to ourselves that we will follow through today.
And I think it's just about time we get started doing that.
So take a deep breath and on your exhale, roll over, slide out of your bed,
stand up, and let's get this great day started.
