Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Wake Me Up, the podcast, Where Morning People Are Made.
I'm Tyler, and as usual, I'm your host.
One of our biggest motivators in life tends to be fear, but basing decisions off of fear
isn't a great way to spend our lives, constantly running away from things afraid.
In this morning routine, we'll work on disarming our fears and turning them into something positive.
Now let's go ahead and get started.
We'll begin today like almost every other day by taking the next few minutes to wake up and slowly get out of bed.
And all you need to do is listen to my voice and follow along.
So go ahead and open your eyes if you haven't already.
Take a deep breath in and then just let it all go.
No need to force it.
Just let it fall out.
Feel free to use this time to take a stretch in bed, move around or loosen up.
Anything that feels good to you, you can do that.
And while you do, I wanted to start today off with a little anecdote that's relevant for our topic.
In my first real job, I was working at a law firm.
I was a fresh young lawyer right out of law school.
And there was an older attorney at the top of my firm, who I worked with quite a bit.
And this attorney had a reputation for being difficult, as I soon learned myself.
I legitimately feared her.
The thought of her popping into my office unannounced even makes my heart jump now several years later.
I just couldn't understand why she was so much.
mean all the time. And I really wanted to disarm her somehow, for my own sake, really. So one day
she was talking about her career when she was a young lawyer. She was telling a story and noted that
she was the only female attorney in her firm at the time. Now, especially back then, law was a profession
almost exclusively of men. When she was telling this story, it struck me why she was. Why she
It could be so harsh sometimes.
When she was a young attorney, she was the only woman around in the profession at the time.
And not only that, she was young.
So nobody would have respected her or listened to anything she said.
They were probably mean and belittled her.
But that made her really tough.
And it lit a fire under her, which is what made her into a great lawyer.
So she was harsh to us at work because she wanted us to be good lawyers.
That's how she had become one.
So here I was, afraid of someone who really just wanted to help me.
That was her way of showing she cared, confusing as it might be.
Now, we didn't become best friends after all that,
but our working relationship was way more sustainable.
And it was all because I got out of my own worldview and into hers.
See, oftentimes we're afraid of things because they're unknown or uncertain.
We can counter that by seeking to understand and showing compassion.
So if there's something or someone you fear, whether it's your boss or losing someone you love
or failing at a dream,
Start by opening yourself up to it.
Show some compassion to that other person and to yourself.
You might just be amazed what's revealed.
Now, on that note, let's go ahead and get up.
Take a deep breath in, and as you exhale, roll over in bed, place your feet on the ground,
and make your way to standing up.
