Hi there, good morning, and welcome to Wake Me Up.
It's Tyler, your host, as always.
And I'm so glad to have you here with me.
As we look forward to a brand new day,
I hope you're excited for all of the things you can do with this opportunity.
There's probably a ton you'd love to do today.
Maybe you don't even have enough time to do it all.
How can you choose what to spend your time on?
How do we know if we're putting our efforts in the right places,
or if we're just wasting our time?
The pressure of that question can be a lot.
I get it.
I've been there, and I might even be feeling it right now as you listen.
But what I've learned through my own experiences,
is what I always try to remind myself when I feel this pressure,
that question of whether I'm doing the right thing with my time.
And that is to not put so much pressure on myself,
to have everything figured out.
There's no need to have a perfect plan and execute it precisely.
That's not even possible.
The important question is what feels right for me to do in this moment, for now?
You always have the freedom to change.
So in today's episode, we'll take away that pressure to have everything figured out.
And we'll just focus on doing what's right for you right now.
And let's start by just slowing down a little before the day begins.
With a couple of big, deep breaths.
So wherever you are, take an inhale and fill all the way into your belly.
Don't rush it.
hold it at the top
and then release
let it all go
just let it fall out
no need to force it
once more now
inhale
fill even deeper this time
hold it
release
now if you're in bed
it's a great time
to roll over
make your way to standing up
and get this beautiful day
started
now that we're all standing
let's pause for a moment here
and just take a scan of your body.
Go from head to toe.
Just taking note of how everything feels.
And once you've finished with that scan,
ask yourself, what does my body need right now?
What's it asking for?
What can I loosen up or bring some energy to?
And then, do whatever stretch or movement feels best for you right now.
Make sure you're in a safe space,
and only do movements that you feel able and comfortable doing.
I'll give you about a minute to explore that, starting now.
And remember, it's okay to not know right away what you should do.
If you do know exactly what your body's calling for, then that's great.
But sometimes we have to experiment a little to figure that out.
The answer isn't always immediately clear from the beginning.
So allow some time and space to learn yourself.
The only way we can learn what we need and how to provide it is through practice.
So use this time to do that.
We're about halfway through, and I'll be quiet now so you can enjoy the rest of this time to yourself.
Go ahead and finish up whatever movements you're doing.
Hopefully your body is a bit more awake and loose and feeling better now.
In lieu of a meditation today, I'm going to offer a story.
And if you're a regular listener, you know that I try not to make this show about me.
But my personal history is really well-fitting for this topic.
Because I was one of those people who wanted to have everything planned.
I wanted to be the best and have it all figured out.
And it was my desire to have everything figured out that actually led me to realize
I had basically nothing figured out.
You see, growing up, I had a lot of interests,
but the main one that stuck out was music.
At heart, I'm a creative.
But my first career was as a lawyer,
which is very uncreative.
And to make a long story short,
I liked the intellectual challenge of law,
and I had the skills to do it well,
but practicing law just made me miserable.
When I eventually quit, I had no idea what to do next.
But I did know that I wanted to have more creativity in my work.
And thankfully, that led me to what I do now, which is being a producer.
And I don't regret my time as a lawyer, even though it was a career that was unfit for me personally.
Quite the opposite, my time spent honing that set of skills has been a huge advantage in my current career.
And part of me will always be a lawyer.
Even though practicing law isn't what I should be doing forever, it was fitting at that point in life for me.
And it certainly didn't feel that way while I was going through it.
I was pretty unhappy.
But again, I had to learn what works for me and what doesn't.
What makes me happy and what doesn't?
What my most valuable skills and interests are and how they overlap.
That takes time, and it's not a straight path to find these answers, no matter what's your age or experience.
Because we are all changing beings.
We're not stagnant.
We have to ask, what's right for me right now?
And that answer is going to change all the time.
If you're listening to this saying, oh yeah, it's easy to change when you're young, but I'm old now and I don't have the time to.
Well, I hate to tell you, but you're wrong.
My 91-year-old grandma just decided to move across the world
to continue pursuing her life's work.
It was a really tough decision for her.
She's leaving all of our family.
But she decided that is what's right for her to do right now.
So if you want to make excuses about your age
or how much time you have or your responsibilities,
you should talk to my grandma.
Friends, that's why it's so important
to ask yourself routinely,
what's right for me today at this point in my life?
That's all that matters.
When something's not working for you anymore,
you'll know, you'll feel it.
And that's when you know it's time to adjust.
Time to try something different.
You always have the freedom to change,
to chase something new,
to be someone new.
And when the time for adjustment comes,
the way to figure out how to make that adjustment
is exactly the same.
By asking yourself,
what feels right for me today?
And then try it.
You might not find the answer right away,
but you're starting down the right path.
You don't have to have all the answers.
And truly, you can't.
Planning is helpful only insofar
insofar as it gives us a direction.
Things will always lead us to change from our initial course,
whether it comes from inside of us or something external.
So stop putting so much pressure on yourself
to fulfill every goal you've ever come up with.
Stop expecting to foresee every twist and turn
that life and love and a career are going to throw your way.
I promise,
You are on the right path.
If you keep asking yourself, is this right for me?
At least for now.
Well, that's all for today's episode.
Thanks for tuning in.
A big shout-out goes to Smriti for requesting this episode.
She is about to graduate, so everyone send her a virtual congratulations and a pat on the back.
