Hi there, and welcome to Wake Me Up, the podcast where morning people are made. I'm Tyler, your host, and I'm so glad that you've joined me this morning. Friends, let's face it, most of our problems in life come from other people. It can be a source of real frustration. I'm certainly not immune to it myself. I routinely find myself frustrated by the actions and words of others.
Starting point is 00:00:45 But our frustration can't be solved by the other person. We have no control over them. We can't change them. Today, we'll work on changing ourselves so that our problems with others don't make us angry, or upset and hold us back. Now, a beautiful day lies ahead. Let's not waste another moment.
Starting point is 00:01:18 Wherever you find yourself right now, just take a big breath in. Hold it at the top. And then exhale, let it all go, nice and easy. If you'd like to stretch or wiggle around to help wake yourself up, then be my guest. But we'll do a couple of stretches later on, So you can also feel free to just enjoy this last moment of peace and quiet before your day begins.
Starting point is 00:01:53 We're going to start this day by practicing letting go. And we'll use the breath to help with that. On the inhale, you'll just bring to mind something that someone did that bothered you. And on the exhale, you'll just blow it away. You'll let it float off with the wind. you don't need to carry that trouble. It's not your burden to bear. So let's get to it.
Starting point is 00:02:28 Take an inhale, again nice and slow, thinking of an example of when someone frustrated you, and then exhale and send that frustration far, far away. Really imagine releasing it, blowing it into the wind. Again, inhale, collecting. that frustration in the lungs, and then exhale, expelling it for good. Two more times. Think of something new this time. So inhale, collecting that negativity, and exhale, send it floating off far away. Last time, breathe in, gathering any of those remaining bits of frustration,
Starting point is 00:03:33 and then release them on the exhale. Let go. And just say, bye-bye. There's no need to hold on to that frustration for a single second longer. Friends, the trouble that others cause is not yours to deal with, even if it affects you. You didn't choose to receive that burden. And you can't control it. So it certainly doesn't deserve your time and effort. The best thing you can do is accept that it will be what it will be. whether you try to do something about it or not.
Starting point is 00:04:20 We're better off practicing letting go of the things we can't control and instead focusing back on ourself and our own pursuits, which we can control. We aren't in charge of others, but we are in charge of our own focus. So today, let's spend our time and energy managing that. I think that we'll find ourselves happier, more productive, and more at ease. There's a wonderful day beginning.
Starting point is 00:04:57 Let's not waste a single moment of it. So take a big breath in, as you exhale, roll over in bed, and make your way to standing up. Now that we're all standing, let's do a quick stretch to help wake the body. And you should only join if you're able. If you'd prefer to do something else, then go for it. We're going to start with our usual stretch, and then add a little extra on at the end. So inhale and reach your hands all the way to the sky.
Starting point is 00:05:50 Reach as far as you possibly can. And then on your exhale, fold forward at your waist. Let everything hang towards the ground, nice and easy. No need to push yourself first thing in the morning. I like to have a nice bend in my knee. That helps to release the lower back. And you can sit still if you want to, or you can sway side to side. You can move your arms around.
Starting point is 00:06:22 Do whatever feels best for you. And feel free to experiment with what that is. All right, now slowly begin to roll all the way back up to standing, vertebrae by vertebrae. And when you get there, reach your hands back up to the sky, reaching again as far as you can. But now let your right arm fall down by your side. Reaching your left hand up and over.
Starting point is 00:07:05 So you get a nice stretch on the left side of your body. Keep breathing while you do this. And on your next exhale, come back to center. Let your left arm fall down. Take another inhale, reach towards the sky with both hands. And then this time let the left hand fall down and reach up and over with the right. So you feel that nice stretch down the right side.
Starting point is 00:07:53 Again, remember to keep breathing here. And on your next exhale, come back to center, let both arms relax down by your sides. Roll your shoulders around, up and down. Again, up and down. Wonderful. Now, it's time for us to sit down and have a few minutes of meditation. So find a comfortable seat. And as always, grab water or use the bathroom along the way if you'd like.
Starting point is 00:08:42 Today, we're just going to take this time to let the mind unwind. We've already done some mindfulness, practicing letting go of our frustrations caused by others. So let's not overdo it. I'll give you a little more time to find your seat. And if you're already there, that's great. Just chill out for a moment. So hopefully by now you've found a seat. and that can be anywhere just not in your bed.
Starting point is 00:09:19 We don't want to go back to sleep at this point. And make sure you're sitting up nice and supported, but allow yourself to relax, try to release any tension you're holding, especially in those trouble spots. The neck, the shoulders, the hands, the face, the jaw. Take a deep breath in,
Starting point is 00:09:55 and then close your eyes on the exhale. So begin to settle in, scan your body for any tension, and just release that tension, breathe into it, and then exhale, try to let it relax. Once you've gotten yourself nice and comfortable, bring your attention back to the breath and just rest your focus there, feeling that rise and fall, no need to use any force with the breath. Most of all, we just want to focus on it being effortless and smooth. As you follow that breath, it will slowly begin to take you deeper and deeper. So we've settled in, and you can just hang out here. Allow your mind to wander and simply watch your thoughts as they go by. If you find yourself hung up on something negative, that's okay.
Starting point is 00:12:21 Don't let it frustrate you. Acknowledge the source of that negativity. And thank it. Thank it for the opportunity to practice letting go. For this chance to improve yourself. Take an inhale, collect those negative thoughts, and then exhale them away. Returning to the breath right after.
Starting point is 00:13:49 We'll be here for just another moment or so. Keep at it. You're doing great. Okay, slowly begin to bring yourself back to the room. Notice the chair or your seat beneath you. Notice the air in the room or any sounds going on around you. Take a big breath in, filling your lungs all the way. And on your exhale, slowly open your eyes.
Starting point is 00:15:34 Friends, remember that if someone does something to you today, that gets under your skin, you can take a moment for yourself and do that little breathing ritual. Inhaling, collecting that frustration, really feeling it, and then exhaling and releasing it. Remind yourself that it's not your burden.
Starting point is 00:15:59 It's not under your control. And instead, choose to focus in on what you can control, which is you, your reactions and your focus. And to that point, it's time for today's send-off. My friends, we can't change other people. If you've ever tried to change someone else,
Starting point is 00:16:29 you can probably attest, as I can, that it usually doesn't work well for either you or them. All we can control in this world is ourselves. All we can change is ourselves. So how can we operate in a world where others are constantly bumping into us, figuratively and literally, causing us problems and frustrations? Well, the easiest and perhaps only solution is to get better at letting go, to improve our own ability to let the words and actions of others wash right off of us, literally practicing this skill. of brushing off the haters. Other people are going to do what they're going to do.
Starting point is 00:17:23 They're going to believe what they're going to believe, regardless of who you are or anything you say or do. And to a degree, they should. You probably wouldn't listen to them, would you? So you really can't blame them for doing the same in regard to you. It's a crowded world. in all possible ways. We're going to bump up against each other,
Starting point is 00:17:51 whether it's intentional or not. So when that happens, remember, you can't change who that person is, where they're going, what they're doing, or what they care about. You can only change yourself. You can change yourself from someone who lets the outside world bother them
Starting point is 00:18:13 to someone who doesn't. Happiness lies within anyways. Your life is too precious to spend it bothered by someone else. So if you find yourself fed up with someone today, just take a big breath in, collect all of that frustration, and send it floating away into the wind.
Starting point is 00:18:39 Then return your focus to what you can control. what you can change, and what matters most. You. All right, that's all I've got for today, friends.
