Considering all that's going on in the world, I wanted to spotlight a black woman in today's episode. I've done it before, but I figure, why not again? And for quite a while, I've found Deshauna Barber to be particularly inspiring. For those of you who don't know, she won Miss USA in 2016. And I don't think anything could stop this woman if she put her mind to it.

So today, we'll look at how she does that. Let's go ahead and get started. It doesn't matter whether you're starting this episode from bed or if you're up and about already. If you are in bed, go ahead and take a deep breath. Roll over. and stand up. Make your way to a chair or somewhere comfortable. You don't need to do anything difficult.

But just go ahead and get out of bed. As I mentioned before, we're going to talk about Dashana Barber today. She had a pretty normal life, as it seems. She was born in Georgia to parents who were both in the military. So she was a military kid and moved all over because of that. She followed her parents' model and joined the Army Reserve at age 17. And she went to college at Virginia State University. But it was a random conversation she had in Target one day that would change her life.

During her sophomore year of college, a woman approached while she was shopping and asked, were you born in this country? Now, that's not only an odd question to ask, but a rather offensive one as well. Dishana took it in stride though and just answered, yes. The woman then proceeded to ask a range of personal questions. How old was Dishana? Was she married? Does she have kids?

Eventually, Dishana stopped the woman's barrage and asked, can I help you with something? It turns out, the woman thought Dishana could be the next Miss USA. At coffee the following day, she convinced Dishana to go for it. But the road was not simple. DeShanna lost the first pageant that she competed in. She lost in the second, too. Every year she went back, the third, the fourth, the fifth, the sixth. She lost every single one of them.

And this was just her state pageant, but DeShanna didn't stop. The next year, she went to. She went to her state pageant again for the seventh time. And this time, she won. That got her to Miss USA. And she won that competition too. She was the first member of the military to win Miss USA. And that got her to the Miss Universe competition,

where she placed in the top 10 worldwide. And this is all fantastic right. What I really love about Doshana is the advice she gives.
