Good morning, everybody, and welcome to Wake Me Up, the podcast where morning people are made.
I'm Tyler, your host, and I'm so pleased to have you here with me today.
In this quick motivational bit, we'll look at history.
how it's made, how it's remembered,
and how we're making it every single day.
Let's go ahead and jump right in.
If you're in bed, then take a deep breath in,
and as you exhale, slowly roll over,
and make your way to standing up.
It's a great time to get this fantastic day going.
And then everybody, we can take this moment
just to enjoy a big stretch.
Because this might be a big day for you, and it's good to be prepared for that.
You should do whatever feels best for you.
But if you'd like a suggestion, then I'd always recommend my favorite stretch.
And you do it by reaching your hands as high as you can towards the sky.
And then slowly folding forward at the waist into a forward fold.
I like to repeat it a few times and get into a little flow.
It helps me to wake my body up.
But you should do whatever you like the most.
And feel free to keep stretching if you'd like,
or have a glass of water, make your morning coffee,
go ahead and do your thing.
And while you do that, let's think about today.
It's yet another day in history.
While we're so absorbed in our day-to-day lives, it's easy to get lost in the routine.
The daily to-does and excitements, the happenings and relationships that are always coming about.
And this is all well and good.
We should be enjoying and focusing on the things in our day-to-day life.
That's where the action is.
But from time to time, it's important for us to zoom.
zoom out to take the 10,000 foot view of our daily lives.
Because when we're focused on the moment, it's easy to miss the forest for the trees.
We get caught up in the details and forget about the broad strokes that we're painting
on the canvas of our lives.
These are the ones that will be remembered most, both by us and by others.
I talk a lot on this show about dwelling on the past and the future
and why we shouldn't waste our lives away doing that.
And it's true, history is made every single day,
so we do need to pay attention while we're going through life.
But it's the big movements we make in life that we will remember most
and that those who follow us will remember us by.
Think about the history you know and remember.
The stories, people, and major events that have all threaded together to bring us to where we are now.
I recognize, it's true.
There are many things we don't know about history.
But we have a pretty good idea of it.
We know who the major players were, and we know roughly what their daily lives would have been like.
We know of generations that overcame unbelievable setbacks and problems.
Wars, economic collapse, slavery, famines, and geographical migrations.
We also know moments when we took massive steps forward, in science and medicine,
in human rights and the arts.
So today, as we zoom out and think about all,
all of the steps forward, backwards, and sideways
that humanity has taken to get us where we are now,
we remember the events and movements
that past generations brought about,
the ways they were able to improve their lives
and in turn, ours.
This leads to the question,
what will we be remembered by?
For the most part, history isn't a mystery for us,
anymore. We have writings and archaeology which can help us discern the lives of those
thousands of years before us. And nowadays, our actions and thoughts are recorded exponentially more
than they were even 20 or 30 years ago, much less a century or a millennium. This means that future
generations will remember us far more clearly than they are able to remember our prior generations.
Many of the things that we'll be remembered by are out of our individual control.
Those things that happen on such a broad scale that they affect the entire world.
I'm sure you can think of a few examples of that right now.
So if we can't control the occurrence of these kinds of these kinds of people,
of major events, what can we do to make sure that our generations are remembered positively?
Well, to me, there's one clear answer for that. And it lies in the only thing that we actually
control in life, our actions, how we treat ourselves and others. The one thing we can always
control, no matter the circumstances, is how we treat ourselves and those around us.
We can give ourselves the care and attention we deserve. We can do the small things to ensure
that we are happy and healthy. And in turn, we will be able to offer better care and attention
to everyone else we encounter. The last renaissance is known for bringing humans out of the
Dark Ages, and into an age of enlightenment in science, philosophy, and the arts.
That was roughly 500 years ago now.
To put it into perspective how far we've come since then, anyone today can do a quick
internet search and immediately access and learn the entire life's work of one of those
leaders of the Renaissance 500 years ago.
So what will our Renaissance be?
What will we be remembered for?
Well, the history books of the future will have a much better answer for that
than any of us do here today.
Much of it will come about without our choosing,
and history will write about how we reacted to it.
But what we can choose to be remembered for is how we act.
today and every day into the future.
We can create a renaissance of respect.
We can swipe a broad brushstroke
across the canvas of humanity.
One that paints a picture of life more positively.
One that's full of improvement.
And by doing that, we can create a better world.
one that endeavors to treat everyone and everything with the respect they deserve.
A world where we are all seen as valuable, equal, and worthy.
After all, we're in this together.
We're all crew on the same ship.
Whatever force you believe made you also made me,
and everyone else we share the world with.
So let's come together and show a little extra love towards ourselves and those around us.
Because one thing's for sure, history will remember us.
But it's up to us to determine what we're remembered for.
Well, that's all for today, friends.
Thanks so much for joining me here this morning.
I'll talk to you all next week.
And until then, go out and have a wonderful day.
