Hello, and welcome to Wake Me Up, the podcast where morning people are made.
Now let's go ahead and get started.
It doesn't matter whether you're beginning this episode while you're still in bed,
or if you're up and about already.
If you are in bed, go ahead and start taking some deep breaths to energize your body.
and maybe bring some gentle movements or stretches to get some blood flowing.
In this episode, we're going to talk about J.K. Rowling, the author of Harry Potter,
one of the most successful authors of the modern day.
Although her novels have reached all corners of the world, been made into blockbuster movies,
and touched the lives of many, J.K. Rowling didn't have a star-studded past,
In fact, her life was nearly in tatters.
Let's go back to 1990, when she first had the idea of a book about a boy who goes to wizarding school.
Later that same year, her mother died after a 10-year battle with multiple sclerosis.
She never even got to tell her mother about her idea for a book.
Soon after, she moved to Portugal.
to teach English as a second language,
where she met a guy, fell in love, and got married.
Sounds like things are starting to get better, right?
Well, a year later, in 1993, she had a child
and got separated from her husband.
She packed her bags and left and headed back to the UK.
Rowling slipped into depression.
She felt like a failure.
Her marriage had ended, and she was now a single mom without a job.
Rowling even contemplated suicide during this time.
She was living off welfare and described herself as being as poor as possible without being homeless.
So here she is at what probably seemed to be rock bottom.
Imagine the stress and the internal tension that she had in this period of her life.
But what did Rowling do about this?
She used it as inspiration.
Fuel for her fire.
Poor and jobless.
What was the one resource she still had?
Time.
And she made the most of it.
Completing the first Harry Potter story while living on welfare.
The things in her life that had caused her pain,
like the loss of her mother,
and the end of her marriage
are woven into the themes of her books.
The Dementors signify the darkness in her mind at the time.
And the loss of her mother is portrayed in Harry's loss of his parents.
She took bad things that happened to her
and made them work for her.
Two years after separating from her husband
and moving back to the UK,
a publisher picked up the first story in the Harry Potter series.
But even then, Rowling still had a day job.
It took another year for her to finish the second book, and that's when things took off.
And in that second book, Rowling gives us a really wonderful image,
perhaps showing a bit of herself in Fox, the Phoenix, who is fatally wounded helping Harry in the main quest of that book.
But Fox would rise again.
Being a phoenix, it rose from the ashes to lend a helping hand at later points in the series as well.
Now, I don't know what Rowling thinks, but I see her in that phoenix.
She used the toughest points of her life as her biggest assets.
She was at rock bottom and rose from the ashes.
