Now before our episode begins, here's a quick word from our sponsors.
Hey there, and welcome to Wake Me Up.
I'm your host, Tyler, as always.
and I'm so grateful that you chose to be here with me today.
This week, we've been talking about how to manage and overcome unhealthy impulses,
a really important topic if we want to live happy, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
We all have a destructive habit at some or multiple points in life.
Nobody is immune to this.
Humans are wired to seek pleasure,
and in many ways, that can be really helpful to us.
But there are tons of ways to seek that pleasure, especially nowadays in the technological age,
we can find pleasure almost instantly with nearly zero effort.
But we simply cannot find long-term fulfillment and happiness in those kinds of momentary pleasures.
As we've talked about in the other episodes this week, the key to overcoming unhealthy impulses
is redirecting the attention to something more positive and healthy
that fills the underlying need triggering that impulse
until the unhealthy impulse passes.
Remember, these impulses, like everything else in life, are temporary.
So I highly recommend you use these affirmations
in moments where you want to overcome a harmful impulse.
Doing them outside of those moments is also extremely helpful too,
because it prepares the mind with the ideas that you need to implement in those moments.
It takes lots of repetition to build a neural pathway that leads to an unhealthy impulse.
And so it takes a lot of repetition to overcome it for good too.
Stick to it, and I'm sure that you will.
Just as we're all capable of creating unhealthy impulses,
we are equally as capable of changing them.
and by listening to this episode today,
you're already one step closer to that change you want to make.
Now, if you're in bed,
use this moment to roll over and get up and out of bed.
We've got another great day lying ahead of us.
Don't let it slip by.
And once you're up and about,
you can do these affirmations in any way you'd like.
You can simply listen along as you go through your morning routine,
having a glass of water,
going for a walk, making your cup of coffee or tea, whatever it is that you like to do.
You can repeat them out loud or in your mind.
And if you'd like the deepest experience, then you can find a comfortable position,
close your eyes, and settle into a meditative state.
But no matter how you choose to engage in these affirmations,
let's begin by taking one deep breath.
So inhale and fill up.
all the way up, deep into your belly, hold at the top, and then exhale, release, just let the air fall back out.
Great, it's time to turn to our affirmations.
My happiness comes from long-term growth and achievement, not momentary pleasures.
I treat my mind and body with respect, power to change my habits and who I am.
I allow moments of discomfort to pass because I know they are temporary.
I am worthy of a healthy, happy, and fulfilling life.
I choose healthy habits.
I care for my body and mind as though they are a trusting child.
I am capable of great things.
I focus on what will bring me long-term fulfillment.
I seek to understand my deepest needs and desires.
and I fulfill them in healthy ways.
I have the power to overcome any challenge.
I am strong and resilient,
and every day I become more so.
I am proud of myself and how I'm growing.
I choose behaviors that align with the life I dream of.
Great.
Now let's go back through all of those one more time.
My happiness comes from long-term growth and achievement,
not momentary pleasures.
I focus on what will bring me.
me long-term fulfillment. I seek to understand my deepest needs and desires, and I fulfill them
in healthy ways of the power to overcome any challenge. I am strong and resilient, and every day
I become more so. I am proud of myself and how I'm growing. I choose behaviors that align with
the life I dream of. Fantastic. That finishes up our affirmations.
So let's complete them in the same way that we started with a deep breath.
So inhale, fill all the way up.
Deepest breath you've taken yet today.
Hold and then exhale and release.
If you had your eyes closed, then now's a great time to open them.
All right.
So I hope you enjoyed those affirmations.
I encourage you to come back and repeat these every time you have an impulse that you want to
control. If you haven't already done yesterday's meditation, I highly recommend that too. It will help
you understand the root need or desire that you're lacking, which causes the impulse to arise in the
first place. And remember, when an unhealthy impulse does arise, you have to place your attention
elsewhere. Otherwise, the desire for that impulsive activity will only grow. And don't just put your
attention on anything, find something else that fills the underlying need which the impulse is
rooted in, and do that healthier, more productive activity until the impulse passes.
If you start putting that system into practice, then you will see your unhealthy impulses
begin to shift and change into healthier, more productive habits that fulfill your root
needs as a person. This is not only going to make you a healthier person, a happier person, a happier
person, but it's also going to begin moving you towards your goals at a speed you wouldn't
even believe.
Tomorrow, I'll be back for a Mindful Minute episode, exclusive to Wake Me Up Premium, that talks
about the mind-body connection.
This is another important concept to understand when it comes to impulse control.
So if you're interested in that, follow the link in the show notes and grab a seven-day free
trial of Wake Me Up Premium.
Until the next time I see you, go out and have an absolutely fantastic day.
