Starting point is 00:00:01 This is a headgum podcast. Hey, mess around. Hey, folks. Welcome to another edition of The Mess Around. Today we have a very special episode. Hannah is, Hannah's busy traveling right now, as she does. Something she would do a lot while we were filming, new girl. While we were filming.
Starting point is 00:00:40 We'd be like, anybody seeing Hannah, we'd be like, oh. Because she is being paid for this week. Yeah, she's in the Bahamas. So we got Jake Johnson here filling in. I'm in his trailer right now. Yep. And I know we're supposed to talk about episode 615 glue. And we're gonna.
Starting point is 00:00:59 Which Jake is in the A story, so we got to talk about it. But we also need to talk about this big-ass trailer. I got a multi-room trailer. It's a little condo. What do you think? This is bigger than my first apartment. I'm not exaggerating. I walked in here.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Never have ever been treated this good. Really? On a production. I've never... I gotta say this is a dream job. Everybody's cool. BMO does. BMO gives me a big trailer.
Starting point is 00:01:24 Yeah. But besides that. We're doing Sunset P.I. It's going great. We're having a lot of fun. But you know what we're really here for? What? New girl.
Starting point is 00:01:34 New girl. But before we get into New Girl, when does Sunset P.I. come out? February. February? That's a long fucking time from now. We're going to do the whole season. They're going to have it all edited before we come out,
Starting point is 00:01:44 which is nice. Oh. Okay. We're going to have a finished product. Okay. So what have you been up to lately besides shooting this show? I feel like you have another show you were shooting, too. Well, I filmed Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, which was the Apple Show.
Starting point is 00:01:59 Yep. What did you think of it? I only watched the first five episodes. You did? Yeah. Did you get through five? Five. You didn't text me.
Starting point is 00:02:05 Good job. I'm proud of you. Because I didn't finish it yet. You didn't text me. Wow, it's so nice to see your work. I didn't watch Spider-N-Marc. Exactly. I haven't seen it.
Starting point is 00:02:14 I don't want to do anything Yeah, this is my, why would, why would I text you? Midway to do. Why would I text you a good job if I didn't necessarily feel that way? You thought I did it back? Talk freely. Talk freely. I just think, I just think I've seen you do better work.
Starting point is 00:02:32 Really? No. It was good, it was good. But, you know, it's, I was looking at you. I was like, I was, I was into the character. First of all, the show was hard to, it was a little. A little jump, it was a little jump. It was a little jump.
Starting point is 00:02:44 It was a little jump. jumpy, you know, people dying in bathtubs and shit, no spoilers. But I was like, that's wild. Because all the camboys that I talk to, what happens? When you speak to the camboys, what happens? I don't know what you mean. I said something I should have stopped and I kept going. Why?
Starting point is 00:02:59 What are you afraid of? Be honest, be yourself. Fucking Murray, whatever his name is, coming to murder me. Murray Bartlett, it's a bad man. He's a very bad man. You know what I mean? Well, what have you been up to, Lamar? Oh, when are we doing Garfield together?
Starting point is 00:03:13 It should be with your team Yeah, it should be with your team They're ready to shoot or record whenever you are And you can do it from home, which is good I can. Yeah. Actually, maybe they might make you go in because you don't have the full set up. I see some tithes?
Starting point is 00:03:25 Sorry. Put them up against the mic. Oh my gosh. Yeah, I've been busy, man. Just been busy with a canceled show. I can't believe it got canceled. Shit, you're telling me. It's insane. I don't know this business as well as I thought I did.
Starting point is 00:03:43 Well, is it, oh, can we hear some Nick Cage starts? Oh, man. You can speak freely on Nick Cage. Yeah, Nick is a... He's a wild guy. He's a wild guy, but in the best possible way. Hello, if this is the second time you're hearing this, it's because we had a technical issue.
Starting point is 00:03:59 Lamorne is in my trailer. This is Jake Johnson. We're at Sunset PI. If this is the first time you're going on a weird start. Well, let me tell you why I'm here. Because Hannah Simone has the gall. The gall. Unmitigated.
Starting point is 00:04:13 to leave my guy Lamorne without a partner in crime. This is half hers. So this is my friend Lamorne reached out to me and he said, hey Jake, I'm in a tough spot. And I go, what is going on? He said, my partner Hannah decided to go on a fucking vacation. And Lamorne was in Nashville last night. He flew with this guy. This motherfucker won an award.
Starting point is 00:04:39 A few awards. And I'm about to get another one. What else have you? Critics Choice Comedy Award. Is that true? Yeah. For what? November 16th for my work.
Starting point is 00:04:47 In what? Spider-N-War. You got nominated for Critics Choice? Yeah, I'm winning the Comedy Award. Is Spider-Noir a comedy? Yeah. We're in the comedy category. Do they give rewards for shows that got canceled?
Starting point is 00:05:01 Yeah, they got, uh, we won 11 Emmys. We got to get them for 113-15. Did you win five Emmys? Yes. And then they cancel this. That's cold-blooded. That's cold-blooded. That is amazing.
Starting point is 00:05:13 That's cold-blooded. I'll tell you what it shows is there is a disconnect. I was making fun of awards this morning with Dan. We were calling them the Blockbuster Awards because there's such a disconnect for what the business is excited about in terms of what we celebrate. And what gets to stay on television and make money. If you watch CBS, you have like, we're all like, dude, the business is over. And on CBS, they're like, this is a 10-year run in show. CBS is thriving.
Starting point is 00:05:43 And then we're like, so I'm doing this streamer. And you're like, nobody in the world has watched it. My Apple show, I go, when people calling, we're here to help, I'll go for a while. It's like, hey, have you heard of maximum pleasure guaranteed? And the callers, like, I haven't. And I'm like, you're calling in my podcast. We've discussed it here. And you're just like, what the fuck?
Starting point is 00:06:06 So this one is going to be a Lamar tonight. And also for the we're here to help audience. We're dropping this on a Friday. And the reason is, it's me and Lamarne. It says us, too. We're going to drop it after. So everybody, if you have not checked out the mess around with Hannah and Lamorne, it's a rewatch. Season, do you guys do the first seasons with Zoe two, or is that under a different umbrella?
Starting point is 00:06:26 Different umbrella. So here we are. And again, Jake, I appreciate you taking the time to, uh, from your very busy schedule. But I do want to talk about this trailer. Please. This is, this is a house. It's a nice trailer. It's a very nice.
Starting point is 00:06:41 NBC Universal does it right. I love filming on this lot. Have you ever filmed on the lot here? I have. I have it. I have. Can you get me, because I know you have an insight
Starting point is 00:06:51 with all the people. Everybody loves Jake Johnson. Everybody loves Lamar Morris. I was just talking to Charlie Day about you. Oh, yeah? He goes like this. This is more cool. I go, yeah, he's very cool.
Starting point is 00:07:01 He goes, I love him. He's such a talented actor. And I go, yeah. What do you mean? I go, what's the part you're looking for? Maybe somebody else could do it. He said, who? And I go, there's just cheaper options, I guess.
Starting point is 00:07:15 Langston Kerman. Jackie J. Is Lankston here? He's cool. He is cool. I like him. Where he at? Why his trailer don't look like?
Starting point is 00:07:24 Lansing, what Lengstyn's trailer looks like? It's cool. It looks just like this. So, Jake, let's just dive in. Let's just dive in. No, you're talking about Lankton. Yeah, I'm really curious. What are you implying?
Starting point is 00:07:38 That what? That he doesn't have a trailer this size. So you're almost. saying like this would be for blank and his would be for blank? What are you saying, sir? All I'm saying is he is an accomplished guy. Jane Levy's trailer is really nice. Mayor Shalabay's
Starting point is 00:07:51 trailer's really nice. Yeah. Keith David's and Langston's. Please please tell me Keith David has a massive trailer. Got a little hole in the wall on the other side. I don't know. Of course they got nice trailers.
Starting point is 00:08:09 You nuts? Because I... I'm David's here today, the king. Dude, I would love to meet that guy. After we finish this, we'll come in. He's the best. So we're diving into episode 615, glue, right? Right.
Starting point is 00:08:22 We may not get through the whole thing. We're going to. We may not. Because I know for a fact one of us has seen it. I've seen it. Did you just rewatch recently? Yeah, I watched it on the plane. So Star Breaking, it was directed by the great Trento Don.
Starting point is 00:08:35 That's right. Marquita Robinson wrote this episode. This is a very, very, very, funny episode. A lot of pepperwood in this episode. Okay, so basically two big things are happening in this episode. Reagan convinces a bookstore to sell copies of the Pepperwood Chronicles, but this means Nick will have to do a reading, and we know he can't read. He has to do the reading that day. And Winston recruits Schmidt and C.C. for a very elaborate plan to propose to Allie. You know what the first thing I remember about the Pepperwood Chronicles, and it is genuinely
Starting point is 00:09:04 cool. Olivia Rodriguez was one of the girls. That's right. That's right. Yeah. And it It was three girls, and they were all pretty good of actors. And we did a scene where it was Zoe and I in those three. And then my daughters and I got into her show. I can't remember what it's called now. It was her and this other girl. They play like best friends in like a YouTube house back in the day. And I remember being like, okay, she can act.
Starting point is 00:09:29 That's why she wasn't nervous. And then she had her eruption. Oh, yeah. And so that's actually a really great part about New Girl, the guest stars. We had the best guest stars. Unbelievable that you wouldn't even imagine, especially where they are today. Joey King. Joey King, that's right.
Starting point is 00:09:43 Yeah. Let's try to list top of head. Joey King. I'm always going to go wriggle. I'm always going to go Justin Long. I'm always going to go Dennis Farina. Oh, my God, yes. Because of you and me and him.
Starting point is 00:09:54 Do you remember, oh, it was the three of us. Do you remember in, I think it was virgins. When you, me and him were sitting there and we were rehearsing a scene. And he comes down and gives my character a big talk. I can't remember if you were in the room, but I think you were. Yeah. And after rehearsal, the whole crew applaud. Were you there for that?
Starting point is 00:10:13 I probably was. I think I was. Never seen that in my life. He's sitting on the bed in the hotel room. Yes. And he gives like a speech about like, you know, what life's about. The whole crew applauded at rehearsal, till this day, I've never seen it. You've never seen the episode or you've never seen a crew applaud.
Starting point is 00:10:27 No, I've never seen a crew applaud a rehearsal. You've never been on set with me. I've been on set with you so much. I've never seen them. That's in the beginning when I wasn't good. I've never seen an audience applaud at the premiere of things you've been in. That's not. That's not true at all.
Starting point is 00:10:42 You know, I get those 15-minute stand in ovation. You've never gotten a 15-minute stand ovation. Backed. When? Backed. When? Do the math. Run down all the things in your head.
Starting point is 00:10:54 Okay. Yeah. Yeah, like right there. Game night. Fifteen minute. What are the movies you've been in? I think of Emmys. I know you're on Fargo.
Starting point is 00:11:08 Oh, you'd made that one movie with Vin Diesel. Yeah, yeah, yeah. People were applauding at home because the pandemic screwed up people's abilities to clap. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. What else? I did a straight-to-camera roll film. What's straight-to-camera roll? He's recorded with your phone.
Starting point is 00:11:29 That's not a movie, man. It's between you and your ex. And I better-ha-ha-ha-ha. She clapped. She made a clap. No, you were clapping. Oh, my gosh. Let's get into this goddamn episode.
Starting point is 00:11:42 Okay, so Pepperwood Chronicles. It's legacy and how it shows up in your world today. Okay, so people talk about this with you all the time, I'm sure. When you go out, people are asking you about the Pepperwood Chronicles in particular. This episode right here is probably, it's not the start of it. But it was the first time of your character. Season 6 was when they decided the writers came up with a really funny idea, and that is that Nick, while he's writing to the best of his ability, becomes a young adult novelist and a star.
Starting point is 00:12:16 Yeah. And this is right before, this episode ends with him realizing there is an audience for it. But somebody's strong in this one, and that is the great Megan Fox. Oh, yeah. Megan Fox came into our show like a goddamn firecracker. Yeah. She came, Zoe was having her first daughter. So we lost Zoe for, I think it was four episodes.
Starting point is 00:12:42 It was a lot. It was a lot. It might have been six, or there might have been like hiatus weeks, but it was a chunk of time. And there was a lot of fear and a lot of panic. The studio, I remember being really scared because, you know, and I've really thought about it as time's gone on. But she really was the kind of the engine of that show. We as the guys have gotten a lot of credit for it. But she really carried the show.
Starting point is 00:13:06 Oh, absolutely. And so when she was leaving, there was fear and when Megan came in and crushed, that's when I remember feeling like, oh, you know what you could do? This show could go on for 20 years. Yeah. It was like, Megan's strong.
Starting point is 00:13:22 Yeah. If she leaves and somebody else comes, I bet they're going to be strong. And I remember thinking like, oh, there's a world where... You just swap characters out. When people, somebody can go. If somebody wants to go do a job, go do it. As long as you got the core group there.
Starting point is 00:13:35 Yeah. This thing could live. Yeah, but, We wouldn't win, and this is interesting that you bring this topic up, because when the folks at home have asked if we were doing a reunion, now that I got you here personally. Let's talk honestly about this. Let's talk honestly about this.
Starting point is 00:13:52 I finally got you here, Jake. Because the fans out there, one, think I don't like them because of some of the BS you put out there. And they think that you may have tried to sleep with Jennifer Lopez because of some of the BS that I put out there. Thank you for saying that. I'm sorry, that's on me, that's my bad. For me, that's on me for saying that you don't like the fans. Yeah, because I love the fans.
Starting point is 00:14:14 But should we talk a little bit about how Max Greenfield fucked all this up? He definitely did. Because I will say, it started when I was doing self-reliance. I reached out to Lamor and as a friend, and I said, hey, man, will you come help me promote this? And he said, of course. So we got in a bed together. Chill, bro. We did.
Starting point is 00:14:34 Chill, bro. Yeah, but people were watching the, what? So Lamar and I got in a bed together for a little thing called Reviews in bed or something. Something like that. And we had a lot of fun and we started talking about when we do press for other stuff because we did so much together. That was really the big beginning of press for you, for me, for Max,
Starting point is 00:14:59 Damon. And we did so much together and we made it so fun that we were like, what if we just started trying to, when we were doing press connect. Yeah. And help each other out. And I don't know who started it, but one of us threw a dagger. Comedically, and I think it, all I remember, and I might have started, I don't remember. I just remember during your Emmy campaign, I had, I was going through kind of like a quieter period.
Starting point is 00:15:27 And so I wasn't even like checking stuff. And I started getting so much heat about not doing the reunion and being at first like, what is happening? I was like, this fool is using his Emmy campaign to come after me. And then my big one was the Today Show. That's when I felt like I got my revenge.
Starting point is 00:15:51 Yes, you did. Because it was spread too. Dude, it was like, Lamourne can't do the reunion because he doesn't respect you at the Today Show. I was like, wait, what? What does that happen? Well, I'll tell you what happened there is they didn't warn me that we were going to do a Lamar and.
Starting point is 00:16:08 So I was just talking and on the Today Show, as you know, those shows are live. Yeah. So I'm sitting there with Al Roker and the rest of the team. And then they go, can we show you something? And I see you. And I'm like, what is this guy going to say? And then I think it was the Jennifer Lopez. Where it's, I'm like, there's a real chance.
Starting point is 00:16:32 Jennifer Lopez is going to hear about this and go, what? And then I just started talking. And you know, you just start going. Yeah, it's the morning show. And then it finished and I was like, hmm. You know what's so funny about that one? Is that people said that your morning show interview trumped the one you and Max did. When you were like, they were like, they were like, we didn't think that this could be topped.
Starting point is 00:17:01 But now this one may have topped. Like, this is so unhinged. I've been getting loose in press, man. I don't care anymore. You kind of have to. I think it's so stupid. Not stupid. I think it's effective.
Starting point is 00:17:13 Like, it's important to get the messaging out. But the idea of taking press for a TV show or a movie seriously is so goofy. And seeing these actors talking about their performance as if what they're doing, and I think our business matters, I think entertainment matters. We all saw in the pandemic when we don't have enough entertainment, we get weird. Yeah, very weird. But we are just distractors. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:37 What did you say? I said the stuff I did. What do you mean? I got myself into some stuff. I'm like, what? Oh, my God. Like what? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:17:50 I'm like, just really curious. What kind of stuff? Man, okay. So, you know, sometimes during that pandemic, it would rain, right? Yeah, I guess it rained. It was over like a year and a half. Yeah, but sometimes it would rain. You know how I knew it was going to rain?
Starting point is 00:18:05 No. Because I did a little rain dance outside. I'll go outside. And I'm going to dress up like a... Don't stop, cut. Messing around. Okay. And we are brought to you by Wayfar.

Starting point is 00:22:02 slash Gill sent me to save 50% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code Gil sent me. So in this episode, I remember Nick goes for a run and everyone knows his signal and something is wrong except Reagan.
Starting point is 00:22:18 He tells Jess he submitted the Pep Word Chronicles to a publisher and it got rejected. He thinks his career is over. He's too ashamed to tell Reagan. This is This one was interesting because it's, Reagan coming into the loft is understanding that we do shit differently. Yes. She's like, I don't understand.
Starting point is 00:22:37 Him running is healthy. That's exactly right. And then Winston comes in screaming like, oh, my God. Oh, my God. So they know him. They know that it is weird. You know what I mean? So Jess, obviously, they're still hinting at the they will date eventually.
Starting point is 00:22:51 Jess knows all the right things to say. She knows his mood. But what was her thing with getting high again? It said Jess is still high, but no. Nick isn't anymore. I remember that now. What did they get high on? Where are you reading this? Oh, you jumped down.
Starting point is 00:23:03 Oh, sorry. Because the books. Remember they were using the glue of the books? Yeah, yeah. That is what happened. That's right. That's right. So the glue of the books. Now, guys, like I said, this episode is going to be a little different.
Starting point is 00:23:15 Okay. We might talk about the episode. But yes, it was the glue of the books. I remember Reagan saying, hey, this says you got to open this. You can't even use this glue in a backyard. Right. You just got to be in an open field in order to use this glue. Have you, I mean, you're, you know, a white guy from, you know, Chicago.
Starting point is 00:23:34 I'm sure you've huffed glue before. What's that like, no, I said you're a white guy from Chicago. Black people don't huff glue. What are black people do? Like in a certain neighborhoods? I mean, it depends. See, we have a... We don't huff glue.
Starting point is 00:23:57 Eye off by no, that's for kids. That's Elmer's. That's for kids. Putting an old nigger name Elmer up my nose. You know what I did do? That's a very white guy who was 14. Look. I scraped a banana peel once and I smoked it.
Starting point is 00:24:13 Because I heard you can get high off it. How did it work out? I probably faked that I had a buzz. This shit's got me slipping everywhere. Yeah, I'm getting crazy. And then I went to the girl to have a crush on it. I was like, and then Lily. She said, you're not it.
Starting point is 00:24:36 And I went like that. I'm sober. Back to old Jakey Jake. Oh, my gosh. Okay. So, yeah, so we're just going to dive in. We're just going to stay in this A plot, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:47 So what's happening here is you need 30 copies. You need to make 30 copies. Jesse breaks out the old arts and crafts kit, and she whips up 30 copies. They get high on the glue. Okay. Now, just, just that,
Starting point is 00:25:01 Reagan is kind of fearful still of how to talk to Jake, to Nick. She doesn't know how to speak to him, you know. But like I said, this is setting up the will they won't they situation because Jess right on time knows exactly what to say. Let me ask you a question. What do you think Megan Fox's strong suits as an actor on this show were, and what do you think Zoe's strong suits were as an actor on Newgirl? Megan can be very deadpaned.
Starting point is 00:25:31 And she plays it beautifully. And the beautiful thing about that on our show is that most of the time she's in a scene with, yeah, obviously you, but which is a crazy, you're a crazy character. So is Jess. Jess is a wild character. So you need that balance. And she does it well. She does it really well. The timing is there.
Starting point is 00:25:53 And when you're in a room full of crazy people, you need that sedacus. You need that baitment energy. She does have it. And she could also, similar to those guys, she can hit a joke. Oh, 100%. I was kind of, I was honestly really impressed with Megan. Yeah. Not just as an actor, but as a, she was so fun.
Starting point is 00:26:15 I've been disappointed. I tried to reach out a little bit after her as like a bit. Because we ended up, we had a bunch of bunch of really fun hangs where she believes some crazy ass shit. She's a wild lady. Oh, I know. And she would tell me she would sit out. her hammock and I wait for the aliens to come. And I'm like, Megan.
Starting point is 00:26:34 They probably showed up. But I'm also like, I want her acting more. I think she's funny. I was like, I wish I was like, I wish I could get in touch with her to do more bit like come do a fucking thing. You're so funny. No, she's awesome. She's great.
Starting point is 00:26:46 That's the one thing I always said about her. Her on set even outside of this performance. She's just, some of her stories were so crazy. I agree. Some of them I can't talk about. You want to hear a true story from my dad before he died? Yeah. So,
Starting point is 00:27:00 fuck, Jennifer Lopez. He's his RIP. My father's passed away and Lamar makes jokes, I guess. My dad's passed away too. Good. He did it to get away from you. He was already away from me.
Starting point is 00:27:16 He's talking about. He probably did it because you got older and you're like, I want to collect. Tell me your story about your dad because you started insulting my dad. But just get back to your dad. So my dad. My dad saw the episode where my character kisses Megan Fox.
Starting point is 00:27:33 My dad had prostate cancer. When you have prostate cancer and they remove your prostate, something happens. Do you know what happens? You just everywhere. You can't get hard. You dick is dead. Completely. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:48 By removing it, you stay alive, but your dick dies. It's so funny to gamble to see if we're still working. We're still working. And so after that episode, I got a call. And he goes, oh, Jesus. And I go, what? And he goes, this is unbelievable. My stupidest kid, that's you.
Starting point is 00:28:23 He goes, somehow you go out to California. You get a job as an accident. I don't know how. Then I'm watching a television show, and I see my son next to a million Fries, she's a 10. He's like a four. Then you guys kiss. Jay, my dick had been dead since the surgery.
Starting point is 00:28:47 It came to life. Oh, no. Oh, no. RIP, a great one. Miss him. He got hard looking at his son. No, no, no. I got a feeling.
Starting point is 00:29:03 He also had a great joke. Oh, yeah. Because he got Parkinson's after the prostate. Okay. And he goes, the timing is so unfortunate. And I'm not positive he was making a joke. And I go, what do you mean? He goes, yeah, I got Parkinson's.
Starting point is 00:29:18 And I was like, it's a disgusting disease. He goes, my hair is shaking all the time. And I go, yeah, and he goes, but because of the prostate, my dick is dead. Could you imagine if it wasn't? I just stick it in my paint. And I went, that's interesting. He's like, I'm not moving it. I wish I had prostate jokes with my dad before he died.
Starting point is 00:29:44 He just kind of died, you know. Anyway, enjoy these ads. Anyway, draft kings. Okay, so, yeah, so basically we get to the bookstore. Yes. These are one of the, this is some of the funniest Jake performances is when it's like, okay, Jake's going to perform and it's just a microphone in you. You've done it a few times on this show. And I think before I watched it, I was like, oh, shit, he's got to go up to the podium and speak.
Starting point is 00:30:19 I was like, this is going to be funny. And it was so stupid. It was so stupid. To me, like, do you get, do you feel liberated in those moments? Or is it just feel like another scene? Or you're like, okay, yeah, now I get to like do a full bit. Well, I think, and you and I have talked about it, but I think we both love performing with other actors so much.
Starting point is 00:30:39 But the last thing I ever want to do is steal or be somebody who's not a good scene partner. Like if you're playing basketball, you don't want to just be shooting. So you're like, I like making sure both of us are in the groove. When you're alone, you don't have to take care of anybody. Right. So you're like, and you don't have to think about somebody that you don't have to go like, well, if I do that, it gets steamrolling. Yeah. And so like if Vince Vaughn and John Favreau together, he can steamroll because John Favreau knows how to perfectly play against it.
Starting point is 00:31:09 But if somebody doesn't know how to perfectly play against it, they just get dominated in a scene. Oh, yeah. And you see those scenes, they're gross. Yeah. And then both people look bad. You're kind of like, you're not running the right offense. 100%. And so whenever there's a scene where it's, I'm alone doing a thing.
Starting point is 00:31:27 Everybody else's coverage is a whole different thing. And I'm not waiting for the reaction. It's not a rhythm game. It's not that I feel liberated. I just feel like I know I'm not going to step on anybody's toes. So now I'm just looking for the rhythm of this piece. And once I find that, which most of like on this, with Trent, I guarantee Trent was helping find. That once you find, you're like, oh, this is the game we're playing.
Starting point is 00:31:52 Then you get to just, and you do it too. It's like, once you know what the bit is. Now let's just attack him. Complete idiocy. But you started doing, and we've talked about it off camera, but once you started doing, and I do, I said it before, but I think it was based off that guy who did the, uh, um, the rap on that morning show. Oh my God. Remember, we watched that video together where it was, would you like to do some spoken word now? And he goes, do you remember it?
Starting point is 00:32:23 Will you do it? I forget how it went. But he just started rapping. and he just stopped. And then he starts staring. And then she goes, no, he goes, can I start over? And like his rap was you go like,
Starting point is 00:32:37 every day, every day is a Sunday. And then he goes, guys start him, and she goes, we're alive. And he just dies and tries again. And so Lamourne started doing that. And that became, in my opinion, a big part of Winston. Oh, 100%.
Starting point is 00:32:50 100%. Oh, you know, because, again, being new to television and, you know, this being my first show. I was very cautious of how I walked because I was like, this is a well-oiled machine. The pilot's great. These characters have been developed for years.
Starting point is 00:33:07 Winston's new. I just want to fit in the pocket of what the writers are saying, and I wasn't comfortable. And it wasn't until I started being just going for it. Just going for it. And I was like, oh, they can't. Never tell you the story of why I knew I wasn't going to get fired? I knew I wasn't going to get fired is because they had Damon on the show.
Starting point is 00:33:26 Most of the time, TV, you know, you got your white characters and you may have a black character in there. This one was a little different. We had brown. We had black in the, you know. So I was like, okay, but they had Damon. Damon had to go. They opened up casting for every ethnicity for Winston. Agreed.
Starting point is 00:33:45 I was, I ended up the choice. So black guy leaves, black guy comes in. Black Twitter was like, what y'all saying? What y'all doing? Fine. But we're moving up. What was Black Twitter saying? It was like, oh, they get rid of one black guy.
Starting point is 00:34:00 They bring another black guy in. Black Twitter doesn't know how contracts work? It didn't have to be a black guy. They don't know the audition process. They didn't know that it was open to everybody. I just happened to be the person who booked it. Was Black Twitter mad that it was another Black guy? No, but it was like, we got our eye on you.
Starting point is 00:34:15 You know what I mean? They just need to fill the quota. Understood. Okay. I need to fill the quota, right? Which has an active. Is Black Twitter now called Black X? Black X.
Starting point is 00:34:24 It could be. It could be. Or Black, or Black. No, it's black threads now probably. But anyway, so what I thought to myself was, you know what, if I fucked this up, they could fire me. I remember you used to tell me you would have dreams of getting fired. Yeah, I was like, God, I just couldn't find the rhythm.
Starting point is 00:34:41 I was scared. And so I thought to myself, they're not racist people. And they don't want to look racist. If they fire me, it's going to look so fucked up. So I was like, I'm here, baby. But that was not season one. That was like season two. Because I remember you and I had an episode in the grocery store where we were slapping each other.
Starting point is 00:35:02 Yeah, that was season one or two. That was season one. And you and I were talking because it was the first time that Max or Zoe weren't in the story with us. And our joke in the van was, this is where everybody goes to the bathroom. Yeah. So for me, that's how I knew I was good on the show. And I'm glad I got to stick around to it. And when did you feel like you started finding it?
Starting point is 00:35:27 Probably season three. So this is an interesting Winston storyline because it's not the prank side of Winston, but it's basically that. Like he's being silly. He's asking Schmidt and Cici for help with his proposal because he's going to propose to Allie. Allie played by the wonderful Nassim Padraud. And, you know, he's like, you got to meet me at this bar. Here's the plan. Now, Schmidt and Cici are very excited about.
Starting point is 00:35:57 this. They're like, they're down. They're down to help them out. But you got to know, especially if you're a new girl fan, you got to know, even if you haven't seen this episode. At this point, you know Winston is, he ain't shit sometimes. So you should have known like this was going to a place that wasn't where it seemed. He puts them through this whole thing. He basically sets up an entire maze of situation. Hey, I need you to take it to your house. I need you to act like you're going to be painting, which is a very funny situation because you know how they feel about their house. You know, they don't want regular people painting their house, right? So obviously, Ali's kind of, it knows something's going on. And what I liked about this, this was like,
Starting point is 00:36:35 we see it a little bit is that this is one of the first time, not first times, but this was a good, like, C.C. and Schmidt comedic back and forth. Because they were basically stalling by saying they have marital issues. And, you know, she's saying Schmidt does cocaine, he has a gambling problem. You know, to me that was one of the funniest back and forth because you don't really get you get a chance to see Hannah do that much comedy that much on this like broad back and forth bits
Starting point is 00:37:04 and so this was really cool to see and I thought they crushed it but as you all know it ends up in Winston basically going them waiting for him to propose it looks like it's time for him to propose he gets down on one knee to tie his shoe then he gets up he hands or something that looks like a box but it was a
Starting point is 00:37:24 vitamin. And he gets back down on one knee to tie the other shoe. And then he runs over to the car and he was like, what do you guys still doing here? Like waiting for you to propose. He's like, oh, this is just phase one of 20. And yeah, so this is one of those episodes too that we get a chance to see Winston act like a complete idiot and everybody else kind of just in this particular story, the B story, got a chance to showcase the shit that they do well as well. And that is the end of the show. So, Jake, do you think we finished it? Do you think we got it?
Starting point is 00:37:58 Do you think with all of this stops? I think we did get it. I think the takeaways for this, I'll go A story, then you go B story, is I think Megan Fox did so great on our show. I think going back to the strong suits, I think what Zoe doesn't get enough credit for is being the rock that the whole kind of show kind of leaned on. I think the A story is really fun. I love the Chronicle stuff that they started doing.
Starting point is 00:38:26 Whenever the writers would find a new game and then spend a few episodes on it, it was always fun. So I think it was a really strong. And Trent O'Donnell, our director, who probably, I think, did 40 or 50 episodes. He did a lot. You did the most. You did the most. You would start seeing when you watch episodes. If you're having fun watching or rewatching, you want to do it again, start looking for which ones Trent O'Donnell did because they have their own flair to him.
Starting point is 00:38:51 Oh, yeah. I think the B story, some of my takeaways is that Lamorne's a hell of a performer. Because when I was watching it, I was dying laughing at the shit that I was doing. Did you die laughing when anybody else did anything, be honest? Die laughing? I die. I smile.
Starting point is 00:39:07 Yeah, I was like, that's funny. But when I was up there, dog. When I'm... Messing around. Also, the Dalop's going to be on tour in early November, November 3rd through the 13th. We're going to be in Sydney, Melbourne. a couple times, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide, and Perth. Come join us.
Starting point is 00:39:26 Go to dolloppodcast.com. You're going to try to do a special? Yeah. Really? Mm-hmm. Let's give them a little one-minute taste of who you are as a stand-up. Who I am is a stand-up. Ladies and gentlemen, Lamourne, Moray!
Starting point is 00:39:41 Hey, hey, hey, bitts ain't shit, right? You got a problem with bids. Give me a little bit. Okay. Ladies and gentlemen, Jake Johnson. Have you ever been eating a sausage exhaust? Pretty good, said. Pretty good intro.
Starting point is 00:40:04 Pretty good. Pretty good. Talk about Comic-Con. What are you doing for Comic-Con? Actually, I'm not. I backed out. You did? I backed out.
Starting point is 00:40:10 I was going to go and sign some stuff with Nick. We were going to take some photos. We're going to do it. Tell the Nick Cage wardrobe story. The wardrobe story about how he went with. So I get to, this is one of my first time. Actually, my first time meeting him. And we're in the wardrobe.
Starting point is 00:40:23 room or we come out of the wardrobe room. He's, we're like doing a whole thing. Now we're sitting down with the director to just talk. Nick is wearing like this crazy like yellow Louis Vuitton jacket, distressed leather jeans, like some sick watch. He's got like this crazy duffel bag with him. And it just looks like Nick Cage, you know what I mean? Like old school Hollywood movie star.
Starting point is 00:40:49 And I asked him, I said, hey, what did you get your sense of fashion from? And he goes, I learned it from Liberace. Liberace once told Elvis, you have to dress for your level of talent. I'll like you think I'm pretty good. Like, like, so he's a huge watch collector. He collects timepieces and he knows everything about him. The movements who invented what. And one day he was talking about this watch that he really wanted to get crazy watch,
Starting point is 00:41:19 beautiful watch. It was like a one-of-one or something like that. And he was debating if he should get it or not. And he's talking to me about it. Now, this is a watch I cannot afford. So I'm looking at him like, sure. So it's like 500 bucks. Like, I don't know what you're talking about.
Starting point is 00:41:32 You know what I'm saying? So anyway, it was probably, I'm not going to put his number out there, but I can tell you between. 150,000? Why would you put it out there? Yeah. So that's how much of what? He was like, I shouldn't get it.
Starting point is 00:41:45 I should get it. I shouldn't get it. We're shooting this very dramatic scene in the park bench. If you see Inspiring Noir, you would know, crushed it. They go cut. He goes, take a look at this. I was like, you bought it?
Starting point is 00:41:57 He goes, well, you said to get it. I got to say, get it? I was, you said, he was like, no, you said to get it. And we go back and forth. And he's like, I'm not taking it back. He's like, I didn't say to enjoy the watch. It's a beautiful watch. It's a beautiful watch.
Starting point is 00:42:08 Now, I asked him how I can get my hands on this watch. I'm not a collector. I only own one other watch. But I saw this and I was like, I just love this watch. I was like, how do I get it? It's like, you can't get it. You got to go through this dealer and that dealer. And I was like, that's so stupid.
Starting point is 00:42:22 double it and triple. I was like, okay, I don't need the watch. But I asked him, I said, do you have a guy? He's like, even his guy couldn't get it. So finally,
Starting point is 00:42:29 I golf with this guy, a golf buddy named B-Song, awesome guy, in the jewelry business. Doesn't need the money. He's like, I'll get the watch for you, but I'm not going to charge you up.
Starting point is 00:42:39 I'm not going to charge a premium on it. I just get you the watch at retail. And I was like, dude, thank you. I've been trying to find his watch for a couple years. I get the watch.
Starting point is 00:42:47 I see Nick at an event. Soon as he sees me, he goes, let me see it and he shows me his watch that's like some crazy shit I've ever seen before him months later months months months months later him and I are talking about
Starting point is 00:43:01 Spider-Noir renewal or not and he goes by the way I still think of or he's like I still love that piece you had on the other thing when I saw you I was like this dude loves time pieces so one thing I want to say about that is well you the fans are hoping for a new girl reunion like Zoe Max
