What's new, what's new with Menace?
What is up everybody? It is the What's New Podcast with Menace. I am Menace. I am joined by Bort, a.k.a. Brett.
He's an audio expert and syndication expert with the Woody Show Morning Show.
We are also joined by Tyler, who is the board operator for the Woody Show on all 987 in Los Angeles and Orange County.
We are also joined by Nick Soundwave, board's assistant, and Randy, who is a radio DJ himself, and he also works on the Woody Show.
We are coming to you live from Bear Mountain Resort.
It is a lovely day out here.
So sunny, so nice, snow everywhere.
DJ Scotty Fox, he is on the other side of this giant deck that they've built here.
Last time I was here, the whole Woody show, we had an event with Cypress Hill.
Oh, wow.
It was insane.
And the deck was a little bit small, and it was just packed with people.
Now, Bear Mountain Resort said, you know what?
Let's do a $5 million renovation and make this deck larger.
And look how packed it is.
I know.
You can check out our Instagram page at What's New Pod,
at What's New Pod to check out all the photos and the videos from today.
But the whole reason we're out here is thanks to a couple people.
Number one, Jack Daniels Tennessee Fire,
which we've been rolling with for a very long time.
And Bort, you're a lifer of Jack Daniels, of course. I'm a diehard Jack Daniels Tennessee Fire, which we've been rolling with for a very long time. And Bort, you're a life road Jack Daniels, of course.
I'm a diehard Jack Daniels fan.
I love Jack Fire.
Just put it in front of me.
I'll drink it.
I'll drink it all day just straight.
25%.
Yeah, I don't even mix it with anything.
Brett's blood is 25% Jack Daniels.
Damn right it is.
It should be.
What was that picture you sent me the other day of your Jack and Coke?
It was like 75% Jack, 25% Coke.
There's a bar I go to.
They're very friendly with the Jack because they know me.
So it was like 90% Jack.
Yeah, this is a couple events that we're going to be doing.
The next one's going to be actually in two weeks,
a big President's Day weekend up here at Big Bear Mountain Resort.
And, of course, the Jack Daniels fire is going to be flowing.
We have a Jack Daniels Tennessee Fire Hut going on.
Everybody's getting some drinks there.
DJ Scotty Fox in the mix.
It's literally within arm's reach of us.
This is the greatest thing ever for me.
Yeah.
And we have Tyler.
What is up, Tyler?
What's up, guys?
Yeah.
And of course, we're all fitted in DC Shoes gear.
We all got brand new jackets and wear.
You can check it out at our Instagram.
Once again, what's new pod.
And they fit us out, man.
Yeah.
Spoiled us.
Spoiled.
Spoiled is an understatement.
My jacket is DC.
My shirt is DC.
My hoodie is DC.
Believe it or not, I have a pair of DC boxers.
That's DC.
And my shoes are DC.
I'm all DC'd out.
Yeah.
If you want to check out all the brand new styles and you want to be fitted in the snow or just around the city,
DC has everything you need at DCShoes.com.
Did I tell you guys how surprised I was with the hoodie I got?
It just had a logo on the arm and the front, you know, when we got it.
This is possibly the most punk rock DC shoes hoodie I've ever seen.
On the back, it looks like a cross between the Distillers and Santa de la Muerte.
Yeah.
It's just in his face.
When I opened it, I was like, holy crap, dude.
It's super legit.
And check this out.
At What's New Pod on Instagram as well, we have a huge giveaway going on.
We're giving away hundreds of dollars worth of DC gear.
So if you're listening to this and you haven't
gone to our Instagram, go right now
and enter to win. I think out
of everybody on
this podcast, Nick Soundwave
is the one that hit the snow the most.
I went through a phase where I was
snowboarding quite frequently,
which is why... I can hear the Jack Daniels
kicking in right now.
One sip of drink, I'm so slurred.
Which is why I knew when we Jack Daniels kicking in right now. Yeah.
Which is why,
yeah.
So,
which is why I knew when we were coming up to bear mountain,
we got a text from somebody earlier and they were at snow summit.
Oh yeah. Dude,
you are in the wrong location.
That is not the same mountain.
Well,
you know,
some friends are just like that,
but you know,
Nick sound wave is super athletic.
He's super sporty.
You know,
did you skateboard or roller bike going,
going up roller hockey? So, I mean, that's basically roller or was snowboarding your thing well i mean i went
through phases i did i went through snowboarding for a couple years i paintballed i played hockey
i rolled hockey ice hockey at any point did you think about doing the x games when you were a kid
no but i watched it like i was never that talented i was always just mediocre enough to like not die
on the mountain.
Was Sean White your hero, or do you have any other snowboarders?
No, but I knew of them.
I always watched X Games and stuff, but I was never that into it.
Like I said, phases.
And I was never good enough to really aspire or look at them like that because I would get too confident and then really wipe out.
And then I'd be like, maybe I'll just go for a little bunny run or something after.
Yeah, I used to go up to tahoe a lot because my grandparents that's where they retired in
incline village yeah and i was always around the snow and i could ski no problem but snowboarding
always had an issue it's weird man to have your feet so immobile yeah skiing i think you'd be a
little more freeing i think would be a little easier because kind of still have free motion
of both legs and hands.
But yeah,
when you're locked in in a snowboard and getting on and off the ski lift is so
weird.
One foot in,
one foot out.
It's really intimidating when you're first doing it.
Cause your first couple of times you're going to be in so much pain from the
falling,
your knees will be jacked,
your ass will be so sore.
But then once you get good,
it's like,
Oh,
this is pretty,
pretty easy.
Um,
I think the next time we're up here,
we're going to be going in the snow.
Today, we're all going to
leave right after this event.
And we're going to head on over.
First off, we're going to stop at Shaquille's
restaurant. Shout out to
Shaquille O'Neal. We're going to be
hanging out at the Staples Center, and then
we're going to go to a Kings game.
We're recording this actually the
day after the big emotional
game.
Me who doesn't watch sports
constantly, I had to tune in. Did you tune in
last night for that tribute
to Kobe and
the speech that LeBron gave? Yeah, I actually
checked it out. I made a point because
I was out a little bit last night, but I said I need to be
home by 7 because I know that's when the coverage
starts. It was
really emotional. I'm sitting there
and I didn't cry or anything,
but I'm watching it and your
heart just kind of feels empty.
I think people
have realized over the past week
how much exactly Kobe
meant to the city and how much
the city actually loved him.
He's basically like their child.
Yeah.
So it was really trippy just listening to it
and then you look over at the two seats,
the one that has just his 24 jersey
and his daughter's number two jersey,
and that's when it's super surreal.
You look at him and you're like,
damn, he's really, he's gone.
Yeah, he's not here.
He's never coming back.
Yeah, and then just, again, just like you said, going around the city
and then seeing just painting after painting.
Every bus says RIP Kobe.
And I want to shout out LeBron.
I think LeBron did a great job on his speech.
Absolutely.
Off the dome.
I could not do anything like that.
I saw Randy reposting a lot of LeBron in his speech.
The Ducks took on the Lightning last night, and the goalie, John Gibson,
he had a customized Kobe Bryant helmet, and that looked really cool.
Super cool.
I noticed that every sporting division is doing something,
whether it's been soccer or basketball or hockey or pro wrestling even.
Everybody is paying respects and doing their own Kobe tribute.
Every basketball coach in the league wearing Kobe shoes.
Yeah.
It's crazy.
And I think this is one of the first celebrity deaths in a long time
where it impacted everybody around the world because basketball,
Kobe helped make basketball such an international sport.
I've seen murals popping up from China, the Philippines, Japan,
just all over the place of just kobe and
his daughter it's like this legit had a worldwide impact well especially because it wasn't like a
you know people dying from a sickness is sad that is horrible people dying of old age is still sad
but you know you think that they live a full life this was so sudden in such an accident that's
what's really hurting people so bad yeah
you know just no moment to even possibly pre-grieve or even think about it's just like that's it now
nick soundwave you work in sports radio how are they even handling that you know like how are
they able to talk about other events when kobe's such a big story yeah that's definitely an event
that it's a cancel your plans kind of thing, right?
Yeah.
Where there's very few things that it's like, okay, it happens,
and then you just scrap the entire show plan or whatever.
So the day of and even the days after and the week after,
it's very, very strong Kobe focused.
Yeah.
The day of, man, you might as well forget talking about anything besides Kobe and the Lakers.
Yeah.
And then, you know, as it goes on, the thing is now, if this happened in summer, dude, there's nothing going on in summer
besides baseball or something.
It would have been covered forever.
Now you're in a weird spot because you've got the Super Bowl coming up.
Yeah, the Super Bowl and other games.
He died his tragic death a week before the Super Bowl,
like literally seven days before.
So now you're in this weird limbo.
Like you wanted to vote as much time as you can to Kobe
because he deserves it.
But then you also don't want to just kick coverage of the biggest game of the year to the curb.
So it's a really weird limbo area.
The funeral plans will be interesting.
I've heard rumor that they might hold it at the L.A. Coliseum so as many people as they want can show up.
Yeah, because you would think they want to do it at Staples Center, but it's just too big.
They say it's only 20,000 people. It's too small. I'm saying the event of his funeral will be just too big,
not the Staples Center.
And that'll be the public memorial.
And it's crazy to think they can't use the Staples Center
when somebody like Michael Jackson dies.
And Michael Jackson is a massive icon worldwide person,
and they used to say Bull Center, but they're like,
no, Kobe, we need something bigger.
Yeah, it's just too big.
There's so much other things going on.
My buddy took a party bus to the Congo room last night,
the day of the Memorial game, like the first game back.
I'm like, dude, why are you still going to this?
He's like, we've already paid for the bus, we're going.
And he's like, it was a nightmare.
Freeways were closed, streets were closed.
And that was just the first game
back. Who knows when they have a
set time or date for something, the amount of people that will
miss work, skip school, and show
up or something like that. It's going to be
shut down LA. But people are going to understand, though.
Oh, yeah. 110%. Hey, Randy,
Tyler, you guys still have to be at work. I'm sorry.
Yeah.
I thought about it for a split second. I was like,
no, I can't. I'll definitely be watching. Kobe meant a lot to me when I was growing it for a split second. I was like, no, I can't.
I'll definitely be watching it.
Kobe meant a lot to me when I was growing up as a kid.
I reposted something on Instagram that I posted four years ago,
basically saying I saw him when I was growing up at my grandma's house.
I saw him with my dad.
I saw him play all his finals when I was a kid.
I listened to his last final in my high school gym.
I listened to his last game on my way home from school as I was rocking my T-shirt.
So he actually had a really big impact on my life because I'm such a big sports guy.
So for a legit split second, I did think, I wonder if I could get out of work.
And I thought, no, I can't.
As much as I would like to, I was like, I can't leave you guys hanging.
I don't think that they're going to do it that early in the morning
anyways. Yeah, I don't think I would
ask for time off because the Mamba
mentality is to work and never
stop working. That's what I plan on doing, of course.
No, but for me, it's like,
I mean, I would be lying if I
said I was a big basketball fan my whole life.
Basketball is always that one sport that I respected
it. You know, I rooted for the Lakers,
but I didn't know enough about it to talk about it.
The thing with Kobe was, though, it's kind of like
you always envision people of his stature
to be almost immortal in a sense.
I think Shaq said it best during the TNT,
you know, thing in the Staples Center,
where he was like, when you heard the news,
you refused to believe it.
You would think, oh, you know, Kobe probably jumped out of, you know, the chopper or whatever.
He's fine.
You know, stuff like that.
You never really think it's going to happen.
But stuff like this just reminds you of, you know, how real everything is.
And it's like the one positive to take out of a tragedy is, you know, everyday special,
live it to the fullest you know yeah and then like
that and then also you said that you're not really a basketball fan but he was an iconic figure that
transcended that absolutely to the point where you know every sport has that every sport has
two to three people that are iconic michael jordan kobe shack obviously you know you got like people
like babe ruth nolan ryan yeah um wrestling rick flair
yeah the rock hogan the rock stone cold you know all the wayne gretzky yeah people who don't um
they transcend their sport and become more than that and and they they become the mainstream they
become pop culture out of themselves so to lose, it's the same thing that happened with say like Michael Jackson or Chester
Bennington who transcended all different formats of music.
That's right.
Uh,
you heard Tyler gargling a little bit.
I don't know what that was.
We're enjoying the food.
Just FYI.
Um,
you heard us at the beginning of this podcast.
We're broadcasting live from big Bear Mountain Resort on the
wood deck and it's all powered by Jack Daniel's Fire.
Which I'm drinking right now.
Yes.
If you are out and about, you're going to have a party, you're going to hang with friends,
Jack Daniel's Fire.
It is so good.
I just drink it straight.
I don't mix it with anything.
Same.
It's delicious.
But there are some great things you can mix it with if you don't want to drink it straight. But it is delicious.
It's amazing. And the last
photo I sent of Randy was
soldier down and it was an empty bottle.
I was like, man, I gotta go get another one.
Yep. True that.
And of course, at every event that we
have, we're very thankful
for these people. Give it up for
Jackie and Mike.
Do you prefer going by
Michael? Mike.
Okay, I just want to make sure.
But hey, I just
saw you guys the other day and we got a
shout out. Mr. Iglesias
on Netflix. I saw you guys at a taping.
Well, you guys didn't see me. I was taking
photos of you guys. You guys were so into
it, right? Yes. He was stalking
you guys. They were taping season two. How exciting
is it going to be when that gets released?
It's so good. I'm so excited.
How cool is the whole
Fluffy team, right? They're so
nice. They work together very well.
I mean, endless laughs.
I saw you took a picture with who?
With Shooter McGavin.
Shooter McGavin? Wait, wait. Shooter
McGavin. Yes. Shooter. Yeah, wait. Shooter McGavin. The Shooter.
Yeah, from Happy Gilmore. He's on the
show. Dude, that rules. He was so
fangirling. How awesome is that?
It's a fun taping. And I heard
that you have a little story. So if people don't know,
if they've never been to a TV taping,
they always have a hype man,
right? And the hype man, do you have a funny
story about the hype man that works on Gabriel
Iglesias' show? I do. When I was 14 years old, I went to a taping of Hanging with Mr. Cooper.
Yes, I love that show.
And he was the hype guy. And this is our second time going.
The first time I went, I recognized him and I even asked him, excuse me, were you like the hype guy for Hanging with Mr. Cooper?
Like in the 90s. And he looked at me, he was was like yes, I was. Were you here? I'm like
yes. He says, you have a good memory.
It was awesome.
He's equally hilarious as he was
when I was 14 and I'm 37 now.
Sweet.
I just want to say thank you guys for always coming out to all
of our events, Woody Show, Woodyholics.
I see Leon's family
out there partying with you guys
and it's going to be a good day here at Bear Mountain Resort.
Thank you guys once again.
And big shout out to Mr. Iglesias on Netflix.
Make sure to check out season two once it drops.
Check it out.
We out here.
All right.
Now I want to bring in super Woodyholic Leon.
Sorry, I've already had too much to drink.
Is it Leon? Lead Woodyholic Leon? Shout out to've already had too much to drink. Is it Leon?
Lead Woody Pollock Leon?
Shout out to Jack Daniel's Fire, by the way.
Leon, what is up, bro?
Thanks for making it out with you and your whole family.
How's everybody doing?
We're good.
We're good.
I had a few drinks myself already.
Okay, good.
I can tell.
Those Jack Daniel drinks are pretty good.
Yes.
It's delicious.
Which one did you have, by the way?
I had the part of my wife's drink
which was the apple cider.
It's Jack Daniels
with...
It's that apple Jack.
And then the mule.
Oh, yeah.
Mule's got some fire in it.
That mule kicked me right now.
That's what's up.
So next time, I don't know if you're going to be out here.
We're going to actually do this event a couple more times,
and we're going to be out February 15th.
And when it comes to drinking, I think I have a challenger for you.
That would be Nick Soundwave.
Nick Soundwave, do you think we can do like a quick shot off or something?
Oh, yeah.
Sure, I'm definitely down.
I'm on.
Definitely will.
Okay.
Hold on.
Listen to the smack he's talking.
I mean, are we, what do we declare a winner?
Who can walk out of here?
I mean, because if it just comes to tossing back,
I could toss him back.
Yeah, I think it's just the quickness, the speed.
I'm sorry, Nick.
I could put it down.
I'm not sure.
I have the throw and it's an extra wide throat right here.
Do you also have enlarged tubsles?
Yes.
Do you suffer from Tyler syndrome?
No.
It's a very real thing.
The doctors are looking into it.
All of a sudden, randomly, he'll just go, oh, Kobe.
World Health Organization, who?
They're trying to get back to me.
Now, I don't want to make a prediction, but I've seen both these guys drink,
and my bet is on Nick Sandler.
And plus, now I have two weeks.
I'm assuming this won't be happening today.
But now I have at least two weeks to get some practice reps in.
Might take a couple bottles of Jack from the station home with me.
I'll get some practice reps in.
It's all muscle memory, right?
Yeah, yeah.
Limber up.
Good. Well, we'll make
sure we get that on tape for everybody at
What's New Pod. Alright.
I just ran into... What's your name? Where are you from?
I'm Max. I'm from Richmond, California. Richmond,
California, and you said that you're an OG
Woody Show listener. That's right. I've been listening to you guys
since you were in the Bay Area. Damn.
I was really excited to see you guys come down to LA. Yeah,
that's crazy. When did you move to Los Angeles?
2011. 2011? Yeah, so I've been listening to you guys since to LA. Yeah. That's crazy. When did you move to Los Angeles? 2011, 2011. So I've listened to you guys since day one. Wow. That's crazy. How did you,
how'd you find us? Uh, you guys had some, uh, billboards all around the city,
like right before you came. So yeah. And you're like, wait a minute. I know those people. Yeah,
that's right. Somebody hired them back together. And so you listen every morning. Yeah. What is,
uh, some of your favorite segments uh well i love your
uh word of the day thank you thank you awesome classic i'm educating people right yeah yeah
there's also uh what's it for good a week and you got some redneck news nice i love all that
stuff dude thank you so much for coming to hang out with us and i heard it's your birthday today
happy birthday i'm gonna make sure we hook you up with some tickets for coming out awesome and then
um so you snowboard.
Yeah.
Yeah.
How good of a snowboarder are you?
I'm pretty comfortable in the blues.
Once in a while, I'll go on the blacks, but not too often.
Wow.
See, I get up there, and there's this weird thing that I am connected to my board.
And I skateboarded my entire life.
And you would think it would be easy for me, but I trip out that I can't move my feet.
So then I usually just eat it the entire time.
I've actually never skateboarded at all.
Really?
Oh, really?
See, I think, I don't know,
some skateboarders are really good at snowboarding.
Like, I just suck at it.
I think it's definitely a difference,
like, if you're a rollerblader,
you know you can't bail out on your blades, right?
Because we're connected to you,
you're going to fall on your ass.
Skateboarder, you can bail out. Same thing with snowboarding, you can't bail out on your blades, right? Because we're connected to you. You're going to fall on your ass. Skateboard, you can bail out. Same thing with
snowboarding. You can't bail out.
Now, how do you think Randy will do
if we get him up on the slopes to snowboard?
I would like to see him eat it.
Yeah, he's
at the snack bar right now. That's not going to
help him at all. All right, man. Thank you.
It was so nice meeting you.
Appreciate it, man. Thank you.
Thank you. Oh, look who else is here.
It is the world famous VD.
What is up, VD?
Hey, what's up?
How you doing?
If you're a long listener of the What's New podcast, VD is infamous as she is a partner
in crime with Tyler.
And we love talking with you.
You're a little quick on the draw when it comes to talking.
That's why I like talking with you. What do you mean? Yeah. draw when it comes to talking. That's why I like talking with you.
What do you mean?
Especially when it comes to complaining about Tyler.
It's very easy.
That's not true.
I disagree with the things that you guys say.
Okay.
See?
Love it.
See?
That's why we love you so much.
That's not entirely true.
We've agreed before, but we just agreed about 10 minutes ago that Randy and Tyler both squabble with
each other like a lover's couple. Yeah.
They do, and I agreed with you. Exactly.
Are you jealous of that? No.
Does it make you upset
to see his unconditional love for
Randy? Yeah. Oh, no. Randy was around
way before I was, so who am I to
interfere? Oh, yeah. It's seniority,
right? Exactly. Yeah. Hierarchy, you know?
If you had to say who would be the dominant in the couple's relationship, who would it be?
Randy or Tyler?
Randy?
No!
I'm sorry!
No, no.
It's okay.
I could see that actually becoming true, so it's okay.
I see it daily.
Yeah.
Okay, with that, I'm going to wrap it up here in the snow.
It's such a great day here today, right? Weather to wrap it up here in the snow.
It's such a great day here today, right?
Weather, absolutely beautiful.
I love that it's warm out, but it's cold, it's windy.
Everything kind of melts together.
It makes it a very easy time.
It's warm enough to the point where a big jacket is probably excessive,
but it's nice enough to where you can still wear a sweater.
It's perfect.
There's someone skiing over there like half naked.
He's going hardcore.
Tyler jumped up what he saw.
All right.
Didn't happen.
BD, that didn't
happen.
All right, everybody.
We're going to be here
February 15th.
So we would love for
you to join us.
What's new?
