Starting point is 00:00:00 What's new, what's new with Menace? What's up everybody and welcome to another edition of the What's New Podcast with Menace. I am Menace. I am joined by Borch, aka Brett. He's an audio expert and syndication expert with the Woody Show Morning Show. We also have Nick Soundwave, aka Eric. He also works for Fox Sports. And we still got to talk about changing your Twitter handle which we never did and then we have Tyler he works on the woody show he's the board operator for alt 987 in Los Angeles and
Starting point is 00:00:36 Orange County then we are joined by Randy who is a radio DJ himself and he works on the woody show What is up, Randy? Hey, what's up, guys? Man, we had so much fun in Big Bear. That last podcast that we did was epic. Dude. Are we all good now? And if you don't know, Bort was a little upset with Randy.
Starting point is 00:00:58 Randy was a little upset with Bort. Just a little bit. We've been good. Everyone just keeps bringing it up again. I know. I just want to make sure. Are you guys fine? I'm like, dog, we've been good. Everyone just keeps bringing it up again. I know. I just want to make sure. Are you guys fine? I'm like, dog, we've been fine for like two days.
Starting point is 00:01:07 If you didn't listen to the podcast, go back and listen to Live from Big Bear podcast. So there was a couple things that actually happened after we taped the podcast that quelled everything. It put everything to rest. But the main thing was that I lost my keys snow skateboarding behind the hill. And it was my work keys, my house keys that came unclipped. And Randy went out with our buddy Steve the next morning and chiseled them out of the ice.
Starting point is 00:01:33 No way. And got them for me. It's almost like I'm actually a good guy. So I said, you know what, Randy? Thank you so much. I appreciate you. The thing is, I count on randy a lot so to to put fear in that and doubt is is really shaking so i said you know what i'll never bring
Starting point is 00:01:51 it up again until tyler brought it up again and then eric mentioned it but i will say randy needed a ride the other day yeah i didn't hesitate i said you know what man i got you so everything is squashed we're good it good. We're good until freaking Tyler Yeah, I don't know what you're talking about. Oh, this is just like when you and the brick got mad But you remember that time Brett was really pissed You know ready, I just want to tell you man congrats on you here at I heart Oh, but this is almost like when you and the brick on that one fight. Yeah Hey, I know you're really down right now because the Ducks just lost again,
Starting point is 00:02:26 but hey, do you remember that time that you and Brett got in that horrible fight? I know it's the year 2030, but remember? Randy was a great man. Yeah. He lived a good life. Anyways, if you want to come meet up with me this Saturday, February 22nd, 2020, I'm going to be in Long Beach broadcasting live from 2 to 5 p.m. at Pan American Park.
Starting point is 00:02:47 Get all the details. Go to thewoodyshow.com and click on events. But I'm going to have some special Woody Show stickers. The first 100 people get free food. Nice. Tyler, feel free to come on down. I'm good. Thank you for the invite.
Starting point is 00:02:59 That's like 30 people's work. Then I'll also have a bunch of giveaways as well. Again, if you want to come hang out with me this Saturday, February 22nd from 2 to 5 p.m. in Long Beach, Pan American Park. Can we go back to hanging out at the cabin real quick? Yeah, which part do you want to cover?
Starting point is 00:03:16 I want to cover the part where Tyler was sawing logs all night. Oh my God. What are you talking about? You're vibrating the entire cabin, dude. I don't know what you're talking about. What are you talking about? You're vibrating the entire cabin, dude. I thought there was an avalanche. I'm a very deep sleeper. I snore.
Starting point is 00:03:30 All right. All right. Dude. You snore, dude. Dude. They came up on the earthquake indicator. The Richter scale. You know the word here?
Starting point is 00:03:41 Richter scale, everybody. I thought there was an avalanche going on. Oh, my God. So, yeah. This was bad. So, I was the avalanche going on. So, yeah. This was bad. So, I was the last one to get there. So, I got last claim at the room, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:50 And Meta said, hey. Why were you the last one to get there? I was going to be ready. You're such a cock. Yeah, you're such a cock. Yeah. So, Meta said, okay, good news and bad news, bud. All right.
Starting point is 00:04:02 Good news. We have a bunch of great couches you could sleep on if you really want to. Super comfortable. Bad news. We got one more bed. It's in Tyler's room. I said, well,
Starting point is 00:04:11 I'm taking the couch, man. So I tried to sleep in this little alcove with a chair, you know, and just put two chairs together because I don't really like being out in the open.
Starting point is 00:04:20 Bad idea. Very uncomfortable. So I go sleep on the couch and I started hearing and I thought, Bad idea. Very uncomfortable. So I go sleep on the couch. And I started hearing... And I thought... I was like, is there an animal in the house? What the hell's going on, man?
Starting point is 00:04:33 And then I realized what wall I was next to. It was Tyler! Starring through the wall! Yeah. Oh, my God. Shaking the whole house. Not my fault that the walls were paper thin. It was not my fault.
Starting point is 00:04:42 I'm going to be... Let's park this real fast. Are you really surprised though? Well, so then Steve, our buddy Steve woke up and he came out and I said, dude, is that a bear? No, that's Tyler's. No way. Are you a light sleeper?
Starting point is 00:04:59 Yeah. No, it was that loud. It was super loud. Dude, I had the room next to him. Oh my God. It was so loud. Dude, I had the room next to him. Oh, my God. It was so loud. This is what I was telling you, man. I think you have sleep apnea.
Starting point is 00:05:10 You got to get that machine. Oh, no. So I have some intel that Tyler doesn't even know that I know he has sleep apnea and he's supposed to be sleeping with the breathing machine and he doesn't do it. Do you want to die at like 38, bro? Tyler's looking at me. He goes, how do you know that? I know man dude i'm all about that's that's false information honestly don't be embarrassed you gotta you should that stigma slap on that mask bro and
Starting point is 00:05:34 just all right i'm trying to live do you or do you not have a mask i did oh okay i did then he threw it away because you don't use it no they told me i didn't need anymore because they took my obviously you do they took my tonsils out. Obviously you do. They took my tonsils out. They said you're fine. So I was like, okay. What? I thought someone had...
Starting point is 00:05:49 So this is no longer a sleep apnea thing. It's more of a just there's too much weight on his thorax. I'm telling you, man. It happens to overweight guys. I need to finish my sleep study to see if I need it. I probably do. Yeah. There's no shame in it.
Starting point is 00:05:59 The stigma... You need to crush that stigma, bro. Or maybe just something on your nose that helps the breathing. Yeah. Or like a mouth guard or something. I think Greg has even spoke about it. He sleeps and he wakes up sweating. That's bad.
Starting point is 00:06:09 Dude, or... That's really bad. Or you know what we could do next time? I could just go in there, take a pillow, smother you, and then hopefully you survive. Yeah. Yeah, because then I could sleep. But if you need a machine, bro, you got to use that thing, too. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:21 That's going to lead to heart disease and a bunch of bad things. And I don't know, just looking at you, your aren't looking good i'm i'm good i swear i'm good dude no joke i tried to sleep every hour i got woken up well i we're doing it again march 14th i don't know if we have a cabin or not this time can he sleep outside like in a tent but do we have a ride at big bear mountain march 14th from 1 to 3 p.m. at Big Bear Mountain Resort. I need to find out if we're going to have a cabin this time or not. If we do, everyone stay awake and wait for Tyler to fall asleep
Starting point is 00:06:55 so we can get the audio. Oh, then the next morning, I'm like, I pop in, I'm like, yo, dude, I'm going to go look for Brett's keys. Do you want Tyler? He's like, okay, cool. Just laying in bed. I'm like, all right dude no rush don't don't worry about it dude tyler was the most comfortable we brought this up on the
Starting point is 00:07:08 podcast he looks so comfortable like early morning yeah first time i'm going upstairs he's already spread out on the couch yeah on tv he was the most comfortable watching xfl you guys remember that old uh marijuana commercial and it had the person all like disinflated. Are you embarrassed or something? Why are you standing away from the microphone? I live in a house that has seven other people in it, so if I get a chance to get away, I like to just relax. Those poor people must be so sleep deprived.
Starting point is 00:07:38 Are they deaf? They are not deaf. It's called selective hearing. Don't you share a room with one of your brothers? Yeah, I do. Oh, man. That poor guy. You know what?
Starting point is 00:07:48 He has his own problems. He grinds his teeth while he sleeps. Oh, that's stress. Yeah, because he hears the snoring. He's like, I don't want to punch him so bad. So besides Tyler sleep depriving me and keeping me awake all night, are you guys all fully recovered? Because we were hitting the snow skateboard
Starting point is 00:08:05 really hard we were hitting the sled really hard i was sore the next day but you guys went harder than i did i was pretty exhausted tired i went to bed early and then i saw all these extra videos of you guys out on the snow skate oh my god but i got them way later that i could have posted them on our instagram at what's new pod. Randy definitely had the best fall. If you have not seen this video, go to at what's new pod. You do the straight splits. See, I messed up because I thought- Dude, your cooch is blown out, man.
Starting point is 00:08:36 Dude, I messed up because I thought I was going to stop like I was running, and my feet just gave up from under me. Because the first day we were there, we had like a little layer of snow. The next day, it was just ice, dude. Yeah. Of course, that was the day I decided to do it. How hard were we all laughing for hours? I've never heard you laugh that hard ever.
Starting point is 00:08:51 I'll still randomly go back and watch the video a couple times. It's just so... Because you see him, it's like he kind of bails. He doesn't really get going too far or too fast. But he bails and you just see left leg go left and right leg go right. And you're like, this was doomed from the very beginning. And the remixes already are hilarious. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:08 Someone came up to us yesterday in the office and said, you should remix that. We're like, done. We already have it from our buddy. People I don't even know are like, how's your taint? I'm like, what? Who are you? Speaking of videos, I became aware of a video.
Starting point is 00:09:23 Tyler, I know this is your day on the podcast today. This is the Roast Tyler podcast. About time. About goddamn time. Yeah. This video, apparently there is some Tyler rage. Oh, God. I just remembered what this is.
Starting point is 00:09:39 I just remembered what this is. Tyler rage clips. So obviously we work in a building where there's a lot of cameras. Yes. And there's a camera in the studio that none of the listeners ever get to see because it is a security camera that is in the main studio where Tyler works of Tyler raging out out of nowhere. You know,
Starting point is 00:10:04 the camera's there, right? Yeah, I know. I tell him every day. So Tyler, please explain yourself. At what's new pod on Instagram? You know what? There was a slip up on the show that may or may not have been my fault. So I was pretty pissed.
Starting point is 00:10:24 Yeah. That's the easiest way to say it like look when i when i get mad at you guys oh for the most part i am really just joking around i don't think i've ever gotten mad at anyone in this room legitimately so when i get mad at you guys i'm completely joking around yeah that. That I was legitimately pissed off. I was so bad. You think? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:47 You know what? I was thinking there's something. I want to smash something, but I'm not sure what. And I was looking around. I was looking around and I saw the wrapping paper. I was like, this will work. Well, initially when I saw it, I'm like, okay. If anybody remembers the beginning of the internet and viral videos, I'm like, is this Star Wars Kid Part 2?
Starting point is 00:11:07 Oh my god. Walking around with it like a lightsaber, what am I going to do with this? And then I go, wait a minute, what's this rage? It became scary for a second. You know what? When I see a video like that though, I think of the potential, as in what can we catch Tyler doing on camera potential?
Starting point is 00:11:24 So this should be this should be interesting you're on out yeah which actually uh leads us to the second clip that mena saw which was actually you can't really see what happened yeah i don't understand on the second from from so from the second clip uh it was just a couple of us in the studio right and tyler tried to get he had he had a abort moment where he tried to get rid of something with liquid in it yeah and chucked it at a trash can hoping it would land in there and it splattered on the wall oh okay i thought you'll be able to see it but you can't tyler kind of looking around like hmm is there anything to clean this up with no are you sure? Let me keep looking. No. Are you sure? Let me keep looking.
Starting point is 00:12:05 And of course, what happens is I go to the restroom to grab some paper towels, right? And I'm thinking in my head, I'm going to leave the studio. And the second I leave, someone's going to come in here and be, what the hell happened? Yeah. Of course, on my way back with paper towels from the bathroom, Randy, what the hell happened? I was like, dude, what the hell? What is this? And of course, I love how Randy goes and tries to get the footage right away.
Starting point is 00:12:33 Well, he actually darked about to be first, which I appreciate that. All I did was I had a cup that I thought was empty. I tossed it against the wall. Keep in mind, it had a lid on it. i tossed it against the wall now keep in mind it had a lid on it yeah i tossed it against the wall and apparently and the lid stayed on once it hit the trash can apparently the liquid came out of like the little small like um hole that's in the lid and it hit against the wall i was like okay well and i wasn't just like an analogy of your life essentially you think you got it and then and i wasn't gonna leave it i was gonna go clean it up
Starting point is 00:13:03 but of course someone sees it before I come back to clean it. And it's like, well, that's my life right there. Well, thank you for the video content. Oh, you're welcome. I feel like now we have to do stuff in order to make sure that he has reactions on camera. Yes. So now the creativity juices can start flowing. And now we can brainstorm ways to mess with Tyler.
Starting point is 00:13:20 I have a couple ideas. I have to get them approved first by engineering and IT before. Yeah, well, we have Clint from IT here. Is there any way we can take over his studio and make it sound like he's messing up? Do whatever you guys want. Yes! You better be nice to us, Tyler.
Starting point is 00:13:34 We just flip a switch and it sounds like the whole station's messed up. Yeah, I have the IP address. Don't worry. Yeah, but it's not even doing anything. Yeah, if you want to see that video, at What's New Pod on Instagram. It's very, very interesting. We have a friend joining us. His name is Rome.
Starting point is 00:13:50 What's up? What's up? You might know Rome from Sublime with Rome, but he has so many other things going on constantly. I've known Rome, I don't even know how long now. Over 10 years. You know what's tight about that? We can say over a decade. Yeah, over a decade.
Starting point is 00:14:05 Last time I saw you, I think physically in person. I mean, we talk a lot on Twitter and text, but I saw you at the Aloha Stadium. Cardi B. Yep, Cardi B and Snoop Dogg. Snoop Dogg was there too. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Damn, that was a crazy show. That was a great show.
Starting point is 00:14:21 It's like the whole arena just lit up. Yeah. It was crazy. We got lost on the whole arena just lit up yeah it was crazy we got lost on the way there yeah yeah and lost backstage too because
Starting point is 00:14:31 Rome has his own Randy so like I remember I hate when there's conversations because they always go backstage but I remember when you guys got off stage I was like
Starting point is 00:14:40 oh I'm gonna go hang out with you guys backstage so I just followed you and so you had you had your version of Randy a guy that works for you, to take you backstage. But suddenly we're going outside the arena. And we're like in the public area. We call it against Salmon River.
Starting point is 00:14:56 Yeah. We're going like upstream. You know what I mean? We're like, oh, my God. Suddenly we're outside. Is that? Was that? Dude, I think that was.
Starting point is 00:15:04 What? Yeah. Oh, my God. that was. What? Yeah. Oh, my God. It was the best, though. Dude, I'm out in the middle of the battlefield right now, man. What do you want to do to me right now? And everyone's like,
Starting point is 00:15:14 Rome, Rome, Rome. And you're like, damn, I thought we were going backstage and suddenly we're just outside. Yeah, our dude's just like, just red. Like, oh. Yeah, man.
Starting point is 00:15:23 And then I remember then we lost him that he went missing for a while dude i don't accept it yeah the whole reason that you're here though because you have a new project and i want to hear all about it and you're taking it on tour too so what's it all about um okay so it it's kind of crazy man how the whole thing happened but it happened as organically as humanly possible uh dirty heads had a show in atlanta and uh sublime with rome had a festival the night before so i just stayed and hung out with the guys and after the show i was sitting with duddy on the bus and we were kind of faded and we're like, dude, wouldn't it be sick if we just like both got a bus and just hit the road and like played just like some of our solo acoustic stuff and,
Starting point is 00:16:11 and maybe did like lay me down together and then, you know, called it a night. Right. So like a little bar tour or something. That's like kind of what we were thinking. It'd be cool. And I was like, okay, cool. That, that sounds tight. And then honestly, like at lunch the next day, I okay cool that that sounds tight and then honestly like at lunch the next day i just told my manager the idea and he was like dude this is a great idea um so then he was like look you know you guys should get in the studio to see what happens you know and then we're like dude that's perfect we should write a song that we can perform live yeah for this tour and so we did our uh like this this version of uh and it's stone me van morrison cover and um
Starting point is 00:16:47 we kind of just circulated it through like the homies and our team and dude they went nuts our agent loved it and they were just like yo we want to book this tour and the promoters went crazy so they've just like we thought it was gonna be a bar tour now it's like you know in performing arts theaters it's like yeah a thousand caps 12 performing arts theaters, it's like a thousand caps, twelve hundred caps. And then they were like, yo, you guys should do an album. And like, we're going to get merch for it. And we're like, OK, which is super awesome. Because, I mean, like you remember, like from, you know, back in like the Bay Days, like, you know, all I ever wanted was just someone to just care about the music, the art.
Starting point is 00:17:22 Yeah. So now it's like to the point where we're able to to brainstorm these ideas and then the team can turn them into like these things but that's not where this came from it was supposed to be really just like for fun and super organic it's awesome yeah you're so you're kicking off the tour and then you're stopping and the last time actually saw the dirty heads was in albuquerque and that's where you get that's the start that's where you're gonna start the 26th yeah the woody show is actually we was in Albuquerque. And that's where you get. That's a start. That's where we're going to start. The 26th. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:46 The Woody Show is actually, we broadcast in Albuquerque. So that's awesome. Oh, dude, let me know. We'll slide through. 104.1 The Edge. Yep. And then after that, we have Kansas City, Missouri, which we also broadcast in. So that's dope too.
Starting point is 00:17:58 Yeah. So we're going to make sure that we give you a lot of love on this tour. I appreciate it. All the information is going to be at thewoodyshow.com if you want to know where you can check it out then you're going to finish up in nashville which i've seen you tweet about nashville about maybe buying a home there bro and i was like dude buy one there so i can crash there when i visit dude dude i fell in love when i went to nashville we just put an in on the house. Oh, you did? Oh, wow. Last night.
Starting point is 00:18:29 So today we'll find out if, you know. Hopefully that comes through. But yeah, no, we're going to be heading out there. You know, I want a little more space for the kids and stuff. Yeah, it has a guest room, right? You got a good school system. For me? Dude, yes. Yeah, okay.
Starting point is 00:18:39 Because like the house is out like, you know, it's so much cheaper out there. I saw you tweet about that a year ago. Dude, it's so sick. It's so dope and i've been going out there and working a lot and like yeah you know my my father-in-law he he lives out there as well so it's like a lot of my friends moved out there and that's a marshville what the yeah like i've been heading out there and i'm loving it man yeah the food is crazy dude i came back and i tried to sell everybody. I go, yo, we can do this from anywhere. Well, why are we here? I could actually probably afford an apartment in Nashville.
Starting point is 00:19:13 Yeah. Come on, guys. At least a box or something. But, you know, I think our company has a brand new building there. Yeah, we're building another digital HQ there in Nashville. Yeah. Dude, that's amazing. Some of our people here went out there.
Starting point is 00:19:27 Warehouse. Well, they're calling it Crane City a little bit. I heard. Last I counted was 16 in the sky. Really? I was there two weeks ago. Wow. 16.
Starting point is 00:19:34 Damn. They're building it, man. My father-in-law has like a balcony that overlooks like pretty much all the gulch in downtown. And one of my homies does construction out there. And he told me that there's a three-year waiting list for a crane. wow trip on that okay wait 16 three-year wait dude they're gonna need to make like five times the amount of bars that they have now so anybody listening if you do crane or construction head to nashville i want to go back because i i talked to a lot of people about you know coming up and and i think a lot of it has to do with taking risks.
Starting point is 00:20:07 And I want you to share your story of like taking risks of moving from the San Francisco Bay area down to Southern California and like what you had when that happened. And because I've heard stories, cause I know your brother very well. People might not know this. His brother actually used to be one of my interns. He was way better than Randy is. And obviously you didn't even need to say that but uh yeah and then just you know can you just share that story just a little bit like okay once a day like i'm just gonna leave the bay area
Starting point is 00:20:36 and i'm just gonna pursue what i want to do like how that happened well so for me it was like i always just wanted to be in a band right and? And I had a really hard time finding people who were like as committed as I was, even from just a young age. Like when I would just be bullshitting with people, you know, we'd be in a band and they'd be like, yeah, man. When I get to college, you know, I'd be like, college? I thought we were in this band. It's like, dude, we're 15.
Starting point is 00:21:03 College is four years away. I'd be like, nah, dog. I thought we were dating, dog. He's like, dude, we're 15. College is four years away. I'd be like, nah, dog. I thought we were dating, dog. I'm like, what's up? Is this not for real? So that was my whole fucking teenage years. So for me, I knew I had to get the hell out of the Bay Area. And I had to go to wherever my career could get popping at,
Starting point is 00:21:22 which was Los angeles yeah la so my thing was was i was going to uh study audio engineering and then get a job at a studio and then maybe try and make some connections and kind of network from there that was like my goal um because i've always loved to record music so i saved up some money and then i blew it all. So then I pushed it back another year, saved up some more money, and I moved down to L.A. And then, dude, it's hard out there. L.A. is tough. It's not as easy as it sounds to just kind of go out there and I'm going to get my shit popping. No way, man.
Starting point is 00:22:02 Nobody would hire me. And I was trying to apply it like fucking subway bro yeah you know what i'm saying yeah outfitters you know like i ain't trying to do nothing crazy and even like five ten years ago anything it was like oh wait how do you look yeah now you show up and everyone has tattoos on their faces man yeah dude it's crazy in studios it was always hey who do you know exactly do you have a referral does anyone know you and you're like i'm just trying man look what i could do it's like it's hard to know it's so hard without it you need that person to kind of vouch for you yeah and there were a couple people that kind of slowly vouched for me along the way my main thing was just was always just
Starting point is 00:22:42 be a swiss army knife in the studio um because that's where i really wanted to be so i made sure that i knew what i was doing in there you know like yeah i'd overhear someone say like oh i don't know how to work this thing you know i don't know yeah you like your utility guy you know what i mean like i got you hey just hold f1 and do that you know what i mean um and and and i think that's why people with me because like the answer was never no it was always like, let me see. What's up? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:06 Hey, I'll go grab the tacos. Okay? Uh-huh. Don't worry about it. I'll be back. See you ready? You know what I mean? That's what we appreciate.
Starting point is 00:23:12 Oh, my God. You guys, these guys. But now he acts like he knows. No, no, no. Hold on. These guys swear that they're like, hey, we need to go pick up some food. I'm like, oh, no, man. I'm busy.
Starting point is 00:23:21 I can't do it. I can't make it. They're all shuffling papers. I'm always like, okay, let's go do it. All right, fine. I'll go get it. But we have preached to you that same method of you got to learn everything you can. You got to help everybody you can because you never know.
Starting point is 00:23:34 You know what's a trip, too, though, is that when you, especially in L.A., and I guess I'd say it works for your industry, too, just like it does here. These guys, because they're at the top of their game, eventually their their work to you just becomes standard. And then you'll see other people do their stuff. And it's like, oh man, like this is nowhere near the level that I'm used to. Absolutely. It's a trip. It's weird. There's levels to this. So people start vouching for you. Like, like what was the, the one voucher was like, holy crap. The catalyst was, was, uh, this, this engineer and producer in Orange County. His name is Louis Richards.
Starting point is 00:24:08 And he was friends with the bass player of Sublime. Okay. And he put me on and let me kind of run his studio. You know, we made a trade. Like, he was like, if you help me run my studio he needed clients this is like right during a really bad time with mp3 yeah all that you know what i mean yeah cds are going out the window no one's caring about music like they're trying with the inbox at home to do their band so yeah and you're like this is not working for me yeah he needed help on that and i was like look
Starting point is 00:24:41 man i came out here to be in a studio so I'll quit everything I'm doing to just help you. So he let me sleep in the vocal booth for like two years, and in return, I was mopping and cleaning and setting the attack on the pressers. But Eric would swing by, Eric Wilson, the bass player of Sublime, and I'd just get to smoke weed with him and just hang out you know he's like everybody would always bug him I knew that he's the kind of guy too where you know he's not like the
Starting point is 00:25:12 guy where you'd be like bro huge fan like you could just tell you know he's not like yeah you get that vibe they just want to be treated like a normal person like a normal dude you know what I mean like so so be it you know what I mean I was just that that dude and then he throws like the wickedest house parties, man. I swear to God.
Starting point is 00:25:28 And he invited me over one for Halloween. And I go over to his house, me, my girl at the time, and then Louis, the producer. And dude, we're just watching him and his punk band jam and shit. And then he gets off stage. He's like, dude, you want just, like, watching him and his, like, punk band, like, jam and shit. And then he gets off stage and is like, dude, you want to play a Sublime song? And I was like, yeah. Which one? I'm like, I know them all, man.
Starting point is 00:25:55 Like, pick one, you know. And so I think someone said, like, wrong way. And that was, like, the first jam that we did. Wow. And then after that, you know, it was just kind of tight because like the word kind of got around in the community and like long beach and orange county and then you know more more people started to kind of like vouch for me all of a sudden this guitar company was like hey do you want some guitars it was like yeah all right you know yeah meanwhile like the idea started
Starting point is 00:26:21 popping off you know eric eric started talking to to the guy who owned the studio, which is our manager, Cheese. So I talked with him. He's like, yo, like this could be something, you know. And, you know, they were kind of putting together the idea of like, which would be Sublime with Rome. And, you know, I'm just like, OK, whatever you guys want to do, man, you know, do it. At this point, I'm like living out of my van, like homeless, just like, you know whatever you guys want to do, man. Let's do it. At this point, I'm living out of my van, homeless, just waiting for something to pop off. And then while they're kind of figuring out how they're going to do it,
Starting point is 00:26:54 I do a song with the Dirty Heads, and that song goes number one on radio. Yeah, I remember when that hit. That was like out of just nowhere. Because I'm like, yo, this would be crazy if like there is ever a sublime show. This won't be one show. Yeah. You know, I was like, this is like, I never thought my life would be this.
Starting point is 00:27:13 So I'm like super down. They're like my favorite band anyway. And then all of a sudden this song just takes off with this whole other band. And it was like, you know, then, then I got money. Then like a publishing company. You're like, I can actually live not in my van. Yeah. Which was super crazy, you know, which was rad.
Starting point is 00:27:30 And then the Sublime thing took off and then it was just like, whoa. But, you know, my thing still to this day, man, is just like, I just want to make good ass shit with my friends. And for that stuff, like I'll go to the n's degree man like i'm always just i'm just hella passionate about what i do whatever i commit to you know i'm just like super all the way about it yeah um and it never feels like work you know yeah because you're having fun exactly and that's what you're saying earlier even the bullshit part yeah yeah even getting taco parts i'm like i'm still going back to studio bitch you know like it's all good. I'm still going to go have fun with friends. I'm still going to do stuff.
Starting point is 00:28:07 And then after all that, I've seen you on social media with just other producers and other artists in the studio producing songs. Dude, I stay close to the R as much as possible. This industry is crazy. You have a little window when you're hella hot, and then everybody wants to fuck with you, and then they're like, okay, anyway, what's new? You know what I mean? But then you have like a little window when you're like hella hot and then everybody wants to fuck with you. And then, you know, they're like, OK, anyway, what's new? You know what I mean? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:27 But then you still got a career. You know what I mean? So a lot of artists, I think, get like caught up in this space where they get really like salty and kind of like fuck the industry. Right. Yeah. But my thing was, is like, I've always loved the industry because it took me from living on a couch to, you know, now like having a house. So I'm like, OK, well let's embrace the industry. I know.
Starting point is 00:28:47 You know, like what are the parts that I super love about it? I love new music. Yeah. I love making strangers fall in love with new music. You know, I love finding guys who are like me, who love to make music, you know, producers I value on the highest on the board because they they just produce they produce for themselves they produce for the neighborhood they produce for billy eilish or they produce for italica like you know they just their abundance of creation and i i just
Starting point is 00:29:17 value like creatives like that so my thing was like to put myself in a position where i'd be surrounded by the most creatives and not just any creatives but up-and-coming creatives I needed to have a label in a publishing company so that's what I naturally did was that and then you know it's it's awesome it's like now I'm like constantly surrounded by not just my art and ideas but other people's art and ideas and and you know I'd be lying if I said like it's not inspiring because it is even when I do my when you decide to go all-in on your passion in the art and then what you want to do do you feel like you had some pushback from family from friends and then though you had to make some tough decisions like okay I kind of separate myself from some people yeah I know. Well, dude. Yeah, for real. Dude, my mom changed the locks on the door.
Starting point is 00:30:08 Everyone thinks you're nuts, man. Yeah. You know, I was, like, blessed to, you know, be around music at an early age. Like, my dad had instruments in the house. So I think it kind of just gave me some more, like, an upper hand, you know, because I had the instruments in the house. So like when I would tell people like, yo, this is what I want to do, they'd be like, you know, you're pretty good, but go to college. You know what I mean? Like that was always like the sentiment.
Starting point is 00:30:36 It wasn't ever like, oh, dude, I wouldn't do that if I were you. But, you know, I saw on Instagram, I don't know if it's true. I don't believe what you read on Instagram. But it was something like there's a one in 10 million odds that you will become a successful musician or like actor. It sounds about right, though. You know what I mean? But to me as a child, that statistic bared no weight. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:31:04 I was like, I don't know what the f*** that is. I just want to do this. And where I land, I land. But also, what is success? Is success getting to the heights of being able to have your own level, which is amazing. I think that's what I would... Some of my earliest memories, not to cut you off, bro. Some of my earliest memories, when I would be visiting down to San Diego to see my family,
Starting point is 00:31:29 we would, you know, we always drove and we drive under like the bridges and stuff or underneath like overpasses and tunnels. And you're not supposed to like hold your breath and make a wish. Yeah. Right. Underneath like in a tunnel. Yeah. And I would do that.
Starting point is 00:31:42 And I remember being like maybe 12 and then like saying multiple times like my wish would be i hope that i'm a professional musician wow and i remember because i heard somewhere that like you need to be a professional musician not just a musician you're professional because it was just being able to live yeah you know what i mean like not not sweat. I started thinking it was a bigger language. Yeah, when you first started touring, what was the first place that you went outside of the country?
Starting point is 00:32:12 And you're like, oh my God, I can't believe it. Dude, South America. I went to Brazil and played in front of 80,000 people. What? I was nuts. Yeah. It's nuts. I was so scared. What am I doing right now?
Starting point is 00:32:22 But it was crazy because, so we, I haven't thought about this in a while. We went to the show. We got there at like, let's just say like Friday night at like midnight. And then we land and then we get into our van and then we drive to our hotel, right? Just fresh from LA. And it's just like this citadel, it's like two f***ing arm guards and then just like this thick metal door that just slowly opens and we're looking at each other like
Starting point is 00:32:53 where the f*** are we going yeah and we pull in there and it's the four seasons man i mean it's like beautiful yeah and we're staying in this these beautiful f***ing rooms and um you know we got some energy we just we're fresh off the flight you know it's like midnight we're like what's up i know there's some s*** we're in f***ing rio yeah what's good you know what i mean everybody's like nope you guys are staying indoors no you guys are staying indoors because the favelas are like right outside yeah yep and this is my first time ever being out of the country, other than in Mexico because I have family down there, but like, you know, down to South America.
Starting point is 00:33:32 And we ended up convincing our security guard to like sneak us out and take us to the club. Oh, no. Oh, my God. So we get to the club and, you know, he's like, yo, I got my boys, you know, trying to get in, blah, blah, blah, blah. And we get in and the local security guard there goes to my security guard and goes, hey, doc, just while you're here, hold this.
Starting point is 00:33:54 And he just gives him a gun. And my security guard's like, nope, here you go. Come on, we're getting the fuck out of here. We're like, no, come on. He's like, nope, come on, back in the van. That's how it was. Because remember when the Olympics were there, we started hearing stories about rowing teams from Europe
Starting point is 00:34:08 getting mugged on the streets by people. Dude, I told you, one of my friends just moved right back down there again last week. It's funny you mentioned Mexico, because I think it was December of 2018. I was in Cancun, and I sent a picture of it to Menace. I was walking to some random street, and I look up, and on this post, there's a, there's
Starting point is 00:34:27 a flyer for Sublime with Rome. I'm like, huh, that's random. Just randomly in Cancun. So I sent it over to him. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. That show's f***ing crazy. Oh yeah. We've had some, some f***ing badass shows down there just recently.
Starting point is 00:34:40 Like we didn't go down there for like eight years, probably because of, you know, whatever turmoil was going on. But I think, I don't know what happened, but all of a sudden we just started getting some down there just recently. We didn't go down there for like eight years probably because of whatever turmoil was going on. But I think, I don't know what happened but all of a sudden we just started getting some really cool offers
Starting point is 00:34:50 down there and our management just, they greenlit a bunch of shows and we've just been going down there and f***ing partying. It's been rad, man.
Starting point is 00:34:57 The shows that I really, I want to hit up one day are the ones that you do, the pool shows in Vegas. Those are dope, dude. Wegas those are dope dude we do those so much fun those are so those ones are always packed with so much friends and family yeah so many like people fly out from canada like our homies yeah new york like it's crazy um but you know and and the backstage is literally just like a walkway you just hang out back it's just a mad
Starting point is 00:35:22 house but man it's such a good vibe, man. We've been doing those for like 10 years, man. So when I see music festival lineups come out, so like you were out here in Long Beach, California last weekend, maybe the weekend before. Oh, that's right, yeah. So you see that lineup, you're like, damn, so Black Moth Rome, Dirty Heads, Pepper,
Starting point is 00:35:39 Atmosphere, Modest Fiaoli, like marquee guys all in one night. So my first thought is, you know, okay, great performance, great acts, great artists. My first thought is always, though, like, damn, backstage must be wild. Is there like that one band? Because obviously you have personal relationships with almost all these guys. But you see like, damn, Dirty Heads.
Starting point is 00:35:57 They're there the same night as us. Or like Atmosphere is there with us. It's like, okay, pack the Advil. Pack the Pedialyte for the next morning. You know what's funny is in this specific scene, everyone's just pretty chill. You know what I mean? Everyone's pretty
Starting point is 00:36:14 chill. Wilson is probably the wildest dude, just like microdosing shrooms and drinking out of the bottle moonshine. You know what I mean? But, you know, honestly, we're probably part of the bottle moonshine, you know what I mean? But, you know, honestly, we probably parted the hardest. I'm sweet. I mean, everyone's really cool.
Starting point is 00:36:30 No one's really f***ed it up. I feel like that was me probably like seven years ago. I was like breaking tables, falling over drunk. But everyone's pretty cool now. Within the past couple years, I've hung out backstage with both of the bands, not you guys together. It might be a different experience. But, yeah, it's very laid back
Starting point is 00:36:45 everyone's drinking smoking having a good time but no one's like again breaking tables or anything like that I mean dude when we were kids
Starting point is 00:36:54 when we first started yeah I threw a champagne bottle through a wall and then it stuck like a dart and we were like yeah it cost me $750 to pass that 750 dollars that's where you started looking at the other way like wait how much that cost after a couple of those you're just kind of like
Starting point is 00:37:13 i can't do that anymore i feel like it's always the people you least expect like a few years ago we had an event with uh smash mouth and you know i've i've heard i've heard a smash mouth up here and there and then it's 11 p.m. I'm about to go to sleep and there's a knock on the door. And it's the guys from Sublime. I'm sublime. The guys from Smash Mouth are like, hey, you guys want to party? I was like, oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:37:34 No, I don't think I can. All right, Rome, man. It was so much fun catching up with you. And we're excited. Starting point is 00:40:11 It's like a white guy in the snowman. You just can't take him out of it. I know. It's true. Tyler. It's been about five days and Jack Daniels still has not contacted me on the Apple Jacks combination. Oh yeah true. Still waiting on that. Go listen to the Big Bear podcast. Tyler has an awesome idea, patent pending.
Starting point is 00:40:31 Randy, do you have anything else to say? Back to the whole cabin thing. Hopefully we can make our way up there again. And then this week. I mean, we're going to be there March 14th, no matter what. We're going to be there. Yeah. So one to three at Big Bear Mountain Resort. Come hang out with us.
Starting point is 00:40:40 Of course. Come be on the podcast, baby. Hopefully we get a cabin so we can stay. That'd be cool. And this weekend, I might go head up a LA Wildcats game. So go Wildcats. Yeah. XFL.
Starting point is 00:40:48 Woo. Word. Randy's the first person I've seen with the LA Wildcats hat in person. Yeah. And the hat itself, I remember looking over at Brett when I first saw it, and I said, damn, I actually really like that hat. But now I can't buy it because Randy has it. Look, leave it up to Randy to ruin something.
Starting point is 00:41:04 All right. Bore it, anything? Poor Randy. He messed up my Chick-fil-A order this morning. He deserves it. How's the wildcats thing my fault? How is it not your fault? See, there you go.
Starting point is 00:41:16 Alright, Bort, anything before we go? I just hope that I'm all healed up and ready for the next round of Jack Daniels up at Big Bear Mound Resort. Hell yeah. We gotta buy one more snowskate, right? We can't just, man. Hell yeah. We got to buy one more snow skate, right? We can't just have one. I'll have one next time we go up. Oh, really?
Starting point is 00:41:29 You're going to get one? I'm just going to buy a canoe for sled. Because we talked about, I snowboard a lot when I was younger. So being up there the last couple times, man, I haven't been in a long time. But being back up on the resort and look up the hill, man,
Starting point is 00:41:39 I have the itch to snowboard some more. We got kicked off the hill. We got to make sure we get lift passes. I'm like, we're gassed, Dave. All those falls we took, the little half-ass little fall on my butt that I had with you right there, the one fall I had right there was the hardest fall, and it hurts my... And my neck still hurts. And I fell so many times way harder.
Starting point is 00:41:59 Snowskates rule, though. Screw Randy's sled. That thing sucked. I need to get a better sled. Yeah, I want a sled this time. Like a canoe. Oh, don't, dude. I went into a sled. Yeah, I want a sled this time. Like a canoe. Oh, dude. I went into a tree.
Starting point is 00:42:07 Oh, no. Let's get a canoe. Why don't we just get an inner tube? All right, Bort. No. We'll see you up at Big Bear Mountain Resort. All right. We'll catch you next time, right?
Starting point is 00:42:14 Peace. What's new? What's new with Menace? Outro Music
