Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, what's up everybody? It's Metis. Thank you for checking out What's New Pod. Now, I need to run a piece of test audio right now. So, I don't actually have a podcast for you to check out. So, the piece of audio that I'm gonna put in here is an interview that no one heard. It's a pre-interview.
Starting point is 00:00:15 So, sometimes we do these for the Woody Show so we can make some bullet points when we do the actual interview. So, this one was with Danielle, the sister of Travis, who was the husband of Joe Exotic you don't have to listen to it but I got to put it in this feed right now so I can test out a couple things so if you listen to it cool if you don't all good thank you for checking out the podcast hey Danielle how you doing I'm all right how are you doing well first off I just want to say sorry
Starting point is 00:00:41 for your loss with Travis I know yeah I hear that a lot yeah I you know I just want to say sorry for your loss with Travis. I know. Yeah, I hear that a lot. Yeah. I, you know, I just wanted to start off with that. It's been a crazy time. And for all this to be coming out now, where a lot of people are stuck at home to watch Tiger King, I know it must be crazy for you. Yeah, I've been almost avoiding social media because of it. I get about 10 friend requests a day from random people just because of the show. Yeah. Well, that's how I became aware of you because, you know, of course,
Starting point is 00:01:11 everybody's been going crazy with memes and you commented on one of them and you said, hey, I can't avoid Joe Exotic. No, it's pretty bad. You guys, even the Woody show had done a small thing a few months ago, too, when he was convicted. Yeah. So I just I want to get into it and talk about your brother a little bit, if that's OK. When he left Southern California, how did that happen? He had a friend. His mom knew about the opportunity and he just wanted to kind of get out of California,
Starting point is 00:01:44 get away from, you know, what he was getting into and wanted to work with the animals. He was supposed to be just a cameraman for Joe. So my dad was like, okay, you know, give him a thousand bucks, sit him on a greyhound and was like, you know, if you ever need anything, let us know type thing.
Starting point is 00:02:02 So he got there and would he check in regularly at all or oh yeah my dad paid for his cell phone he had a phone we texted him all the time you know and he was just chilling and then joe started preying on him yeah so how long after he got there did you start hearing about things or get notified that, hey, they're dating each other? Well, it was more of Joe likes having trophy husbands. And Joe likes younger boys, if you haven't noticed. He noticed my brother, I guess, started giving him things, offering him things, treating him better than everyone else, you know. And he didn't come right out and tell us about it, but he made it a point to tell us, you know,
Starting point is 00:02:52 you know, I'm not gay, but Joe told him, oh, well, I'm sick. I'm dying. You can have this and that when I die type thing. There was no indication before he moved to Oklahoma that he was into males. Oh, no. My brother's a man whore. He had all the girls flocking on him. I'm sure you've seen some of the memes. Yeah. So he had girlfriends previously to going out to Oklahoma or no? Oh, yeah. I noticed on your Facebook page, it looks like you have a photo that you're at the wedding between him and Joe's other husband. Before I ask you about that, did you do any visits to the park before the wedding? The wedding was my first time actually going out there. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:39 I had been out there a couple times afterwards as well. How was that first experience at the wedding and just seeing the zoo itself? The zoo, it was a, you know, white trash zoo. Yeah. Their house smelled like tiger piss. It wasn't the best of situations, but I was, my brother was getting taken care of. He was like, it's not a big deal. It's not a real wedding because I was originally supposed to give my brother away.
Starting point is 00:04:08 But my sister really wanted to. So I let her do it. And my brother was like, don't worry about it. It's not a real wedding. This isn't forever. Yeah. Is that what he was telling the family? First of all, I'm marrying a man.
Starting point is 00:04:21 And then second, I'm marrying two men at the same time. A lot of people kept trying to tell me, well, he had to have been gay because he married a man. That wasn't the situation. Joe was like bringing him in with drugs, with games, with his four wheeler. You know, he gave him things to make him stay. He groomed him. Like my brother was 19. I've known people that have had issues with drugs and who are straight.
Starting point is 00:04:50 But when they're in that headspace and they need drugs, they. They do what they got to do. They do what they got to do. Yeah, that's correct. Can you go through the wedding day for me? Joe wouldn't let Travis really have friends. He was very weird about us family even being there in the first place. He isolated Travis.
Starting point is 00:05:11 So it was kind of difficult on the wedding day. My brother didn't shower. He didn't comb his hair before the wedding. It wasn't a big deal to him as much as it was to Joe and joe wanted it to be all over the news because joe just always wanted to be famous yeah so you just get to the park day of the wedding and then it just happens quickly or is this like a all-day event and going all night it was pretty much an all-day event after afterwards we went to the safari bar which is a little um like restaurant thing that joe owned you know fed us expired foods from walmart
Starting point is 00:05:46 oh geez if if you saw that in the yeah so that actually like they fed you that food too oh yeah yeah it was terrible oh my god so your family wasn't freaking out at all though during this time they didn't tell my dad and my mom about it at that point in time. It was just me and my sister there. Okay. So your mom and dad didn't go to that wedding? No, my dad was actually a little upset because he didn't know about it. But my brother didn't want my dad to know he was marrying a man because he wasn't sure how my dad would feel about it. My dad was totally fine.
Starting point is 00:06:20 Like, as long as we're happy, you know, our parents are happy. How was the overall park experience of just walking around was it really run down or was it kept up i would i would say it was a bit run down i felt bad for a lot of the animals a couple of the enclosures were bigger for the animals the couple that were bigger are the only ones that they would actually show on the videos and stuff yeah but he had a lot of smaller enclosures with two tigers in it two lions or you know liger whatever the heck in there how many animals you think were there a few hundred he had he had a back area where he kept um other animals like there was a front area where the pup for public viewing and
Starting point is 00:07:04 if you paid extra you could go into the back area and see an additional like hundred animals okay now did you ever have any one-on-one with joe um joe's very fake i'm sure you've noticed yeah anytime i ever got one-on-one with him it was him talking crap you know carol baskin did you even know who that was when he would say that it was just on his mind constantly i wasn't sure when yeah it was on his mind constantly i wasn't really sure about her and then my brother kind of was went into a bit where he was like oh well carol killed her husband and joe's trying to expose her and that's all i really knew about it i wasn't't, you know.
Starting point is 00:07:47 He was kind of just obsessed with it 24-7? Oh, yeah. That and his tigers and always saying somebody is out to get him. So you went to the wedding. How many times after that did you go to the park? I had gone there two more times. One other time I was dating a guy and we just, you know, 20 hour drive from SoCal to Oklahoma just to go visit. I was out there because I wanted one
Starting point is 00:08:27 last time where like all five of us are together because my parents split when you know I was a kid and I was like let's just do this one last time and I'm really glad that I got everyone to agree to do it uh to backtrack just a little bit so you said you were out there for a week. Did you stay on the property for a week? Oh, yeah, we stayed in the house. Oh, wow. With him and Joe? Yeah. And all the baby tigers. They're annoying. Oh, really? Are they just up 24-7 or what? They're like infants, you know, they're a week old and they're just crying and crying and crying. And it's like a shrieking scream because they're
Starting point is 00:09:05 hungry all the time. Now, is your brother taking care of him or is Joe taking care of him? Joe. Joe. My brother had a back room with his video games. You know, as you saw, he smoked a lot of pot. That was his best friend. You know, he just smoked pot, played video games and ride his four wheeler. He wasn't really a part of the park. He was more of a trophy husband. So anytime Joe wanted to show him off, he got to show him off. And then Travis went back to, you know, playing his video games. I hope it's okay that I asked this, that you didn't see the footage of the incident beforehand. And I saw another article saying that the rest of your family did see the footage beforehand
Starting point is 00:09:44 of what happened to your brother. How did that happen? One of, uh, I believe one of the officers had, or somebody gave the footage, a family member. I I'm not a hundred percent, but we got a hold of the footage and the footage is a lot longer. Uh, there's more things that happen after the fact. And I just, I didn't want to watch it i wasn't ready i didn't feel comfortable with it you know what i mean it's that that was my little brother you know yeah um so when that happened when i was watching it because we all hunkered down and watched all seven episodes together me my sister my dad yeah and um when that happened i was like this isn't it is it and then it happened and i i broke down i couldn't breathe for a good half hour
Starting point is 00:10:32 yeah i can imagine so yeah yeah you weren't even ready for that no you just see the pop and then that that's that you know yeah geez i'm sorry so this happens and then another part of the documentary where it shows that uh joe's getting married again to some guy and then you're that was uh two months after the fact yeah and then so your mother was there how'd that happen um he manipulated my mother into going pretty much he was, I want you to be there because he was seeing Dylan before my brother died. Like Dylan was already in the picture, but he wasn't on camera or, you know, posted about. But the fact that he, you know, two months later, he manipulated my mom into going and then was like, oh, look, see, she's okay with it. So everyone can be OK with it. And then shut out.
Starting point is 00:11:25 My mom never talked to her again. You think the master plan was just to get your mom there so he wouldn't get any flack for marrying somebody? He would be OK. Yeah. That's pretty crazy. Joe ghosted my mom. My mom fought really hard to get a lot of my brother's things off the property. Joe wouldn't really let us have anything of my
Starting point is 00:11:45 brothers unless it dealt with stuff before he got to the zoo, like trophies from when he was in soccer in elementary school and stuff like that. What are your overall thoughts about Joe? He's a piece of shit. Yeah. He preys on young men, barely legal young men. He says that he's all about the cats, but he's all about the money. He was breeding and finding loopholes to sell these animals for thousands of dollars. And I knew it was wrong. One thing, when I was at their house, my brother said they had ice cream. I opened the freezer and there was a frozen baby tiger in a Ziploc baggie. He's not a good person. And he tries to act like he is.
Starting point is 00:12:33 And he didn't do anything wrong. But I think it goes a lot deeper than they think it goes. What do you think of all these Instagram posts or Twitter posts saying, free Joe? It makes me sick. I don't, I'm hoping people are just joking for the sake of the internet and that we're all in quarantine and losing our minds. I don't like when they say free Joe because joke or not, it's, he shouldn't be free. I hope he gets his ass kicked in there. Yeah. Well, I was going to bring up this. So now he's in prison. He is suing the government
Starting point is 00:13:12 and he's asking for a pardon from Donald Trump. Let's say Joe did get out for some crazy reason. What do you think he would do right after? I'm not 100%. I don't know where he'd be able to go. Do you think he would try to start a whole tiger thing up again? I don't think anybody would trust him enough to work with him. Like, who would want to give that man another animal? Do you think that he's loving all the attention that he's getting right now? Oh, yeah. He's feeding on it.
Starting point is 00:13:40 Yeah, because they showed this part where John Oliver was making fun of him, and he was eating it up well that's what was perceived on the documentary no he likes any sort of publicity if it's if eyes are on him he's good but like i didn't even know like in the documentary i don't remember his name but that guy i guess was a producer and when he told joe hey i own everything and he was like no you don't and then all of a sudden it burns up like what happens now this thing is huge and people are hitting you up like crazy are you just gonna just try to avoid it until it dies down or i'm trying to avoid it
Starting point is 00:14:16 till it dies down i've been seeing posts about people saying oh i'm gonna dress up as travis for halloween or they going to do a thing for Halloween. And it's like that. That's my favorite holiday. And now I'm not I don't even want to deal with Halloween. I've been thinking about shutting down my social media just for a little bit because I don't want to see some of the stuff I've been saying, you know. Yeah. As a as somebody that's still mourning, it's not something that's like, oh, cool, my brother on the Internet, you know, or even us. We've been on the Internet. They've I've seen articles where they're talking about me, my sister and my dad. It's just it's surreal, you know? Yeah. That's one of the reasons why I like my Instagram.
Starting point is 00:15:00 I don't I don't have my name on it. I don't have anything on it. I even just recently made it private because I felt like people were finding it. Yeah. But it's hard when you're in quarantine not doing anything. Yeah. Well, I just want to say thank you so much for talking to me about this. I know it must be super difficult. It's weird that I remember you because I saw you that day and you were picking up tickets. Yeah, I was picking up tickets.
Starting point is 00:15:27 Yeah. Yeah. It's such a trip. Then who knew all this would happen this short time later? Yeah. Last year was a better year. Yeah. Hopefully we can turn this around, you know?
Starting point is 00:15:38 Yeah. When more radio tickets, when things start opening again. I know. I know. True, true. We're going to wrap this up. Thank you again. Yeah, no problem.
Starting point is 00:15:47 If you have any questions, go ahead and shoot me a message. I'd rather get the real story out than people make rumors up about my brother. You know what I mean? Yeah, absolutely. I'll talk to you later. Have a good day. All right.
